Granby High School Announcements April 15-26, 2019 Granby High School Announcements April 15-26, 2019 Our mission is to "Raise the Bar" so that ALL students will be well prepared for college and the world of work. This will be accomplished through rigor, relevance and relationships between all Granby stakeholders. GRANBY HIGH’S SCHOOLWIDE INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS One hundred percent of students will show at least 10% growth in critical thinking skills as measured by results on performance based tasks, unit tests, SOL tests, industry certifications, AP tests, and IB tests. Our Instructional Focus Statement At Granby High School, we will improve students' critical thinking skills through use of Kagan and cooperative learning strategies with JIGSAW, FISHBONE, and RECIPROCAL TEACHING as high yield strategies. Looking at Student Work and Owning Our Data Students should see exemplary student work (for current units of study) as well as data posted in classes and on the halls throughout the building. Students should maintain unit test data forms in each class to track their progress and to set learning goals. Kagan and Cooperative Learning Strategies Implementation with Fidelity Students should participate in Kagan and/or cooperative learning strategies in each class on a daily basis. Students should complete JIGSAW, FISHBONE, and RECIPROCAL TEACHING strategies in each class for each unit of study! Reading and Writing to Improve Literacy Every student should engage in focused and/or sustained silent reading activities on a daily basis in every class. Every ninth and tenth grader should be using a writing structure to develop persuasive writing responses in English and Health classes at least 4 times each quarter. Goal for Improving Attendance Chronic student absenteeism will be reduced by at least 10% (from 20% to 10%) in order to meet school accreditation in the area of attendance. Theory of Action Norfolk Public Schools students will develop their individual potential, maximize skills for lifelong learning, and successfully contribute to a global society. All personnel will intentionally facilitate an environment that supports exemplary and innovative teaching and learning opportunities in every school, in every classroom, every day, for every student – no exception. Leadership Leadership facilitates and maximizes the efforts of all personnel to effectively promote and support teaching and learning. Literacy Literacy is reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking critically. Rigor Rigorous teaching and learning opportunities are academically, intellectually, and personally challenging. Innovation Innovation promotes the implementation of emerging and transformational ideas and actions to support teaching and learning. Industry Certification Remediation Sessions Industry Certification remediation for the W!SE Financial and Work Place Readiness tests are after school as follows: Monday, April 22: Room 28 Wednesday, April 24: Room 15V Monday, April 29: Room 1CL CTE Industry Certification testing will be April 29 - May 10. Passing an Industry Certification is a graduation requirement. If you have any questions, please see your CTE teacher or Dr. Marshall. Seniors, who have been accepted into at least one college, and have filed a FAFSA have an opportunity to attend this event to celebrate your commitment to higher education. Please see Mrs. Ulanich in the ACCESS Office for a permission slip (space is limited)! From the Counseling Department Transcript Requests Students, if you are applying to colleges using anything other than the Common Application, please make sure to request a transcript by doing one of the following: 1. Visit the School Counseling Office (Academy A or B) and request a transcript in person. 2. Access the Guidance page on the Granby website and follow the instructions on the page to request a transcript. 3. Email your school counselor to request a transcript. Be sure to include specific school or email information needed to make sure the transcript is sent where you intend it to be sent. SCHOLARSHIP NEWS FOR THE CLASS OF 2019 If you know seniors who aren’t on the wall of stars, if they turn in their financial aid award letter, scholarship letter, college acceptance letter to their counselor or Ms. U, we will add them to the window! A senior does not need to commit to a particular school in order for the scholarship money to be used in our final count. Please also encourage seniors to complete the FAFSA so they won't miss out on any opportunities for free money. Congratulations to the Chemistry Olympiad Competitors On March 14th, 2019 Granby High School hosted 55 students from 12 different high school from the Hampton Roads area for the local exam of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO). Granby seniors Edward Noe and Shoaib Rana (see picture) are among 10 of the best students that qualified for the next round of competition. They will participate for the whole day in the theoretical and practical exam on April 26th at Norfolk State University. Archery Club Dues of $5.00 needs to be remitted to Club Officers Marlin Adams, Noah Weaver, or Ms. Baylor prior to participating in Archery starting after spring break in the small gym. YEARBOOK SALES - Yearbooks are on sale online at Walsworth.com , in the main office or the students may stop by 19B to purchase them. The cost is $50. They will be on sale until sold out. Yearbooks have sold out for the past two years. Reserve yours today. Students should attend all classes every day. Any student who obtains 14 or more absences, whether excused or unexcused, will not be given credit, regardless of their grade. Seniors, save the date! Prom will be held May 31 at the Half Moone Center. Seniors, thanks to all who have paid their dues. Dues are still $50 and will increase to $75 after February 28, so if you haven't already, pay your dues. Juniors: The ring dance will take place on May 4th at the Mambo Room from 7-10 pm. Tickets are $25 for those who have paid dues, $65 for those who have not paid dues. Guests are $30 and must complete an application from 17A. Prices will go up after April 12th. Girls Volleyball conditioning will run Tuesdays and Thursdays 230-430pm in Small Gym. Concussion and Physical forms are required. See Coach Villanueva in 21A for additional info.     News Release CONTACT: Carley Brierre (757) 793-0337 [email protected] June 17, 2021 Elizabeth River Crossings Awards Scholarships to Eight High School Graduates Portsmouth, Va. – Elizabeth River Crossings has awarded eight local high school graduates with its annual Good Citizen Scholarship, which commends students who consistently reflect excellence in character, demonstrate leadership, and make positive contributions to both their school and community. Each year, one high school student from each of the eight public high schools in Portsmouth and Norfolk receives a $6,000 scholarship, dispersed in $1,500 increments across four years, for any college, trade school or post-secondary institution, so long as the student can provide proof of enrollment each year. This year’s recipients participated and/or held leadership positions in activities and programs such as Chorus, Environmental Clubs, Girl Scouts, JROTC, Key Club, Model UN, National Honor Society, Pink Club, STEM Programs, Student Council, Theater, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Varsity Sports. These students are also dedicated volunteers at local churches, schools, and more. “This year’s graduating class was faced with unfortunate challenges during their junior and senior years. Yet, they remained steadfast in their academics and motivated in their extracurriculars and philanthropic endeavors. These ambitious students have already made such positive impacts on their communities, and as a company we truly value those efforts.
