Lakoff (1975) “It is a widely held belief that women have larger colour vocabularies than do men. For example, Robin Lakoff (1975) states this as a fact and suggests as an explanation the observation that in this society women spend much more of their time on colour-related activities such as choosing clothes than men do” The Deficit Model – Why might we be sceptical about Lakoff’s concept? Social status Do we think that speech is more important to women than men – speech can be taken as an indicator of social class, so women make more effort to conform to standard usage in an effort to demonstrate their respectability. Society’s expectations of women Society expects ‘better’ behaviour from women than men. ,This begins in childhood when boys’ misbehaviour is tolerated more than girls’ Lakoff states that ‘If a little girl ‘talks rough’ like a boy, she will be ostracised, scolded or made fun of’. Society also expects women to play the dominant role in child rearing, and this includes providing children with models of ‘correct’ speech for them to imitate. In which Disney films do women speak as much as, or more than the men? What are the ratios/percentages? 2. A complaint is incomplete without three main elements: a speaker, a listener, and a signaling system or language. Language plays a crucial part in our lives to inform people around us of what we feel, what we desire and question or understand the world around us. The fundamental function of language is communication. Songs are one of the greatest creations of human kind in the course of history. It is creativity in a pure and undiluted form and format. The speech act is an utterance considered as an action, particularly with regards to its intention, purpose or effect. Jane Austin claims that many utterances are equivalent to actions which means without performing an action by mere words action can be performed. Songs reflect the society, what’s present in the society creates an impact on the songs written by various songwriters and hence songs are incomplete without complaints, be it any romantic song, sad song or an inspiring one. Complaints can be found in every song about the lover, the world or the people. It is ever-present in conversation, humor, and conflict, and it is called upon to explain everything from driving styles to food preferences. Gender is embedded so thoroughly in our institutions, our actions, our beliefs, and our desires, that it appears to us to be completely natural. The world swarms with ideas about gender – and these ideas are so commonplace that we take it for granted that they are true, accepting common adage as scientific fact. As scholars and researchers, though, it is our job to look beyond what appears to be common sense to find not simply what truth might be behind it, but how it came to be common sense. It is precisely because gender seems natural, and beliefs about gender seem to be obvious truths, that we need to step back and examine gender from a new perspective. Doing this requires that we suspend what we are used to and what feels comfortable, and question some of our most fundamental beliefs. This is not easy, for gender is so central to our understanding of ourselves and of the world that it is difficult to pull back and examine it from new perspectives.1 But it is precisely the fact that gender seems self-evident that makes the study of gender interesting. It brings the challenge to uncover the process of construction that creates what we have so long thought of as natural and inexorable – to study gender not as given, but as an accomplishment; not simply as cause, but as effect; and not just as individual, but as social.

    Caitlin R. Donnelly. “That’s Just Like a Boy”: A Content Analysis of Masculinities in Hardy Boys Mystery Stories, 1927-1932. A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. April 2008. 77 pages. Advisor: Brian Sturm This study is a content analysis of six Hardy Boys mystery stories from the 1920s and 1930s in order to explore what characteristics and expressions of masculinity are communicated as appropriate, desirable, and admirable. The study concludes that in the books surveyed, women are few in number and male characters are largely at liberty to decide their actions without interference or limitation; that Frank and Joe Hardy reflect all of the hallmarks of “real boys” as defined in the early twentieth century; and that the stories endorse an older model of Victorian masculinity that was falling out of favor while rejecting the newer standards that were replacing them.
