By Terry Maker Missing - Believed Killed Terry Maker is a retired computer engineer, who has taken to amateur genealogy, after retirement due to ill health in 2003. He is the husband of Patricia Maker, nee Gash, and brother in law of Teddy Gash, (the cousins of Fl/Sgt L.J. Smith). He served as a Civilian Instructor in the Air Training Corps, at Stanford le Hope from 1988 until 1993.The couple live in Essex, and have done so for 36 years; they have no children, and have two golden retrievers. Starr Memorial by E.(Bud) Koorndyk The essence of this report will be of a nature of sharing with you, the supporters of our trust, the enthusiasm shown by our wonderful friends in Norwich who so carefully nurture the fond memories of our associations with them during the trying days of World War II and have carried that through in helping us to maintain our wonderful Memorial Library and the trust that administers it. As I reported at our convention in Nor- wich last summer, the University of East Anglia had anticipated spending a day at our Memorial Library and at a City Hall reception, with over 100 American students attending the University. Aerial Gunner Training As captivating as are the combat stories of America’s World War II aerial gunners, so too is the wartime history of the training program that produced them. Some of the earliest training methods devised in 1941 were crude and laughable, and hardly effectual. Perry Kerr, 1945 For more information, see Page 4. Aviator Perry Kerr scrunched into his nose gunner’s compartment on Earthquake McGoon, the B-24 heavy bomber flown by the Richard Koch crew. Or maybe it was The Joker, one of the other ships that Perry and the others had flown on combat missions from Attlebridge, England, to Germany starting on March 30, 1945. McGoon was the “world's dirtiest rassler,” a creation of cartoonist Al Capp. The Joker was a villain in the Dick Tracy comic strip. Whichever aircraft the Koch crew flew on April 21, 1945, it was part of the 466th Bomb Group sent to destroy a railway bridge near Salzburg, Austria. But they had to abandon the mission because of thunderstorms. The formation was returning to home base near Norwich. Perry had a front-row seat in the compartment below the B-24’s cockpit. As the togglier, tasked with releasing bombs, he had to have a view of the aircraft ahead to know when to drop the bombs. On this return flight, Perry watched in horror as an anti-aircraft shell struck the left wing of the B-24 just ahead of him. It was the Black Cat, decorated with a menacing panther painted on its fuselage. The aircraft fell to the earth, killing 10 crew members. Two others survived and were taken to a German POW camp, only to be released a few weeks later. -

Haulman AIR FORCE HISTORY AND MUSEUMS PROGRAM 1999 Hitting Home The Air Offensive Against Japan The strategic bombardment of Japan during World War II remains one of the most controversial subjects of military history because it involved the first and only use of atomic weapons in war. It also raised the question of whether strategic bombing alone can win wars, a question that dominated U.S. Air Force thinking for a generation. Without question, the strategic bombing of Japan contributed very heavily to the Japanese decision to surrender. The United States and her allies did not have to invade the home islands, an invasion that would have cost many thousands of lives on both sides. This pamphlet traces the development of the bombing of the Japan- ese home islands, from the modest but dramatic Doolittle raid on Tokyo in April 1942, through the effort to bomb from bases in China that were supplied by airlift over the Himalayas, to the huge 500-plane raids from the Marianas in the Pacific. The campaign changed from precision daylight bombing to night incendiary bombing of Japanese cities and ultimately to the use of atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The story covers the debut of the spectacular B–29 air- craft—in many ways the most awesome weapon of World War II— and its use not only as a bomber but also as a mine-layer. Hitting Home is the sequel to High Road to Tokyo Bay, a pamphlet by the same author that concentrated on Army Air Forces’ tactical op- erations in Asia and the Pacific areas during World War II. -

M44 & 10 x 500 M17 bombs Bombing Altitudes: 25,700, 25,600 & 27,100 ft Ammo Fired: 13,100 rounds wenty-eight 303rd BG(H) aircraft plus two borrowed PFF aircraft took off to attack the Krupp Grusonwerke A.G. at Magdeburg, Germany. The secondary target, to be Tbombed if PFF means were used, was the Magdeburg railroad marshalling yards. Last resort targets were airdromes at Gardelegen, Quedlinberg and Giessen. The aircraft took off between 0735 and 0759 hours and returned to Molesworth between 1527 and 1608 hours—a seven-hour fifty-minute mission. One aircraft returned early: #43-38248 Jigger Rooche II, 427BS (Lt. Drewry), when his No. 2 turbo went out during assembly. Sixteen aircraft dropped 50 1,000-lb. M44 G.P. bombs and 60 500-lb. M17 incendiary clusters on the secondary target from 25,700, 25,600 and 27,100 ft., using PFF equipment. Aircraft #42-97187 Miss Umbriago, 360BS, piloted by 2Lt. W.F. Miller, 359BS, was carrying "Nickels" (leaflets). It was lost before reaching the IP. -

He worked for the Monsanto Corporation from 1963 until he retired in 1985 as a Laboratory Manager in Sauge! IL. Mr. Homer served as a Central Fire Control Operator on one of the first operational B-29 crews and participated in approximately 18 missions and 9 hump missions in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and numerous other awards while serving his country. John L- Garner - Interviewer John L. Gamer is a graduate student at the University of Illinois - Springfield. He is majoring in history. John Gamer received his undergraduate degree in education from Eastem Illinois University. He works fi.rll time as an Illinois State Police, Master Sergeant, supervising a Special Victim's Unit. Henry "Hap" Homer Oral History Transcript B-29 Method The interview was conducted in the lower level at Mr. Henry "Hap" Homer's condominium in Collinsville, Illinois on October 7,2006. Mr. Homer's humility made him a reluctant narrator but his family coaxed him into participating. The purpose ofthe interview was to capture Mr. Horner's unique experiences as a member of the crew of one of the first operational B-29 long-range bombers.
