Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period. -

Saracens and Christian Heroism in Sirbeves of Hamtoun
The Anxieties of Encounter and Exchange: Saracens and Christian Heroism in SirBeves of Hamtoun Siobhain Bly Calkin As Edward Said, Norman Daniel, and Dorothee Metlitzki have pointed out, the purportedly Muslim figures who appear in medieval western literature usually bear little or no resemblance to historical Muslims of the period. Said states, "we need not look for correspondence between the language used to depict the Orient and the Orient itself, not so much because the language is inaccurate but because it is not even trying to be accurate" (71). Similarly, Daniel and Metlitzki identify repeated stereotypical misrepresentations of Islam in medieval literary texts, such as the de- piction of Islam as a polytheistic religion or the depiction of alcohol-drinking Mus- lims (Daniel 3-4, 49-51, 72-73, 81, 133-54; Metlitzki 209-10). It is certainly true that there is little or no mimetic relationship between literary Saracens and historical Muslims, but it should be noted that literary Saracens, despite their inaccuracies, did connote for the West an extremely powerful, technologically advanced Muslim civi- lization, which both impressed medieval Christians with its scientific knowledge and immense wealth, and menaced them militarily with its many victories over crusad- ers and its capacity for territorial expansion.1 Thus, while the Saracens of western literature may not offer us a historically accurate vision of medieval Islam, they can occasionally offer us some insight into the anxieties historical Islam posed for the West. This essay examines moments in the fourteenth-century Middle English ro- mance SirBeves of Hamtoun when the text's depiction of one knight's assimilation into a Saracen world communicates historical anxieties about how life in a Saracen Florilegium 21 (2004) Sir Beves of Hamtoun enclave might compromise the Christian heroism of an English knight. -

Nathaniel Ogden Kidd, B.A., M.Div Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation traces the consolidation of a classical Christian framework for demonology in the theological corpus of John of Damascus (c. 675 – c. 750), an eighth century Greek theologian writing in Jerusalem. When the Damascene sat down to write, I argue, there was a great variety of demonological options available to him, both in the depth of the Christian tradition, and in the ambient local imagination. John’s genius lies first in what he chose not to include, but second in his ability to synthesize a minimalistic demonology out of a complex body of material and integrate it into a broader theological system. -

A blood red cross on a white background is instantly recognisable, easily produced and clear enough to be spotted a mile away. It Ais a flag that england has made its own. These days, you can see St George’s flag almost anywhere – in england at any rate. When england is playing in an international football competition, they are everywhere. They flutter from cars, being carried on plastic struts that attach to the car windows. Larger versions are nailed to wooden poles lashed to builders’ vans and trucks. Houses have flags flying from windows, garages and garden fences. Shops are festooned with them and pubs are swathed in St George’s flags, St George’s buntings and St George’s posters. The imagination of modern marketing men has been let loose on the once simple flag of St George. Breweries put their logos into the white quarters of the flag to link their product to the ubiquitous flags. Other flags are decorated with a silhouette of a mounted knight in armour piercing a fierce dragon with a lance. Some combine the coat of arms of england with the flag of St George by displaying three lions on the flag. Advertisements show jocular knights in armour and a surcoat displaying the flag enjoying a wide variety of products seeking to gain sales by being linked to the patron saint of england. -

GRANHOLM GENEALOGY BYZANTINE ROYAL ANCESTRY Emperors, 578-1453 1 INTRODUCTION During the first half of the first century Byzantium and specifically Constantinople was the most influentional and riches capital in the world. Great buildings, such as Hagia Sophia were built during these times. Despite the distances, contacts with the Scandinavians took place, in some cases cooperation against common enemies. Vikings traded with them and served in the Emperors’ Court. Sweden’s King Karl XII took refuge there for four years after the defeat in the war against Peter the Great of Russia in Poltava. Our 6th great grandfather, “ Cornelius von Loos” was with him and made drawings of many of the famous buildings in that region. The Byzantine lineages to us are shown starting fr o m different ancestors. There are many royals to whom we have a direct ancestral relationship and others who are distant cousins. These give an interesting picture of the history from those times. Wars took place among others with the Persians, which are also described in the book about our Persian Royal Ancestry. Additional text for many persons is highlighted in the following lists. This story begins with Emperor Tiberius II, (47th great grandfather) born in 520 and ends with the death of Emperor Constantine XI (15th cousin, 17 times removed) in battle in 1453. His death marked the final end of the Roman Empire, which had continued in the East for just under one thousand years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. No relations to us, the initial Emperor of the Byzantine was Justin I , born a peasant and a swineherd by initial occupation, reigned 518 to 527. -

GEPHYRA 7 2010 47–72 Terrence Michael Patrick DUGGAN* The Lycian port of Patara and its environs during the 13th and 14th centuries – An interpretation – Abstract: The Rum Seljuk surface remains at Patara, in the bathhouse and on the upper section of the adjacent wall around Yarımada attest to their presence at Patara, together with their probable reuse of the Roman Pharos, certainly still standing to a considerable height at this time and providing a marker for mariners along this coast until after 1524 as Piri Reis’s maps of this coastline clearly record; although the port no longer functioned to any significant extent after the Lusignan Crusader sack of Patara in May 1362 and so it is not noted or marked as such by Piri Reis. The 1211 Rum Seljuk-East Roman border agreement, the 1216 letter to King Hugh of Cyprus addressing the problem of piracy and the use of Seljuk naval forces from Lycian ports, including vessels probably based at Patara for the 1216 re-conquest of Antalya, together with the 1220 Rum Seljuk-Venetian trade treaty indicate firm Rum Seljuk state con- trol over Lycia and its Turkmen and Rum populations, as over the ports of Lycia, including the port of Patara, was established within the first 2 decades of the 13th c. Rum Seljuk control which continued into the 7th decade and arguably, with the rise of the Seljuk sponsored Menteşe Beylik into the first decade of the 14th c. The use and significance of the port in the period from the 13th c. to the sack of 1362 is noted, including serving as a Seljuk naval base in the control of piracy, for local cabotage trade and for Latin and Rum pilgrimage to the birth- place of St. -
