Two trichodinid species were identified from freshwater fishes, Mystus bleekeri and Glossogobius giuris , in the Shitalakshya River of Gazipur district, Bangladesh. Trichodina acuta Lom, 1961 is found for the first time in Bangladesh. Trichodina shitalakshyae sp. n. is characterized by having an undivided clear central area in the adhesive disc with a rounded or slightly undulated perimeter containing a few dark granules which form patches; elongated and rectangular blade with large interblade space and blunt tangent point; indistinct anterior blade apophysis and a shallow apex at the base of blade that never extends beyond the Y+1 axis; moderately wide and triangular central part with blunt point; and space between tip of ray and central clear area forms a wide impregnated ring. Based on these characters and the unique shape and absence of variability of the denticles among the silver impregnated specimens of the present species, it resembles Trichodina porocephalusi Asmat, 2001. According to the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Rules 1997 (GOB, 1997), construction of a power plant project falls under the RED category. Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) followed by Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) including Environmental Management Plan are required for these types of projects for getting environmental clearance from the Department of Environment (DOE). According to the World Bank (1999) operational policy OP 4.01, this project is classified as an Environmental Category A project, requiring an Environmental Assessment for the construction and operation of the project with recommendations for appropriate mitigation and management measures. Since a detailed environmental assessment of the proposed project is being carried out, the DOE has exempted the IEE of the project in response to the request by the Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh Limited (EGCB). -

Different water quality parameters and fish catchment data 2Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, were taken from each site on monthly basis. Fish were identified in family basis Marine Fisheries & Technology Station, through surveying in fish landing centre, fish markets and fisher’s community Cox’s Bazar, BANGLADESH and samples were brought to laboratory for accurate taxonomic identification. Temperature, turbidity and pH were found to be different depending on season; while, dissolved O2 and NH3 were moderately uniform in all season. Almost twenty taxonomic families have been identified. Among them, the Cyprinidade Keywords family was the most abundant familiy (34%), following Bagridae (8%), Siluridae Seasonality (6%); while, the Mugilidae (1%) was the least abundant one. The highest and Fin Fish lowest value in the majority of diversity indices were observed in monsoon and Diversity indices winter, respectively. The Pearson correlation test was conducted to evaluate Water quality parameters the regression coefficient between different water quality parameters and Hakaluki Haor diversity indices. -

Michael1,8 Many of the world’s megacities depend on groundwater from geologically complex aquifers that are over-exploited and threatened by contamination. Here, using the example of Dhaka, Bangladesh, we illustrate how interactions between aquifer heterogeneity and groundwater exploitation jeopardize groundwater resources regionally. Groundwater pumping in Dhaka has caused large-scale drawdown that extends into outlying areas where arsenic- contaminated shallow groundwater is pervasive and has potential to migrate downward. We evaluate the vulnerability of deep, low-arsenic groundwater with groundwater models that incorporate geostatistical simulations of aquifer heterogeneity. Simulations show that preferential flow through stratigraphy typical of fluvio-deltaic aquifers could contaminate deep (4150 m) groundwater within a decade, nearly a century faster than predicted through homogeneous models calibrated to the same data. -

Personal interview with the fishermen was carried out for a period of twelve weeks from 1 February to 30 April, 2009. A total of 20 species of fishes belonging to 18 genera, under 10 families were identified in the catches of different nets. The highest numbers (10) of species were recorded in the catches of seine net and the lowest numbers (3) of species were recorded in case of moiya net. A total of 6 fishing gear types such as seine net (moshari ber jal), lift net (khora jal), lift net (veshal jal), setbag net (dur jal), gill net (current jal) and moiya net (moiya jal) were recorded from the study area. Fishing gears, like seine nets (moshari berjal) and gill net (current jal) were identified as destructive to local fish population. Quality and delivered cost remain critical components of competitive advantage and Bangladesh has been able to produce to international standards and deliver at international prices. However, so have most of its competitors. As a result, buyers now focus on reliability of supply and order cycle times. Bangladesh’s competitors have used these as a means to gain competitive advantage. Lead times have always been critical for high-value goods and perishables, but have now become important for medium and low value goods where large- scale wholesalers and retailers seek to minimize inventories and reduce the risk of overstocking, while ensuring product availability. This is an area in which Bangladesh can make significant progress by reducing lead time for producers importing raw materials (the inbound supply chain) and shipping products (the outbound supply chain) as well as by increasing reliability in meeting fixed delivery times. The upcoming termination of the MFA has served to focus attention on logistics as the garment industry has become increasingly time sensitive. The traditional 6-9 month order cycle has decreased to 3-6 months. For repeat orders, the order cycle is down to 2-2½ months. At the same time, order sizes are shrinking from millions to 100 thousands for low value garments and 10 thousands for medium value garments. -

Bakali Department of Environmental Science and Resource Management Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Santosh, Tangail-1902 *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The study deals with the assessment of water quality parameters including pH, DO, BOD, temperature, TDS, EC, transparency, hardness, and alkalinity of the Turag River in Tongi, Gazipur, Bangladesh. The physicochemical parameters of water were investigated for 3 points in the Turag River through experimental methods. The river water was black in color and the odor was bad which indicate that the water is polluted and dangerous for aquatic ecosystem and human health. The temperature of water was within an average value of 28.39oC which indicates standard temperature (20 to 30oC) for aquatic medium. The average value of pH was 6.83, which indicates that the value was within the standard limits (6.5 to 8.0) for aquatic organisms. The values of DO water were within the range of 0.6 to 3.9 ppm with an average value of 2.25 ppm indicating low DO value from standard level (4.0 to 6.0 ppm for domestic and 5.0 ppm for fish culture). The values of BOD were within the average value of 1.15 ppm indicating lower condition compared to standard value of BOD (6.0 ppm for fish culture and 10.0 ppm for irrigation).
