According to the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Rules 1997 (GOB, 1997), construction of a power plant project falls under the RED category. Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) followed by Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) including Environmental Management Plan are required for these types of projects for getting environmental clearance from the Department of Environment (DOE). According to the World Bank (1999) operational policy OP 4.01, this project is classified as an Environmental Category A project, requiring an Environmental Assessment for the construction and operation of the project with recommendations for appropriate mitigation and management measures. Since a detailed environmental assessment of the proposed project is being carried out, the DOE has exempted the IEE of the project in response to the request by the Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh Limited (EGCB). -

The pollution of this river resulting from discharge of industrial waste effluent, domestic wastewater and agrochemicals into this river has reached alarming levels. The industries release many types of pollutants including many toxic heavy metals. The industrial units include dyeing/printing factories, edible oil factories, paper and pulp mills, chemical industries, jute mills, textile mills, soap factories, power plants, etc. Many of the industrial units drain out effluents directly into the river Shitalakkhya. -

The name of the rivers is Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, Shitalakshya and Meghna. The Electrical Conductivity (EC), pH, Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), and Salinity of the four river waters were evaluated. The EC values of the water of the Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, Shitalakshya and Meghna rivers were found to be 366.0, 299.2, 290.4 and 130.8 µS/cm respectively. Similarly, the pH values of 7.67, 7.38, 7.30 and 7.18 were found for the river waters of the Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, Shitalakshya and Meghna respectively. The EC and pH values were found higher for the Buriganga river water than that of the other three river waters. The TDS and salinity of the Buriganga river water were found 180 mg/l and 0.72% respectively. On the other hand, the TDS and salinity of the Meghna river water was found lower compared to the other three rivers. From this research, this is clear that the quality of the Meghna river water is much better than the river waters of the Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, and Shitalakshya. -

Dover Sherborn Dhaka Paper March 1st, 2019 By: Val Goorha, Sophia Katz, Ada Macleod, Kate Mastrobuono, Amelia Poor, Lella Wirth, and Stephanie Yu Introduction: Bangladesh is a very poor country with a considerable number of people living a migratory lifestyle, and moving from rural to urban areas in order to survive. It is apparent that there are many problems, and possible solutions, regarding migration within this country. However, the Bangladeshi government does not keep detailed records of movement within the country, resulting in misinformation. Migrant difficulties are therefore unknown or overlooked by the government and foreigners as there is limited information surrounding their lives and struggles. The lack of information leads to a scarcity of solutions and help for these desperate people. More statistics and research are needed regarding the amount of people in the capital city, Dhaka, for conditions to improve. Documentation for these migrant citizens is essential as well, in order to property provide assistance and initiate reforms. Increased government attention and intervention in migrant issues would greatly improve not only migrant’s lives, but also the city of Dhaka as a whole. Detailed information on population numbers, employment rates, living conditions, and other issues in Dhaka, would help identify ways to improve conditions for these people. Migrants live in extreme poverty in a place called “the slums”, an area outside of Dhaka that is extremely crowded and dirty. The houses in the slums are decomposing and often too small for those living there. Often 4-6 people are forced to live together in one room houses, practically living on top of each other (Khan). -

The project site is a highly congested industrial area situated beside the Shitalakhaya River. Moreover there exists a number of other Power Generation Complexes in the vicinity of the project site. The proposed project is therefore likely to have significant impacts on the surrounding environment, which has already undergone significant degradation due to the ongoing industrial and other anthropogenic activities. According to the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Rules 1997 (GOB, 1997), a power plant project falls under the "red category", for which carrying out an environmental assessment (EA) is mandatory for getting environmental clearance from the Department of Environment (DOE). According to the World Bank (1 99913) operational policy OP 4.01, this project is classified as an environmental category B project, on account of its location in an industrial area with numerous sources of pollution. -

Sayed1, Shampa Ar. Farzana Nazrul2 Bangladesh University Abstract Narayanganj was a very important port from ancient times in the history of Bangladesh. Over the course of time, it is losing its originality because of technical advancement of contemporary life style. From the wounds of unplanned rapid urbanization, this largest river port of the country is now facing a great challenge to maintain its functionality due to lack of public awareness. An investigative social survey and historical literature evidence were adopted as method. Tentative recommendations based on social view analysis, might demonstrate the possible links for further maintainable remodeling by the custody of multipurpose communication hub. Such analysis will also reveal the various potentials introducing cutting age transportation techniques for implementing and securing Bangladesh‟s developing quest to achieve one of the top 20 economies status in 2041. By potential rehabilitation of neglected suburban areas, this port city can also be an income generating hub by adjusting bus, train and ships along with the historic site. Abstract: In the recent years, research and development on liveable cities has gained attention because of the complexity and diversity of liveability standards. Cities all over the world are growing day by day. Developed countries are trying hard to reach to a level where the liveable conditions can be achieved and they are managing this ongoing challenged with a certain standard. Liveable condition means ensuring every aspect of living elements. Fast growing countries like Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Pakistan etc are developing but unfortunately they can not be considered as the desired liveable condition till now. In this paper, the author will focus on the liveable conditions of one fast growing city of developing countries, which is the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka. It is one of the city which is dealing with many challenges are far away from reaching to a level where people can live in a liveable situation. It will be done by analysing current challenges and opportunities. On the other hand, the author will also discuss about the management and co-ordination challenges between multilevel planning authorities. Because relation between different authorities is necessary to reach the desire liveable condition of a city.
