Kibria; E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Two trichodinid species were identified from freshwater fishes, Mystus bleekeri and Glossogobius giuris , in the Shitalakshya River of Gazipur district, Bangladesh. Trichodina acuta Lom, 1961 is found for the first time in Bangladesh. Trichodina shitalakshyae sp. n. is characterized by having an undivided clear central area in the adhesive disc with a rounded or slightly undulated perimeter containing a few dark granules which form patches; elongated and rectangular blade with large interblade space and blunt tangent point; indistinct anterior blade apophysis and a shallow apex at the base of blade that never extends beyond the Y+1 axis; moderately wide and triangular central part with blunt point; and space between tip of ray and central clear area forms a wide impregnated ring. Based on these characters and the unique shape and absence of variability of the denticles among the silver impregnated specimens of the present species, it resembles Trichodina porocephalusi Asmat, 2001. March 2003 Editorial This issue sees the inclusion of recently approved research awards from the Community Based Fisheries Management Project funded by DFID (UK) and the Development of Sustainable Aquaculture Project supported by USAID, both managed through the World Fish Center (formerly ICLARM). Their addition illustrates the widening scope of this newsletter and increasing cooperation of fisheries research activities within Bangladesh. Despite being a Bangladesh based initiative, contributions from individuals and institutions anywhere who are engaged in fish related activities are always welcome. The development of a coherent approach to research in Bangladesh was strengthened by the inaugural session of the Fisheries Research Forum of Bangladesh on 12 Nov 2002 in Dhaka. Over 60 representatives from all parts of the fisheries sector attended and formalisation of such a body was overwhelmingly endorsed. Minutes of this meeting are available from the Editor. An executive committee met on 30 January 2003 and formalised a constitution and operating mechanism. The next full meeting of the Forum is scheduled for 27 April 2003, when the focus will be on coastal issues. The Support for University Fisheries Education and Research (SUFER) project has realigned its approach to funding research. In the past individuals from participating universities and their partners from other institutes and NGOs approached the Project with ideas for funding. This did not generally provide a coherent strategy to meet research needs particularly towards the poverty focused objectives of the Project. SUFER through direct involvement of the sector, ranging from landless wild fry collectors to large scale private hatchery owners and the donor community, identified three key areas in which the project could significantly contribute to poverty focused research and support initiatives to influence policy change within the sector. -

The pollution of this river resulting from discharge of industrial waste effluent, domestic wastewater and agrochemicals into this river has reached alarming levels. The industries release many types of pollutants including many toxic heavy metals. The industrial units include dyeing/printing factories, edible oil factories, paper and pulp mills, chemical industries, jute mills, textile mills, soap factories, power plants, etc. Many of the industrial units drain out effluents directly into the river Shitalakkhya. -

Michael1,8 Many of the world’s megacities depend on groundwater from geologically complex aquifers that are over-exploited and threatened by contamination. Here, using the example of Dhaka, Bangladesh, we illustrate how interactions between aquifer heterogeneity and groundwater exploitation jeopardize groundwater resources regionally. Groundwater pumping in Dhaka has caused large-scale drawdown that extends into outlying areas where arsenic- contaminated shallow groundwater is pervasive and has potential to migrate downward. We evaluate the vulnerability of deep, low-arsenic groundwater with groundwater models that incorporate geostatistical simulations of aquifer heterogeneity. Simulations show that preferential flow through stratigraphy typical of fluvio-deltaic aquifers could contaminate deep (4150 m) groundwater within a decade, nearly a century faster than predicted through homogeneous models calibrated to the same data. -

Farid2 Department of Fisheries Management, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202 1Department of Zoology, Katiadi College, Katiadi, Kishorganj, 2 Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Dhaka, Bangladesh Abstract: The present investigation was conducted on the fish species composition and gear used in pre-monsoon period in the Shitalakshya river at Siddirgonj area, Narayangonj District. Personal interview with the fishermen was carried out for a period of twelve weeks from 1 February to 30 April, 2009. A total of 20 species of fishes belonging to 18 genera, under 10 families were identified in the catches of different nets. The highest numbers (10) of species were recorded in the catches of seine net and the lowest numbers (3) of species were recorded in case of moiya net. A total of 6 fishing gear types such as seine net (moshari ber jal), lift net (khora jal), lift net (veshal jal), setbag net (dur jal), gill net (current jal) and moiya net (moiya jal) were recorded from the study area. Fishing gears, like seine nets (moshari berjal) and gill net (current jal) were identified as destructive to local fish population.
