Kluczek (Katowice) https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0852-0572 Barbarians on the Coins of Trajan Decius (249–251) he theme of the barbarian, especially its variants which presented the bar- T barian as an enemy or a captive, was an ideologically expressive symbol uti- lised in Roman art and mintage across centuries1. It symbolised victory and the capability of conquering a specific person or an entire empire; it expressed the idea of Roman victory and dominance in the ancient world. In the middle of the 3rd century one is struck by its absence in imperial coinage. It falls to the so- called first great crisis (249–253)2, which covered the reign of a number of rulers: Trajan Decius and his sons Herennius Etruscus and Hostilian (249–251), Trebo- nianus Gallus and Volusianus (251–253), as well as Aemilianus (253). The lack of this theme in imperial coinage is intriguing. In the third century, during a time of wars which justified and enforced the presence of the theme, and in the peri- od of a glorification of the emperor as the victor and the unconquerable leader of an empire, the figure of a stranger-enemy was transposed to the reverses of coins, whose content touched upon various spheres of state-social life, not only of military questions3. The district was little known, when I wrote: I had traversed it hurriedly in 1882, 1886, and 1890, in each case only on a single hasty route. The excursion of 1882 resulted in placing Anaboura and Neapolis.2 No name was discovered in the excursions of 1886 and 1890. Prof. Sterrett explored the district very carefully in 1884 and 1885 ; but the numerous inscriptions, which he found, unluckily did not contain important topographical in- dications, and he assigned a position much too far north for the city of Pappa-Tiberiopolis.3 I shared his view on this critical point, with the result that many other towns were drawn away far north of their true situation, because they stood in some relation to Pappa, and when it seemed to lie away in the north, they had to be placed correspondingly.

Bu kısmın ardından konuyla ilgili modern araştırmalar üzerine bir inceleme yapılarak şimdiye kadar bu konuya dair çalışmaların nitelikleri ortaya konulmaktadır. İkinci bölüm, Sulla döneminden itibaren Roma ile Parthlar arasındaki ilişkiler üzerinden Fırat’ın kültürel bir nüfuz alanı olarak kabul edilişine ön ayak olan olaylar silsilesini gözler önüne serer.
