UNDP Project Document Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility PIMS 2898 Atlas Award 00044821 Atlas Project No: 00052843 Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in the Kazakhstani Sector of the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion Brief description The goal of the project is to help secure the globally significant biodiversity values of the Kazakhstan. The Republic of Kazakhstan is the largest country (271,730,000 ha) in Central Asia. Being located between the Siberian taiga, the Central Asian deserts, the Caspian Sea and the mountains of the Tien- Shan, the country possesses a great variety of landscapes and ecosystems. These include lowland deserts, steppes, montane forests,
