Bogdan C. Novak Papers, ca. 1940s to 1980s

Biographical/Historical Sketch

Dr. Bogdan C. Novak was born in , , on October 9th, 1919. He received a diploma in Law from the University of Ljubljana in 1944. Three years later, he received his teaching certificate from the Slovenian Teacher’s College in , British-U.S. Zone, Venezia Giulia. He taught in the British-U.S. Zone of the Free Territory of the from 1947 to 1951. Dr. Novak received his M.A. in History from Loyola University in 1955. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago six years later. After receiving his Ph.D., Dr. Novak taught at Indiana University and Roosevelt University. In 1961, Dr. Novak joined the University of Toledo Faculty as an associate professor and became a full tenured professor in 1966. His areas of expertise include nineteenth century Russia, Southern , and Central . He retired from the University of Toledo on July 1st, 1989. Dr. Novak has published many articles and has presented several papers regarding Slovenian nationalism, ethnic struggle in the Julian region, and British-American relations with the region. In 1970, Dr. Novak’s book Trieste 1941, the Ethnic, Political, and Ideological Struggle was published by the University of Chicago Press. In the book, he discusses the Yugoslavian and Italian struggle for the Julian region. Dr. Novak also describes the struggle between Italians, , and Croats living in the region. He also explains the political battles between pro-Communist and Anti-Communist groups. An Italian edition of the book was published by U. Mursia & C. Editore, Milan, . Dr. Novak was a member of the American Historical Society, the American society for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, the Conference on Slavic and East European History, the Midwestern Slavic Conference, the Ohio Academy of history, and Phi Alpha Theta. Bogdan C. Novak died on February 1st, 2011.

Scope and Content Note

The Bogdan C. Novak collection is divided into three series: Pre-1950s research Materials, the Newspaper Collection, and Post-1950s Research Materials. The collection has been organized to help patrons identify file contents. Files with Dr. Novak’s notes are marked with an (N) at the end of the file heading. Files with printed materials or copies of printed materials, are marked with a (C). Files containing both notes and printed copies are marked with (N and C). The materials in the collection are in several languages. The language of the file contents is usually the same language as the file heading.

Series List

S1 Pre-1950s Research Consists of pamphlets, papers, articles, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and Dr. Novak’s extensive research notes regarding the Free Territory of Trieste, Italy, Yugoslavia, and the international relations of the region. The research materials and notes concentrate on the history of Trieste and the Julian region until the mid-1950s and were largely used to write Dr. Novak’s book, Trieste 1941, the Ethnic, Political, and Ideological Struggle. The materials have been collected from a wide geographical area and thoroughly cover the history of the Julian region. Materials from Italy, Yugoslavia, Trieste, Great Britain, the United States, and several other countries are included. The research materials consist of both primary and secondary sources and are in several languages. Researchers may want to consult Novak’s book (DB 321.N68, 1970) before using this manuscript collection. S2 The Newspaper Collection Consists mainly of Italian and Slavic newspapers published in both Europe and the United States. The papers date mainly from the 1940s to the 1980s with the majority from the 1940s to the 1950s. Conditions in Trieste, Italian and Yugoslavian reactions to developments in the Julian region and international relationships in the region are addressed in the articles. The large majority of articles are in Italian and . Three boxes of unprocessed foreign periodicals and related microfilm are to be housed with the manuscript collection until Dr. Novak’s death or until other disposition is decided by him. These materials consist of: Trieste, 1954-78 (no. 25, 1958, missing); Gospodarstvo, no. 880 (1972) to no. 1622 (1987); and Relazioni Interazionali (scattered issues 1951-1953); and microfilm VG Gazette, 1945-1947(1 roll); FTT-British-US Zone Official Gazette, 1947-1954 (2 rolls); Bollentine Ufficiole (incomplete); and Committee of National Liberation of Trieste, Zone B: Land Without Liberty (1 roll). These materials are labelled as boxes 12-14. S3 Post 1950s Research Materials Consists of research notes, articles, papers, and newspaper clippings regarding the Julian Region since the mid-1950s. The materials describe modern tensions and developments in the region.
