Monitoring Medija 1/2012 Press Trends in Croatia 2011
Vozab, D. Press Trends in Croatia 2011. Monitoring medija 2012 Centar za istraživanje medija i komunikacije, Fakultet politickih znanosti, Sveucilište u Zagrebu Monitoring medija 1/2012 Press trends in Croatia 2011 Dina Vozab Centre for Media and Communication Research of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Zagreb, has taken the role of collecting data for the World Press Trends 2011 on newspaper industry in Croatia. World Press Trends is an annual report published by WAN-IFRA (World Association Of Newspapers And News Publishers) which presents statistics and analyses on newspaper industries worldwide. The report covers 233 countries and territories, among them Croatia. The following text summarizes the Croatian report on newspaper industry and trends in 2011. Production and circulation The economic problems will affect both direct and indirect support for newspaper industry. Consumers purchased 6, 84% less culture and recreation products (newspapers belong to this category according to Croatian Bureau of Statistics classification) in 2010 when compared to 2009. GfK research showed that in 2011 58% of surveyed households had expenditures in this category and these households spend less in this category than for some other products. The overall lower consumption affects indirect support for newspaper industry which is exemplified in lower investment in advertising in print media (16% decline in 2011 compared to previous year). Total revenue in newspaper publishing industry was 10, 62% lower in 2011 than in 2010. Total circulation of daily newspaper declined for 7,2% in 2011 when compared to previous year and total of 46 printed publications were erased from Croatian Chamber of Economy database, therefore officially closed. -

A Comparative Analysis of Media Freedom and Pluralism in the EU Member States
DIRECTORATE GENERAL FOR INTERNAL POLICIES POLICY DEPARTMENT C: CITIZENS' RIGHTS AND CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS CIVIL LIBERTIES, JUSTICE AND HOME AFFAIRS A comparative analysis of media freedom and pluralism in the EU Member States STUDY Abstract This study was commissioned by the European Parliament's Policy Department for Citizens' Rights and Constitutional Affairs at the request of the LIBE Committee. The authors argue that democratic processes in several EU countries are suffering from systemic failure, with the result that the basic conditions of media pluralism are not present, and, at the same time, that the distortion in media pluralism is hampering the proper functioning of democracy. The study offers a new approach to strengthening media freedom and pluralism, bearing in mind the different political and social systems of the Member States. The authors propose concrete, enforceable and systematic actions to correct the deficiencies found. A Slovak Perspective on the Lattimer Massacre
31 A Slovak Perspective on the Lattimer Massacre M. Mark Stolarik University of Ottawa As Michael Novak noted in the "Introduction" to his Guns of Lattimer: The True Story of a Massacre and a Trial, August 189 7- March, 1898, one of the greatest labor slaughters in American history "has been strangely neglected in history books."' Perhaps that is why the American film and television industry has also ignored it.2 And yet, as George Turner pointed out over a decade ago, there are plenty of sources on this tragic episode in Ameri- can labor history, including those produced by immigrants.3 I will look at the reaction of one immigrant group that was victimized at Lattimer-the Slovaks- in order to add to our knowledge of the reaction of various ethnic groups to this tragedy. The Slovaks were recent immigrants to the United States. They had been coming from their ancient homeland in the Kingdom of Hungary only since the 1870's in search of work in America's industrial heartland. The largest number found employment as unskilled laborers in the anthracite and bituminous coal fields of eastern and western Pennsylvania, in the steel mills of the Pitts- 1. Michael Novak, The Guns of Lattimer: The True Story of a Massacre and a Trial, August 1897-March, 1898 (New York: Basic Books, 1978), x. Since then the situation has not improved very much. When I checked the recent CD ROM on "American History and Life" under the heading "Lattimer Massacre," in our university library, I found only eight titles related to this subject: Michael Novak's book, a review of the book, three articles on the massacre commissioned by Novak and published in the annual Slovakia, 1977, an article by Harold Aurand on "Early Mine Workers' Organizations in the Anthracite Region," Penn- sylvania History, 58 (No.4, 1991), and an article in PennsylvaniaFolklore. -

Fondazione Internazionale Trieste Per Il Progresso E La Libertà Delle Scienze and SISSA Interdisciplinary Laboratory
EUROPEAN CITY OF SCIENCE 2020 Freedom for Science, Science for Freedom 1 FREEDOM FOR SCIENCE, SCIENCE FOR FREEDOM Dear Dr. Tindemans I would like to express again the support of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research – MIUR – to the candidature of Trieste to host the Euro Science Open forum (ESOF) in 2020. The candidature is solid and the proposed PROESOF2020 program, with the specifc goal of promoting discussion and deepening European scientifc collaboration ahead of the opening of ESOF is an unprecedented initiative represents an added value to the Valeria Fedeli proposal. Minister of Instruction, University and Research The motto “Freedom for Science, Science for Freedom”, is a refection of our times. Not only does it apply to the modern age, but it also provides guidance in the face of rapidly changing societies resulting from technological advancements and innovations, and Trieste, for it’s very well known high concentration of national and international Scientifc Institutions, functioning both as institutes of higher education as well as science and technology parks for high level research, and for both geographic and historical reasons, could not be a more ftting city to be named the European City of Science. Euro Science Open Forum would surely gain extra visibility and play an unprecedented role in the integration of Europe and in the relations between Europe and the Far-East and the South Mediterranean, and we believe that, with all its outreach and scientifc opportunities, ESOF 2020 would represent a milestone in Italy’ events to promote the role of science in society in a European context. -

The Construction of Ethno-Linguistic Identity Amongst Polish-Born
The Construction of Ethno-Linguistic Identity amongst Polish-born Adolescents Living in the UK Sara Rachel Jane Young Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Institute of Education, University College London 2018 2 Statement of originality I, Sara Rachel Jane Young, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Sara Rachel Jane Young April 2018 Word count (exclusive of list of references and appendices) approximately 93,750 words. 3 Abstract Polish accession to the European Union (EU) in 2004 led to an upsurge in the number of Poles coming to the UK. However, little research in socio and applied linguistics has investigated the experiences of Polish-born adolescents resident in the UK. Following the UK General Elections of May 2015 and June 2017, and the Referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU in June 2016, the climate in Britain has become one of an increasingly virulent anti-immigrant discourse, especially against EU migrants. Against this backdrop, this research purports to investigate how Polish-born adolescents resident in the UK negotiate the construction of their ethno-linguistic identity. The study explores the experiences of eleven adolescents (aged 11-16) living in small Polish communities in semi-rural settings in southern England, with a predominantly white British demographic. Fieldwork was conducted in spring 2016. A narrative approach was used, whereby participants are encouraged to tell their own stories. Based on an understanding of identity as contingent and a site of negotiation, the study draws on the notion of identity as positioning within discourse. -

Human dirofilariosis in Poland: the first cases of autochthonous infections with Dirofilaria repens. Ann Agric Environ Med. 2012; 19(3): 445-450. Abstract Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens Railliet et Henry, 1911 (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) is a subcutaneous parasite of dogs and other carnivorous animals, with human acting as incidental hosts. D. repens occurs endemically in warm climates on various continents, in Europe mainly in Mediterranean countries. The aim of this study was to summarize information on human dirofilariosis in Poland, taking into consideration parasitological and epidemiological data. Between April 2009 – December 2011, in the parasitological laboratories of Medical University in Warsaw and the National Institute of Public Health/National Institute of Hygiene, fragments of affected human tissues and parasite specimens were examined microscopically. Molecular methods were used to confirm the results from eight microscopic investigations. A literature review to summarize all data on dirofilarial infections in humans in Poland was conducted. -
