In both 2000 and 2001, the fire season in Alberta was officially declared on March 1, one month earlier than all previous years on record. Coinciding with this has been the aging of forests throughout North America beyond their natural historic ranges, and the increase in community and industrial developments in forested areas which are creating a greater number of wildland/rural/industry interface boundaries. The latter has required unique fire management strategies. As the severity of the 2001 fire season developed in late May, Land and Forest Service escalated man-up and aircraft expenditures significantly above normal levels in expection of increased fire load (Figures 1-3). Prior to fire activity in the Protection Zone of Alberta, municipalities in the agricultural areas were experiencing extreme fire behaviour -

(Pliny, Natural History of Animals, Vol. VII, 1) INTRODUCTION BERNARD HEUVELMANS Doctor in Zoological Sciences How did I come to study animals, and from the study of animals known to science, how did I go on to that of still undiscovered animals, and finally, more specifically to that of unknown humans? It's a long story. For me, everything started a long time ago, so long ago that I couldn't say exactly when. Of course it happened gradually. Actually – I have said this often – one is born a zoologist, one does not become one. However, for the discipline to which I finally ended up fully devoting myself, it's different: one becomes a cryptozoologist. Let's specify right now that while Cryptozoology is, etymologically, "the science of hidden animals", it is in practice the study and research of animal species whose existence, for lack of a specimen or of sufficient anatomical fragments, has not been officially recognized. I should clarify what I mean when I say "one is born a zoologist. Such a congenital vocation would imply some genetic process, such as that which leads to a lineage of musicians or mathematicians. -

The Global Forest Resources Assessments (FRA) are now produced every five years in an attempt to provide a consistent approach to describing the world's forests and how they are changing. If a report is not available, the FRA Secretariat prepares a desk study using earlier reports, existing information and/or remote sensing based analysis. PLANT1*, STOYAN BESHKOV2, PREDRAG JAKŠIĆ3, ANA NAHIRNIĆ2 114 West Road, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, CM23 3QP, England 2National Museum of Natural History, Sofia, Bulgaria 3Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics, University of Priština, Kosovska Mitrovica, Serbia ABSTRACT Pyraloidea (Lepidoptera: Crambidae & Pyralidae) were sampled in the territories of southern Serbia, Montenegro, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania on a total of 53 occasions during 2014, 2016 and 2017. A total of 173 species is reported here, comprising 97 Crambidae and 76 Pyralidae. Based upon published data, 29 species appear to be new to the fauna of Serbia, 5 species are new to the fauna of Macedonia and 37 are new to the fauna of Albania. The data are discussed. Among these 1 000 035 ha are proper forests and 989 000 ha are covered with forests but of irregular consistency. The forests are distributed as follows: Grand Caucasus 49%; Small Caucasus – 34%; Talish Mountains – 15%; Lowlands – 2%. The forests are an integral part of the ecosystem of Azerbaijan. They are generally related to the 1s t group. However, they play a significant role not only in climate forming processes, prevention of desertification, decrease of natural diversity, and greenhouse effect, but also help solve social, economic and cultural problems. Due to territorial heterogeneity and complicated landscape, trees and shrubs can grow as high as 20002200 metres above the sea level. It also accounts for the great diversity of plant life. 435 wood and shrubs species grow in our republic, of which 107 wood and 288 shrub species are widespread and cover large areas. Eastern beech (Fagus orientalis) plays an important role in forming of forest stands. It can be met on 32% of the forest land. Oak (Quercus) is a frequent tree species in both hilly and plain regions and occupies 31,5% of the forest area. -
