8 @RecNParks Last year, Mayor Pugh challenged each city agency to create a crime reduction plan in response to her Violence Reduction Initiative (VRI). As the City’s leader in youth recreation programs, BCRP created BALT (business, art, leisure and teamwork), offering extended nights and weekends at eight recreation centers. During BALT, young people ages 14 to 21 are provided with a safe space to hang out while cultivating important life skills.

bcrp.baltimorecity.gov 9 THE BAKE IS BACK! PART TWO

Last March, we celebrated the return of Baltimore City’s favorite roller-skating rink during “The Bake is Back,”— an unforgettable weekend of events that captured our city’s love for one of West Baltimore's most iconic hangouts. We appreciated the outpour of community support as we led a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to unveil Shake & Bake’s new improvements including: a custom-built skating rink floor, new HVAC system and concession area, improved interior lighting, updated lobby area and 500 new skates. The anticipation is high for phase two of the project, expected to be completed spring 2019. The second phase includes a complete renovation of the 32-lane bowling alley located on the second floor. For over 35 years, Shake & Bake has been a staple in the community and BCRP looks forward to bringing it back to its prominence. For the latest updates on Phase Two and plans for the community unveiling, stay tuned to @RecnParks on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or visit our website. bcrp.baltimorecity.gov 11 2018 marks the 130th anniversary of the Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens of Baltimore in Druid Hill Park. During its rich history, Kate Blom served nearly twenty years as the Conservatory manager, following her summer 2018 retirement. As a champion of horticulture and sustainability, Baltimore City Recreation & Parks (BCRP) was fortunate to have the second oldest glass conservatory in the United States under her care. Read more about the Rawlings Conservatory and Kate Blom’s work.

The Rawlings Conservatory first opened its door to the public in 1888. It houses exotic plants and is well known for its spring and annual poinsettia displays. The original Palm House was designed by Baltimore-based architect George “I would like Frederick and restored under Blom’s leadership. Additional noteworthy spaces in the Conservatory include the Mediterranean, Tropical and Desert Houses that the Rawlings were opened in 2004.

“As we become more of a technological society, we need to step back and Conservatory think about our planet, Mother Earth, and how to take care of her," says Blom. "A conservatory is a great place to teach our children that message. We have to to become conserve what we have.” more of a A highlight of Blom’s tenure was earning the Richard A. Lidinsky, Sr. Award, one of the highest honors of public service work from the City of Baltimore. She was destination.” recognized for her dedication as a public servant and her positive impact on the community and her colleagues. When Park Programming Division Chief, Fran Spero, reflected on her experience with Blom she noted “Kate lived and breathed the Rawlings Conservatory, the magnificent historic building that was her baby. She dedicated the majority of her time finding necessary resources to maintain the building, care for the plant collections, develop interesting shows and programs and look after its aging infrastructure. She will be dearly missed.”

HALLMARKS OF KATE’S LEGACY

• Establishment of a website for the Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens of Baltimore.

• Introduced the Little Leaves program, which brings second graders from Baltimore City Public Schools to the Rawlings Conservatory to learn and discover plants.

• Created Community Gardening Day (“volunteer day in action”), an annual event with supporters and volunteers of all ages that began in 2012. Blom states, “It gets better every year”.

Her parting words:

“Young people are the future of the industry. We need a more active push to engage people, especially, young people, into horticulture. The image of the Victorian conservatory needs to be rewritten. The Conservatory, in it of itself, is an avenue for change. We need to work at making our public gardens relevant as possible to residents, visitors, students and the like.”

Thank you Kate for your tireless years of service to Baltimore City and to the stewardship of the Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.

ages 4-18

$30/month, $4/visit

BCRP Aquatics program created a fun, engaging program to solve some of the common issues that arise from schooling children at home. Leaving a Physical Education program out of your child’s curriculum may cause your child to miss out on developing important character traits and lifelong values. BCRP youth swimming and other sports programs seek to make the sports experience for all children safe, fun and healthy. Programs promote the value and importance of sports and physical activities in the emotional, physical, social, and mental development of children. Our Aquatics program provides recreation opportunities such as Learn-to-Swim, Stroke Development or Lap Swim and others to homeschooling programs that can accommodate the needs of almost every student. Our instructors are American Red Cross certified and the sessions can be modified to suit every age and ability level while affordably fitting into your budget. Five reasons you should sign your child up:

1. Swimming boosts self-esteem. Children learn to be confident in the water. When kids set and achieve personal goals, they are more prepared to take on and effectively tackle later in life obstacles.

2. Swimming and playing sports helps develop teamwork and leadership skills. Working as a team to reach a common goal helps children develop communication and problem solving skills that will benefit them on the field and off.

3. Swimming is a natural stress reliever. Exercise is a great way for kids to loosen up and let go. Swimming and other sports also help kids develop tight bonds and socialize with their teammates which will provide them with a healthy support system.

4. Kids develop lifelong healthy lifestyle habits. Regular physical activity improves a child’s fitness and helps them to stay in shape.

5. It’s fun! The memories made through swimming and playing youth sports will last a lifetime. Kids may forget the name of their all their classmates, but the memory of touching the wall first after swimming a 500 (20 laps) or scoring the winning goal in a championship game will always stay with them. Other benefits of swimming and participating in youth sports activities are, but not limited to:

• Knowledge to lead fitness education • Weight management • Improvement of gross motor skills • Increases energy • Childhood obesity prevention • Increases focus • Diabetes prevention

30 @RecNParks THE MASTER PLAN

Baltimore City Recreation and Parks’ (BCRP) division of Capital Development & Planning is comprised of engineers, architects, construction inspectors and fiscal personnel.

The division is responsible for capital improvement projects throughout the BCRP system. Project plans typically include significant upgrades to sites such as recreation centers, playgrounds, trails, ball fields, historic facilities, dog parks and pools. Funding for new projects is approved by the Planning Commission while designs are developed in collaboration with local community groups and associations, other city agencies, funding partners and park users. The ultimate goal for Capital Development & Planning is to design and implement high-quality parks and facilities that serve a wide variety of users and support the overall wellness of mind, body and environment of our city residents.

2018-2019 projects expected to make a BIG splash:

MIDDLE BRANCH FITNESS & WELLNESS CENTER AT CHERRY HILL

Currently in the design phase, the 32,500 square foot Fitness & Wellness Center will be located in Reedbird Park adjacent to the Cherry Hill Splash Pool. This regional facility will serve multiple South Baltimore communities and offer a wide variety of amenities and programs. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019 and will feature a gymnasium, natatorium, open fitness area and a walking track. In addition, there will be exercise studios and various multipurpose community rooms. Athletic fields, walking paths and basketball courts are among the planned amenities that will complement the new facility. Its anticipated debut is scheduled for spring 2021.

DRUID HILL PARK AQUATIC CENTER

Currently in the design phase, this project will create a destination waterpark that attracts users from all across the city. The Aquatic Center will include a new pool house, a wading pool and several pool upgrades. This construction project will add a water slide, a water play structure, a climbing wall, a diving board and various lap lanes. Residents of all ages will be able to enjoy the new amenities when the pool reopens in the summer of 2021.

LATROBE PARK FIELD HOUSE

Designed to be an iconic, modern structure in a historic Baltimore park, the field house reinforces elements initially intended by the Olmsted Brothers in their 1904 park plan. A collaboration between our Capital division, architectural consultants and numerous community members, the building will be a Baltimore City gem. It boasts a performance stage, a movie screening backdrop, and a unique, upturned roof. Slated to open fall 2018, Latrobe Field House will serve all park users, especially players and fans of Banner Field.

36 @RecNParks SMALL, BUT MIGHTY

s the city’s leader in conservation, ABCRP is always looking for innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact. Camp Small is just one example of how the agency has found new uses for discarded items. For over 70 years, Camp Small has been Baltimore City’s collection facility for removed and downed trees. In 2016, the agency, recognizing the value in wood preservation, led Camp Small in a new direction. Using seed money from the Bureau of Budget Management Resources, BCRP created its’ Urban Wood Utilization initiative. The program took off quickly and through sales revenue and savings, BCRP was able to repay the fund within the first two years of operation. Since 2016, the agency has identified Collected lumber getting ready to be processed numerous uses for reclaimed wood. Using Camp Small logs to create stakes for citywide tree planting efforts reduces costs by 60 percent per stake! With demonstrated success, the agency is determined to increase efforts. Recently, Camp Small was awarded a grant from American Forests for the purchase of a portable bandsaw mill and a lumber kiln to support a Wood Products Program. This new program will allow for in- house lumber production. Today, Camp Small continues to serve the community through the sale of logs and woodchips. No matter the need, buying from Camp Small is an ideal way for residents to purchase locally-sourced sustainable materials, while contributing to Baltimore’s infrastructure. 42 @RecNParks Facilities with numbers can be found on the map on page 45 THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP As stewards of 4,700 acres of parkland, caring for the city’s numerous green spaces is a full- time job. Overseen by the Forestry Division, Baltimore City Recreation & Parks (BCRP) works to protect our numerous plant species from invasives, proactively prune overgrown limbs and branches and remove down trees in the wake of storms or natural disasters. In addition to our conservation efforts, our Park Maintenance and Horticulture divisions manage our landscaping and beautification efforts, maintaining courts, fields and flowerbeds. Beyond the work of our dedicated staff, we leverage the assistance of countless volunteers that share our love for Baltimore City. Perhaps one of the agency's most vital partners are the Friends Groups, community-based volunteer groups officially affiliated with BCRP. From weekly farmers markets to monthly cleanups, these grassroots organizations work together to accomplish great things. Friends Groups also engage with residents and external partners (businesses, schools, foundations) to serve as the voice of the park. Fostering relationships with the Friends Groups is just one way BCRP works with communities citywide to improve the health, cleanliness and vitality of our parks.

With our friends in mind, BCRP recently secured grant funding to support local park improvements. The PARKNPLAY grants provide up to $5,000 to care for public parks and community gardens within Baltimore City Recreation and Parks grounds. To apply for a PARKNPLAY grant, visit: bcrp.baltimorecity.gov/park-and-play-grants.
