Z Lojzetom Golobom sva si ogledovala mirnega, možatega Alekseja Ugarova, zgovorno Valjo, Sergeja Savvona, večno skromnega Toljo, dolgega Balkarca Rahajeva in še nekaj fantov. Osebno pobudo v zasebnem življenju in še posebej v udejstvovanju v gorah, pri izbiri ciljev brez »putjovke«, v stenah in smereh brez maršrutnih listov. Nama z Lojzom so misli ušle v Kavkaz ugibajoč, kje neki so člani naše četrte odprave. Prinesli so izkušnje in doži- vetja v domače alpinistične odseke na Jesenice, v Kranj in Celje, v Beograd in Zagreb, v ljubljanski APD in Matico, v Šoštanj in koroški AO. V našem planinskem glasilu, revijah in časnikih, v zbirkah fotografij in diapozitivov in celo v nekaj filmih imamo lepo dokumentacijo.

  • Liste Des Courses De Claudio Barbier
• 'The Past Is a Foreign Country . . .'
PETER GILLMAN ‘The past is a foreign country . .’ t certainly feels like a foreign country when I think back to it, if not Ianother planet. I remember traversing a frozen landscape where cold and wind reigned. Tom and John were ahead of me on the path that led to the glistening western flank of Quinag. It was March 1969 and Tom had his eye on yet another new route. This one followed a gully that rose from the crest of a tongue of scree and culminated in an overhang festooned with candelabras of ice. I edged up the steps Tom had carved with his axe, balancing on my crampons and reassuring myself that I was in good hands. Then Tom launched himself on to the candelabra pitch, slivers of ice dislodged by his axe showering down. I saw his crampons slithering and heard him call down: ‘I think we’ll have to give the mountain best.’ But he pressed on and disappeared beyond the overhang. Typically for a Patey foray, it was already late in the day; barely an hour remained before nightfall, giving me the opportunity, in the hallowed journalistic phrase, to make my excuses and leave. John stayed to follow Tom up his new route, while I tip-toed back down the gully and across the glen, head braced against the wind, to the point where Tom had parked his battered Skoda. Tom and John arrived just as the last of the light disap- peared, their faces burnished by the cold and wind, telling of the hurricane that assaulted them on the top, threatening to lift them off their feet as they searched for the line of descent.

Private collection JOHN HARLIN III From Dawn to Decadence Exploring new ground on Mont Blanc's lnnominata Arete s there still unclaimed territory in Old Europe? That was the question I Mark Jenkins and I struggled with while planning our rendezvous in the Alps. Mark is from Wyoming, where the buffalo roam, and I from Oregon, where the trees grow; we get together when schedules allow in order to climb something new - preferably new to the world, not just to us. Alas, our visits are infrequent, and our climbing skills modest at best. So the Alps didn't seem promising for new routing. After all, this continent of iiber-alpinists has a climbing history that pre-dates our national identity. Fortunately, the previous year I had lured a Brit by the name of Roger Payne onto an unclimbed ridge deep in America's Grand Canyon, where very little has been climbed. Our crumbling 1000-metre arc~te was the desert equivalent of an alpine outing, with precarious piles of choss standing in for corniced snow. I asked Roger about the chances for mortal-scale new routes in the Alps, and he volunteered that the Italian side of Mont Blanc still presented opportunities. This facet of the mountain seems relatively uninteresting to the Euro crowd because of the difficulty of access - or, to quote my favourite Diemberger maxim, 'the barrier of effort'. No problem there: wobbling under the influence of oversized packs is an American speciality, and what's more, Mark and I both had been staff writers for the montWy bible of the beast-of-burden set, Backpacker magazine.

  • Mountaineer: Thirty Years of Climbing on the World's Great
Mountaineer: Thirty Years of Climbing on the World’s Great Peaks. Chris Bonington. Diadem Books, London, and Sierra Club Books, San Francisco, 1989. 192 pages, numerous color illustrations. £17.95 or $29.95. Chris Bonington’s latest book, his tenth overall and his third autobiography, is certainly a pleasure to look at. With large images of ravishing mountain scenery, Mountaineer is a coffee-table book par excellence. The photos, well chosen and admirably reproduced, constantly remind us of the reasons we go to the mountains. I can think of no other mountaineer except Kurt Diemberger who has climbed big Himalayan peaks over such a long time span. Since 1960, when he reached the top of Annapurna II, Bonington has made seventeen trips to Asia. And though he has climbed only one 8000-meter peak, Everest, this was in 1985, when he was 51 ! Much of Bonington’s early climbing life will be familiar to his followers. After surviving youthful forays to the crags of Great Britain, the author ventured to the Alps in his twenties, accomplishing some significant first ascents. In this abbreviated autobiography, these years pass quickly. Later he began his trips to the Himalaya, the subject of most of the remainder of the book. Over the years the author climbed with dozens of legendary figures, among them John Harlin, Tom Patey, Dougal Haston, Ian Clough, Mick Burke, Nick Estcourt, Joe Tasker, and Peter Boardman. All these men are now dead, killed in action. And the last five died on Bonington’s expeditions, a sobering statistic. Those who have survived numerous Himalayan expeditions—men like Bonington, Diemberger, Scott, Messner—are the living legends, and an aura of respect and mystery surrounds them.
