The demersal fish fauna of the mesohaline zone of the Westerschelde estuary (south -west Netherlands) was sampled intensively in the period 1990-1992. Almost 500 beam trawl samples were taken in both subtidal (330 samples) and intertidal (144 samples) habitats. These yielded 44 fish species, mostly as juveniles. The area was found to function as a nursery for several demersal fish species. and harboured large populations ofhyper - benthic mysids. Three gobies, three flatfish, one clupeoid and one gadoid dominated the fish fauna, while three mysid species were important components of the holohyperbenthos. From c. 1500 stomach contents of 25 fish species, 44 prey species were identified, the most abundant of which were also common in the hyperbenthal. The demersal fish community consisted of a group that foraged subtidally on fast-moving epi- and hyperbenthic prey (for example gadoids, gobies and clupeoids) and a group that foraged on slow-moving or sessile endobenthic organisms, mainly in intertidal areas (for example most flatfish species). Mysidacea occurred in >50 % stom - achs analysed and were taken as prey by 19 of the 25 fish species. Mysids were most important in the diets of Pomatoschistus minutus, P. -

SUMMARY We have determined the mineral composition of statoliths in 169 species or subspecies (256 populations) of the family Mysidae on a worldwide scale. Including previously published data, the crystallographic characteristics are now known for 296 extant species or subspecies: fluorite (CaF2) in 79%, vaterite (a metastable form of crystalline CaCO3) in 16%, and non-crystalline (organic) components in 5%, the latter exclusively and throughout in the subfamilies Boreomysinae and Rhopalophthalminae. Within the subfamily Mysinae vaterite or fluorite were found in three tribes, whereas other three tribes have fluorite only. The exclusive presence of fluorite was confirmed for the remaining seven subfamilies. Hotspots of vaterite were found in Amazonia and the Pontocaspis, in each case with reduced frequencies in main and tributary basins of the Atlantic and N-Indian Ocean. Vaterite is completely absent in the remaining aquatic regions of the world. In accordance with previous findings, fluorite occurred mainly in seawater, vaterite mostly in brackish to freshwater. Only vaterite was found in electrolyte-poor Black Water of Amazonia, which clearly cannot support the high fluorine demand for renewal of otherwise large fluorite statoliths upon each moult. -

Naylor Marine BiologicalStation, Port Erin (Text-figs. I-II) This paper aims at describing the external morphology of seven British species of Idotea from the functional and developmental aspects, thus revising earlier descriptions, such as those of Collinge (1917), which were based largely on adult specimens. Limitations of earlier descriptions are apparent, but some characters can be sifted from the older literature and combined with characters emphasized in this paper to give a schematic description of the seven species. I am grateful to Mr J. S. Colman for criticism of this work, to Dr I. Gordon for facilities at the British Museum (Natural History), and for examining the Linnaean specimens of Oniscus marinus; and to Mr G. M. Spooner for help in the construction of the Key. MATERIAL AND METHODS The crustacean genus Idotea belongs to the suborder Valvifera of the order Isopoda, and the seven species of the genus which are dealt with in this investigation are I. linearis (Pennant), 1. viridis (Slabber),! I. baltica (Pallas),! 1. neglecta G. O. Sars, 1. emarginata (Fabricius), 1. granulosa Rathke, and I. pelagica Leach. All these species, and no others, are recorded from the Isle of Man (Moore, 1937, etc.), though the records of I. viridis are open to some doubt; the finding of I. viridis in ,this investigation seems to constitute the first certain record of the species in the Isle of Man (Naylor, 1955a). -
