How cliché it seems to state, “it feels like yesterday” when we launched the inaugural issue. This is a sense that one generally gets during times of heightened activity and of great joy. The publication of Yellow Magazine represents both to me and, hence, time is passing at a breathtaking pace. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect about publishing the magazine is the consistent support communicated to us by you, the readers. As I take part in many of the community events that occur during the year, I am humbled by the appreciative comments that have been shared with me. I am proud to be an Asian American, and I am proud of the contributions that Asian Americans make to the community at large. 1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. Following Eve Sedgwick, who proposed that a “rich tradition of cross- gender inventions of homosexuality” should be studied separately from gay and lesbian literature, this dissertation examines male homoerotic fictions authored by women. These fictions foreground a disjunction between authorial and textual identities in gender and sexuality, and they have often been accused of inauthenticity, appropriation, and exploitation. -

LA TIMES – MOVIES Making waves Wave Releasing UNIVERSAL MESSAGE: Gauger’s “Owl and the Sparrow,” a love story set in modern-day Vietnam, features Le The Lu, Pham Thi Han and Cat Ly. Wave Releasing, a start-up of Vietnamese American filmmakers, aims to find a wider outlet for their out-of-the-mainstream voices. By My-Thuan Tran January 18, 2009 Writer-director Stephane Gauger had high hopes for his debut feature, "Owl and the Sparrow," shot on the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City. The Vietnamese-language film, about an orphan who plays matchmaker to a lonely zookeeper and a flight attendant, blazed through the 2007 film festival circuit, snagging awards and accolades in the Hollywood Reporter and Variety. Winning the Crystal Heart Award at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis was a watershed for the filmmakers, signifying that their subtitled film reached beyond the confines of Vietnamese enclaves like Orange County's Little Saigon. "It was huge when it won an award in a festival that represents Middle America," said executive producer Timothy Bui. "That told us that this film can succeed in the mainstream market, not just for Vietnamese audiences." But finding a company to distribute the film to American theaters was another matter. Gauger and Bui wanted to market the film to both Vietnamese and mainstream audiences but had a difficult time finding a distributor who knew how to tap into Vietnamese communities. "We had a few meetings, and we kept hearing, 'We love the movie, but we don't know how to market it,' " Bui said. -

OWENS, WENDY M., Ph.D., MAY 2018 ENGLISH IDENTITY AND THE IN-BETWEEN SPACE IN TRANSRACIAL ADOPTEE LITERATURE: MAKING SPACE FOR THE MISSING VOICE (307 PP.) Dissertation Advisor: Babacar M’Baye Within the past few years, adoptees have been challenging the positive adoption narratives about them by implementing corrective action movements through various scholarly, literary, and rhetorical media in order to claim their voices and agency. Exploring such movements, this dissertation focuses on several significant books about transnational adoption. These works are: Perpetual Child: Dismantling the Stereotype; Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption; Flip the Script: Adult Adoptee Anthology; Lucky Girl: A Memoir; Ghost of Sangju: A Memoir of Reconciliation; and Fugitive Visions: An Adoptee’s Return to Korea. The narratives individually and collectively offer alternative voices in the exploration of identities across borders, cultures, and boundaries in ways that intersect with immigration and ethnic literature. Each book strengthens the intersectionality conversation of transnational adoptees and the importance of understanding their in-between identities as unique. Moreover, each narrative reflects the transnational adoptees’ temporary umbrella of white privilege and their 1.5 generation immigration status that set them apart from same-race and transracial domestically- adopted persons as well as their first-generation cohort and second-generation same-aged peers. Focusing on these dynamics, this dissertation attempts to privilege transnational adoptee books and scholarship that work to shift the conversations about orphan/adoptees to those created by adoptees. It aims to make a space for their missing voices.
