    Yang 15605_f5_63-86 5/23/05 12:49 PM Page 63 CHAPTER THREE THE BAILIN BUDDHIST TEMPLE: THRIVING UNDER COMMUNISM Fenggang Yang and Dedong Wei Bailin is a Buddhist temple located about 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of Beijing. Before 1988, only a dilapidated pagoda (stupa) remained standing alone outside the county seat of Zhaoxian in Hebei. It was an abandoned site of ancient relics that only a few overseas pilgrims occasionally came to visit to reflect upon its glorious past. This Buddhist site can be traced to the ninth century .., when an eminent monk, dubbed the Zhaozhou Monk because of the temple’s location, developed a distinct tradition of Chan Buddhism— the Zhaozhou Chan. The temple might be traced even back to the second century, when a Buddhist temple was first built on this site. In any case, this Buddhist center began to decay in the late Qing Dynasty, if not earlier. At the start of the “Cultural Revolution” (1966–1976), everything but the stupa that housed the Zhaozhou Monk’s ashes was destroyed. The year 1988 was a turning point. A Buddhist monk, the Venerable Master Jing Hui, came with the mission to revitalize Buddhism in Hebei Province. In the decade and a half following, a number of buildings have been constructed one after another, including the Guan Yin Hall, the Bell and Drum Tower, the Meditation Hall, liv- ing quarters, and so on. The non-stop construction climaxed with the grandeur of Ten-Thousand Buddha Hall completed in 2003. Now, the Bailin Temple has become a fourteen-acre (80 mu) com- pound of magnificent buildings in the traditional Buddhist style of architecture.

Flying over from Harbin, we arrived in Tianjin, a metro- politan city crowded with people and vehicles. Jianfu Guanyin Monastery, a nunnery with the second largest Buddhist Academy for Bhikshunis in China, is located here. The Abbess, Dharma Master Miaoxian is young and promising. She is the out- standing disciple of virtuous and repu- table Bhikshuni Dharma Master Longlian who established the first nun- nery with a Buddhist Academy in China. No wonder Dharma Master Miaoxian could renovate the small and old temple into such a grand Bodhimanda and Buddhist Academy for nuns in three years! Her workload is tremendous, for in addition to the ceremonies, she manages to speak Dharma often to benefit living beings. Approximately 200 nuns study in this institute. Although located in the heart of a busy downtown area, this admirable Guanyin Monastery emerges like a pure lotus flower untainted by the mud. On a peaceful, sunny day we came back to Beijing, reaching the halfway point of our trip. Dharma Master Sure and DM Lai had to return to the United States because of their busy schedules. The re- maining delegates climbed the Great Wall to be a hero (It is said that he who doesn’t reach the Great Wall is not a true man.) Later, we also visited the great, world famous architectural masterpiece, the Temple of Heaven.

I regularly visited Qutan Si (Gautama Temple) in the 1990s with colleagues at the Qinghai Cultural Relics and Archaeology Institute, and grew familiar with the precipitous rocky road that had probably ensured the survival of the temple over the five hundred and fifty years since it was built. The temple stands adjacent to a small town inhabited by Tibetans and Chinese, one that hosts annually a festival of hua'er singing that is among the liveliest in China's north-west. (Fig. 3) Only about ten monks, mostly novices, were living in the temple when I visited, and some of the younger ones were listlessly trying to master several elementary Chinese characters on their Tibetan slates. They sprang into action, however, whenever the small team of local archaeologists and conservators took officials or visitors around, and it was not uncommon for a monk to hit or strike out at an outsider, or archaeologist, who drew too close to a holy statue or a mural.
