In order to better align NGO sustainable development efforts in ways that are beneficial to the populations they serve, it is crucial to listen to perspectives that are typically marginalized in our current global system. This thesis explores synergizing NGO-Malian artist partnerships in innovative, mutually understandable, and mutually beneficial ways to increase NGO project effectiveness and efficiency. This case study features twelve interviews with Malian dancers and musicians residing in Bamako, Mali. Dr. John Fenn, both my academic and thesis adviser for the Arts and Administration Master's Program, has had enormous patience adapting to my learning style throughout the program. I also thank the additional readers for this thesis: Dr. Doug Blandy and Dr. Stephen Wooten. Dr. Blandy, a mentor in different ways, models progressive, interactive teaching. I am in awe with his graceful social management in his varying roles at the University of Oregon, including Arts and Administration Director, Associate Dean of Architecture and Allied Arts, and now, Senior Vice Provost. Dr. Wooten, International Studies professor, offered extensive knowledge from having lived and researched in Mali for years. He helped translate Malian cultural complexities so that my research is better communicated to academic audiences. Serendipitously, he and his family were living in Bamako, during his sabbatical when I conducted my research. I saw him a couple of times while I was there. I thank my mentors Doug Cohen, Resource Council Chair for National Youth Initiatives for the United States Partnership for United Nations/United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization's Decade for Sustainability Education (UN/UNESCO), and Carl Jeffry Goebel, Conflict Manager and Change Catalyst. Also, I am grateful to the rest of the staff and faculty who facilitated my education throughout my Arts and Administration graduate program, undergraduate programs, and all academic studies. I am also thankful for my life experiences that contributed to who I am today. I would not have conducted thesis research in West Africa if it were not for Gora Mangane. He has been the most impressive cross-cultural interpreter, teacher, and friend during my time learning and working in West Africa. Without Gora's wisdom, integrity, vii and patience, I would not have returned to West Africa after my first trip in 1999-2000. He is the first person who generously welcomed me to stay with him and his family as he helped me understand and live in West African culture. Additional teachers and liaisons have played key roles in my positive experiences in West Africa: the rest of Gora Mangane's and the Kane family in Senegal, the Bangoura and Camara families in the Republic of Guinea, the Diakites in Mali, and Ronna Neuenschwander and Shelly Stein, both originally from the United States but from whom I have learned to develop a tremendous heart connection with West Africa. Thank you to the interpreters, translator Ousmane Kandji, and interviewees who brought their perspective to this thesis. Each participant has added important information to this study and my learning. In turn, I am able to continue to do my life's work— helping to facilitate more sustainable living practices and better quality of life. I send gratitude to my family for the gifts they have given me. I miss my grandparents: Francis and Harold Doerfler and Dorothy and Joseph Schuetz. My parents, Patricia and Stephen Schuetz, have always assured that my basic needs are met and encouraged me to participate in numerous growth opportunities and to explore many activities and perspectives. I plan to incorporate the teachings from my interviews to prompt future sustainability-related dialogs in the hope that people will continue to make the necessary efforts to better work together as global citizens. In particular I would like to dedicate this writing to three people who have passed away: the Professor Artist, Malick Mangane, and Mr. Camara. The Professor Artist, the interviewee who offered the most detailed interview for this research, especially touched my heart as he patiently spent three and a half hours explaining his ideas. Malick Mangane, younger brother to Gora Mangane, passed too early in his life. Finally, I wish to acknowledge Mr. Camara, director of one of the Guinean ballets, Soleil d'Afrique, with whom I danced.
