Chapter 2 Literature Review
CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1. BASIDIOMYCOTA (MACROFUNGI) Representatives of the fungi sensu stricto include four phyla: Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota and Zygomycota (McLaughlin et al., 2001; Seifert and Gams, 2001). Chytridiomycota and Zygomycota are described as lower fungi. They are characterized by vegetative mycelium with no septa, complete septa are only found in reproductive structures. Asexual and sexual reproductions are by sporangia and zygospore formation respectively. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota are higher fungi and have a more complex mycelium with elaborate, perforate septa. Members of Ascomycota produce sexual ascospores in sac-shaped cells (asci) while fungi in Basidiomycota produce sexual basidiospores on club-shaped basidia in complex fruit bodies. Anamorphic fungi are anamorphs of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota and usually produce asexual conidia (Nicklin et al., 1999; Kirk et al., 2001). The Basidiomycota contains about 30,000 described species, which is 37% of the described species of true Fungi (Kirk et al., 2001). They have a huge impact on human affairs and ecosystem functioning. Many Basidiomycota obtain nutrition by decaying dead organic matter, including wood and leaf litter. Thus, Basidiomycota play a significant role in the carbon cycle. Unfortunately, Basidiomycota frequently 5 attack the wood in buildings and other structures, which has negative economic consequences for humans. 2.1.1 LIFE CYCLE OF MUSHROOM (BASIDIOMYCOTA) The life cycle of mushroom (Figure 2.1) is beginning at the site of meiosis. The basidium is the cell in which karyogamy (nuclear fusion) and meiosis occur, and on which haploid basidiospores are formed (basidia are not produced by asexual Basidiomycota). Mushroom produce basidia on multicellular fruiting bodies. -

A PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST OF ARIZONA MACROFUNGI Scott T. Bates School of Life Sciences Arizona State University PO Box 874601 Tempe, AZ 85287-4601 ABSTRACT A checklist of 1290 species of nonlichenized ascomycetaceous, basidiomycetaceous, and zygomycetaceous macrofungi is presented for the state of Arizona. The checklist was compiled from records of Arizona fungi in scientific publications or herbarium databases. Additional records were obtained from a physical search of herbarium specimens in the University of Arizona’s Robert L. Gilbertson Mycological Herbarium and of the author’s personal herbarium. This publication represents the first comprehensive checklist of macrofungi for Arizona. In all probability, the checklist is far from complete as new species await discovery and some of the species listed are in need of taxonomic revision. The data presented here serve as a baseline for future studies related to fungal biodiversity in Arizona and can contribute to state or national inventories of biota. INTRODUCTION Arizona is a state noted for the diversity of its biotic communities (Brown 1994). Boreal forests found at high altitudes, the ‘Sky Islands’ prevalent in the southern parts of the state, and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P.& C. Lawson) forests that are widespread in Arizona, all provide rich habitats that sustain numerous species of macrofungi. Even xeric biomes, such as desertscrub and semidesert- grasslands, support a unique mycota, which include rare species such as Itajahya galericulata A. Møller (Long & Stouffer 1943b, Fig. 2c). Although checklists for some groups of fungi present in the state have been published previously (e.g., Gilbertson & Budington 1970, Gilbertson et al. 1974, Gilbertson & Bigelow 1998, Fogel & States 2002), this checklist represents the first comprehensive listing of all macrofungi in the kingdom Eumycota (Fungi) that are known from Arizona. -

Fungus and Lichen Genera in the NEMF Database Taxonomic hierarchy: phyllum > class (-etes) > order (-ales) > family (-ceae) > genus. Total number of genera in the database: 526 Anamorphic fungi (see p. 4), which are disseminated by propagules not formed from cells where meiosis has occurred, are presently not grouped by class, order, etc. Most propagules can be referred to as "conidia," but some are derived from unspecialized vegetative mycelium. A significant number are correlated with fungal states that produce spores derived from cells where meiosis has, or is assumed to have, occurred. These are, where known, members of the ascomycetes or basidiomycetes. However, in many cases, they are still undescribed, unrecognized or poorly known. B. Ellis, and the late Dr. W. C. Sturgis. These include many speci- mens collected by the earlier American students, Bilgram, Farlow, Fullmer, Harkness, Harvey, Langlois, Macbride, Morgan, Peck, Ravenel, Rex, Thaxter, Wingate, and others. There is much type and authentic material. There are also several thousand specimens received from later collectors, and found in many parts of the world. During the past twenty years my associates and I have collected and studied in the field more than ten thousand developments in eastern North America. -

The list includes all species published till year 2011. Twenty-one genera and 251 species were recorded, 121 species from the family Coprinaceae and 130 from Strophariaceae. KEY WORDS—Agaricomycetes, Coprinus, Psathyrella, Psilocybe, Stropharia Introduction This is the second checklist of the Argentine Agaricales. Previous one considered the families Amanitaceae, Pluteaceae and Hygrophoraceae (Niveiro & Albertó, 2012). Argentina is located in southern South America, between 21° and 55° S and 53° and 73° W, covering 3.7 million of km². Due to the large size of the country, Argentina has a wide variety of climates (Niveiro & Albertó, 2012). The incidence of moist winds coming from the oceans, the Atlantic in the north and the Pacific in the south, together with different soil types, make possible the existence of many types of vegetation adapted to different climatic conditions (Brown et al., 2006). Mycologists who studied the Agaricales from Argentina during the last century were reviewed by Niveiro & Albertó (2012). It is considered that the knowledge of the group is still incomplete, since many geographic areas in Argentina have not been studied as yet. The checklist provided here establishes a baseline of knowledge about the diversity of species described from Coprinaceae and Strophariaceae families in Argentina, and serves as a resource for future studies of mushroom biodiversity. -

And There Were Mushrooms… By NAMA President, David Rust From the plane coming into Little Rock, we could see a lot of green: to the north where the Ozarks begin, trees and waterways dominated the landscape. We could see right off that Shepherd of the Ozarks would serve as a beautiful base camp for a foray. Big Creek, which runs through the property, has cut through the layers of lime- stone over time, creating a beautiful backdrop. Trees were turning color, and frost touched the meadow. On the first evening, Theo Witsell, botanist from the Arkansas Heritage Program, presented a look at local ge- ology, habitats and the diverse botany of Arkansas, focusing first on the larger picture of plateaus, river bottoms, prairies and woodlands, and finishing with a breathtaking display of rare plants. Friday morning we ventured out into places like Gunner Pool, Barkshed Creek, Blanchard Caverns, Leatherwood Wilderness Area, Buffalo River, Ozark National Forest, Woolly Hollow, and Moccasin Springs. And there were mushrooms. Before this year’s foray, Searcy County had only five records of fungi. The initial tally for this foray is 280 species and counting, with an expected boost from participants in the PolyPeet Project, who scoured the woods for poly- pores and inspected incoming foray collections. Alfredo Justo led a team from Clark University’s Hibbett Lab. The goal of the PolyPeet Project is to study the taxonomy and evolution of Polyporales, and produce comprehen- sive modern monographs in selected genera. We found mushrooms like Russula flavida, Lactarius in- digo, Amanita daucipes, and Amanita polypyramis, Daeda- leopsis confragosa, Craterellus ignicolor, Cortinarius scau- rotraganoides, Polyporus radicatus, and a beautiful purple collection of Pseudobaeospora. -
Diversity of Macromycetes in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” in Belgrade
40 (2): (2016) 249-259 Original Scientific Paper Diversity of macromycetes in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” in Belgrade Jelena Vukojević✳, Ibrahim Hadžić, Aleksandar Knežević, Mirjana Stajić, Ivan Milovanović and Jasmina Ćilerdžić Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, Takovska 43, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia ABSTRACT: At locations in the outdoor area and in the greenhouse of the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, a total of 124 macromycetes species were noted, among which 22 species were recorded for the first time in Serbia. Most of the species belong to the phylum Basidiomycota (113) and only 11 to the phylum Ascomycota. Saprobes are dominant with 81.5%, 45.2% being lignicolous and 36.3% are terricolous. Parasitic species are represented with 13.7% and mycorrhizal species with 4.8%. Inedible species are dominant (70 species), 34 species are edible, five are conditionally edible, eight are poisonous and one is hallucinogenic (Psilocybe cubensis). A significant number of representatives belong to the category of medicinal species. These species have been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine of Far Eastern nations. Current studies confirm and explain knowledge gained by experience and reveal new species which produce biologically active compounds with anti-microbial, antioxidative, genoprotective and anticancer properties. Among species collected in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, those medically significant are: Armillaria mellea, Auricularia auricula.-judae, Laetiporus sulphureus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Schizophyllum commune, Trametes versicolor, Ganoderma applanatum, Flammulina velutipes and Inonotus hispidus. Some of the found species, such as T. versicolor and P. ostreatus, also have the ability to degrade highly toxic phenolic compounds and can be used in ecologically and economically justifiable soil remediation. -

Twenty-eight species in the family Lycoperdaceae, commonly called ‘puffballs’, are reported from Arizona, USA. In addition to widely distributed species, understudied species (e.g., Calvatia cf. leiospora and Holocotylon brandegeeanum) are treated. Taxonomic descriptions and illustrations, which include microscopic characters, are given for each species, and a dichotomous key is presented to facilitate identification. Basidiospore morphology was also examined ultrastructurally using scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out on nrRNA gene sequences (ITS1, ITS2, and 5.8S) from 42 species within (or closely allied to) the Lycoperdaceae.
