Like our Northwest Film & Video Festival, which celebrates the unique visions of artists in our community, PIFF seeks to engage, educate, entertain and challenge. We invite you to explore and celebrate not only the art of film, but also the world around you. It is said that film is a universal language—able to transcend geographic, political and cultural boundaries in a singular fashion. In the spirit of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous observation, “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler who is foreign,” this year’s films allow us to discover what unites rather than what divides. The Festival also unites our community, bringing together culturally diverse audiences, a remarkable cross-section of cinematic voices, public and private funders of the arts, corporate sponsors and global film industry members. This fabulous ecology makes the event possible, and we wish our credits at the back of the program could better convey our deep appreci- ation of all who help make the Festival happen.

~ editors letter ~ The year of 2015 started with our becoming members of the Creative Europe, while by the end of the year, with the purpose of supporting the cinema industry, Geor- gian government introduced a cash rebate system, we have been working on since 2009. I believe both of these initiatives will make a huge contribution to the develop- ment of our industry. 1 In 2016, movies of different genres will be released. It is notable that three feature films among those are directed by women. Projects we are currently working on are very important. We have announced new types of competitions on script development, including comedy and children’s movies, adaptation of Georgian prose of the 21st century, scripts dedicated to the 100th anniver- sary of Georgia’s independence, and animation. Winners are given long- term work- shops by European script doctors, so 2016 will be dedicated to the script development. The young generation has become active in the field: we had premieres of six short films and a short film by Data Pirtskhalava “Father” was the winner of the main prize in this category at Locarno International Film Festival. Other films – “Ogasavara”, “Fa- ther”, “Exit”, “Preparation”, “The First Day” – are also participating at different festivals. Masters of Georgian cinema are also making films side-by-side with the young genera- tion. I have to mention a film by Rezo Esadze “Day as a Month” with its extraordinary nar- rative structure and visualaspect, which will take its noteworthy place in our film collection. One of the most important goals this year will be to return Georgian cinema heritage from archives in Moscow and design a suitable storage facility for it.

Steve’s Film Festival Reviews for 2003 (With Comments About 2002) By Steve Munro Ratings !#%?$ An appalling piece of junk (new rating this year) 0 I walked out (rating unused in 2003) * I stayed to the bitter end (but probably shouldn’t have) ** Maybe worth seeing once *** Recommended **** First rate ***** Best of the festival The reviews are arranged in the order of viewing. Festival Main Title The main title gets more boring every year. All of the Festival posters this year have someone holding a film frame in front of them through which one can see the background. This image is transferred to the screen with a woman on a long wooden bridge whose rails and posts suggest/become frames on a film. By the second day, I was seriously bored with this, and astounded that the Festival has only prints of this with overexposed and out of focus titles. The only time I saw it properly was at digital projections. Universal Studios’ salute to the volunteers, on the other hand, was always warmly received even though it’s seen over and over again because the audience really appreciates the work the volunteers (and the Festival staff) do to make this whole thing possible. People’s Choice Trailer AGF has three trailers and one poster this year, all based on the concept that a character is trapped in a job other than his/her true desire. · The Poster: A teacher who would rather be in the movies has Dick, Jane and Spot in screenplay format on her blackboard. · A Private Eye really wants to be a director/cinematographer, and critiques his surveillance of a tryst while, presumably, the tearful husband watches on a camcorder’s monitor.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS HAUPTSPONSOR AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS UNSER SCHIRMHERR Liebe Filmfreundinnen und Filmfreunde, „Around the World in 14 Films“ ist nach inzwischen zehn erfolgreichen Jahren zu einem kleinen Juwel in der deutschen Filmlandschaft geworden.

  • S Falling Leaves (Giorgobistve, 1966) VOL
ESSAY Life and Politics at the Georgian Table Otar Iosseliani’s Falling Leaves (Giorgobistve, 1966) VOL. 58 (OCTOBER 2015) BY KONSTANTY KUZMA In Otar Iosseliani’s Falling Leaves, a young man faces a crisis of conscience when he’s expected to support a decision irreconcilable with his convictions. Niko, who only recently joined the lab of a local wine collective, is put under pressure to bottle deficient wine. Though he knows the use of gelatin fining could easily fix the product, state-ordered productivity quotas allow for no delays. “Look around you”, his superior tells him in a confidential conversation, “this is no time for principles.” Even the collective’s director says he can tell apart good wine and bad one – it’s Niko’s signature the winery’s after, not his opinion. Before we’re introduced to this ugly reality of Soviet-time wine collectives and with it to the film’s main story line, Iosseliani reminds us that traditional wine-making is still prevalent in Georgia’s rural parts. The film opens with an idyllic pastiche of rural life which throws together scenes from diverse regions and contexts that radiate with harmony and reconciliation. In contrast to the urban reality, which we’re told is replete with individualism and mutual mistrust, in the rustic prologue we find no conflict, no industry, no fiddling and no sounds but the melodies of land and traditional music. Where the collective’s wine production is so poor that the vintners overseeing it won’t have it, wine here appears to wander straight to the table, which we soon learn is an integral life of village life.

Network Films: a Global Genre? Vivien Claire Silvey December 2012 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University. ii This thesis is solely my original work, except where due reference is given. iii Acknowledgements I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort my dear supervisor Cathie Summerhayes has invested throughout this project. Her constant support, encouragement, advice and wisdom have been absolutely indispensable. To that master of words, puns and keeping his hat on during the toughest times of semester, Roger Hillman, I extend profound gratitude. Roger‟s generosity with opportunities for co-publishing, lecturing and tutoring, and enthusiasm for all things Turkish German, musical and filmic has been invaluable. For all our conversations and film-loans, I warmly say to Gino Moliterno grazie mille! I am indebted to Gaik Cheng Khoo, Russell Smith and Fiona Jenkins, who have provided valuable information, lecturing and tutoring roles. I am also grateful for the APA scholarship and for all the helpful administration staff in the School of Cultural Inquiry. At the heart of this thesis lies the influence of my mother Elizabeth, who has taken me to see scores of “foreign” and “art” films over the years, and my father Jerry, with whom I have watched countless Hollywood movies. Thank you for instilling in me a fascination for all things “world cinema”, for your help, and for providing a caring home. To my gorgeous Dave, thank you for all your love, motivation, cooking and advice. I am enormously honoured to have you by my side.
