He had translated a lot of Children’s literature in the early 20th century. His had made great contributions on Children’s literature, mainly including: 1) pioneering the translation of Children’s literature; 2) promoting the prosperity of translation and writing of Children’s literature; and 3) establishing a unique translation style of Children’s literature in China. 1. Introduction As a famous translator in the history of Chinese translation, Zhou Zuoren (1885-1967) has translated a number of literary works in his entire life. Over nearly 20 years, his translation activity, works and principle have been deeply studied by Wang Yougui and many other scholars. We found that in the early 20th century, many of Zhou Zuoren’s translated works can be classified into Children’s literature. The works of Children’s literature translated by him are in a great amount and good quality, having enormous impact on Chinese Children’s literature. 2. THE MAJOR SCHOOLS OF TIBETAN BUDDHISM By Pema Khandro A BIRD’S EYE VIEW 1. NYINGMA LINEAGE a. Pema Khandro’s lineage. Literally means: ancient school or old school. Nyingmapas rely on the old tantras or the original interpretation of Tantra as it was given from Padmasambhava. b. Founded in 8th century by Padmasambhava, an Indian Yogi who synthesized the teachings of the Indian MahaSiddhas, the Buddhist Tantras, and Dzogchen. He gave this teaching (known as Vajrayana) in Tibet. c. Systemizes Buddhist philosophy and practice into 9 Yanas. The Inner Tantras (what Pema Khandro Rinpoche teaches primarily) are the last three. d. It is not a centralized hierarchy like the Sarma (new translation schools), which have a figure head similar to the Pope. Instead, the Nyingma tradition is de-centralized, with every Lama is the head of their own sangha. There are many different lineages within the Nyingma. e. A major characteristic of the Nyingma tradition is the emphasis in the Tibetan Yogi tradition – the Ngakpa tradition. However, once the Sarma translations set the tone for monasticism in Tibet, the Nyingmas also developed a monastic and institutionalized segment of the tradition. But many Nyingmas are Ngakpas or non-monastic practitioners. f. A major characteristic of the Nyingma tradition is that it is characterized by treasure revelations (gterma). These are visionary revelations of updated communications of the Vajrayana teachings. Ultimately treasure revelations are the same dharma principles but spoken in new ways, at new times and new places to new people. Because of these each treasure tradition is unique, this is the major reason behind the diversity within the Nyingma. -

Abstract: Saeki Ariyiko was one of the world’s premier historians of ancient Japanese and East Asian history. His knowledge of texts and his ability to use them in creative ways and thus bring antiquity to life were virtually unmatched. One of his last works was a reading of the single most commented upon text in Sino-Japanese historical and cultural relations, the Treatise on the People of Wa in the Chronicle of the Kingdom of Wei (known in Japan as Gishi Wajinden). Saeki’s book, entitled Gishi Wajingden o yomu 魏 志倭人伝を読む (Reading the Treatise on the People of Wa in the Chronicle of the Kingdom of Wei), appeared in two volumes (over 450 pages in total) and was published by Yoshikawa kōbunkan in 2000. To give a flavor of the work, I offer a translation of the introductions to each of the volumes. In the history of this relationship, a cyclical pattern of Chinese attempts, both violently assimilative and subtly corrosive, to control Tibetan Buddhism and a multifaceted Tibetan resistance to defend their religious heritage, will be revealed. This article will develop a security-based logic for that cyclical dynamic. For these purposes, a two-level analytical framework will be applied. First, the framework of the insecurity dilemma will be used to draw the broad outlines of the historical cycles of repression and resistance. However, the insecurity dilemma does not look inside the concept of security and it is not helpful to establish how Tibetan Buddhism became a security issue in the first place and continues to retain that status. The theory of securitisation is best suited to perform this analytical task. As such, the cycles of Chinese repression and Tibetan resistance fundamentally originate from the incessant securitisation of Tibetan Buddhism by the Chinese state and its apparatchiks. The paper also considers the why, how, and who of this securitisation, setting the stage for a future research project taking up the analytical effort to study the why, how and who of a potential desecuritisation of all things Tibetan, including Tibetan Buddhism, and its benefits for resolving the protracted Sino- Tibetan conflict. -

Joyce maneuvers freely the English language to express a deep hatred for religious hypocrisy and colonizing oppressions as well as a well-masked patriotism for his motherland. In this aspect Joyce shares some similarity with his Chinese translator Xiao Qian, also a prolific writer. Index Terms—style, translation, Ulysses, James Joyce, Xiao Qian I. INTRODUCTION James Joyce (1882-1941) is regarded as one of the most innovative novelists of the 20th century. For people who are interested in modernist novels, Ulysses is an enormous aesthetic achievement. Attridge (1990, p.1) asserts that the impact of Joyce‟s literary revolution was such that “far more people read Joyce than are aware of it”, and that few later novelists “have escaped its aftershock, even when they attempt to avoid Joycean paradigms and procedures.” Gillespie and Gillespie (2000, p.1) also agree that Ulysses is “a work of art rivaled by few authors in this or any century.” Ezra Pound was one of the first to recognize the gift in Joyce. He was convinced of the greatness of Ulysses no sooner than having just read the manuscript for the first part of the novel in 1917. -

Yanchang Oilfield
Chapter 3 China’s First On-Land Oilfield: Yanchang Oilfield 1 Yanchang Oilfield Established, 1905 Yanchang Oilfield is situated in the vast area east of Yan’an in northern Shaanxi Province and west of the Yellow River. Geologically, it belongs to the Ordos Basin, which covers the provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia. Its topography, with abundant gullies and ravines, is typical of the Loess Plateau. The existence of oil in northern Shaanxi has been well- documented in Chinese historical records since early times. In 1905, the Qing dynasty Governor of Shaanxi Province, Cao Hongxun 曹洪勋, wrote a memorial to the throne, requesting permission to establish the Yanchang Oilfield. Although the Qing court granted his request, it did not give him any funding. He boldly used 81,000 taels (= 2,331.25 kg) of the local government’s silver originally intended for wasteland reclamation to build the oilfield. He appointed Expectant District Magistrate Hong Yin 洪寅 to oversee the operation. After two years of preparation, they hired a Japanese technician, Satō Hisarō 佐藤弥朗, who started drilling at Yan-1 Well, in Qili Village 七里村, on June 5, 1907, using a percussion rig brought from Niigata, Japan. Drilling was completed at 81 m on September 10, and the well had an initial daily out- put of 1 to 1.5 tons, which it maintained for ten years. The crude oil from Yan-1 was processed in small copper pots and produced 12.5 kg of lamp oil per day. It was sent for analysis in Xi’an, and it was found that when burnt, it produced a small amount of white smoke.
