The Hummingbirds of Nariño, Colombia

El departamento de Nariño en el sur de Colombia expande seis Areas de Aves Endemicas y contiene una extraordinaria concentración de zonas de vida. En años recientes, el 10% de la avifauna mundial ha sido registrada en Nariño (similar al tamaño de Belgica) aunque ha recibido poca atención ornitólogica. Ninguna familia ejemplifica más la diversidad Narinense como los colibríes, con 100 especies registradas en siete sitios de fácil acceso en Nariño y zonas adyacentes del Putumayo. Cinco nuevas especies de colibríes para Colombia son presentadas (Campylopterus villaviscensio, Heliangelus strophianus, Oreotrochilus chimborazo, Patagona gigas, y Acestrura bombus), junto con notas de especies pobremente conocidas y varias extensiones de rango. Una estabilidad regional y buena infraestructura vial hacen de Nariño un “El Dorado” para observadores de aves y ornitólogos. Introduction Colombia’s southern Department of Nariño covers c.33,270 km2 (similar in size to Belgium or one quarter the size of New York state) from the Pacific coast to lowland Amazonia and spans the Nudo de los Pastos massif at 4,760 m5. Six Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs 39–44)9 and a diverse range of life zones, from arid tropical forest to the wettest forests in the world, are easily accessible. Several researchers, student expeditions and birders have visited Nariño and adjacent areas of Putumayo since 1991, making several notable ornithological discoveries including a new species—Chocó Vireo Vireo masteri6—and the rediscovery of several others, e.g. Plumbeous Forest-falcon Micrastur plumbeus, Banded Ground-cuckoo Neomorphus radiolosus and Tumaco Seedeater Sporophila insulata7. -

E-mail : [email protected] Abstract. – Description of the nest and parental care of the Esmeraldas Woodstar (Chaetocercus berlepschi) in western Ecuador. – The Esmeraldas Woodstar is a poorly known and endangered hum- mingbird endemic to coastal moist forests of western Ecuador. No detailed information has been pub- lished on the species’ breeding biology. We encountered 21 active Esmeraldas Woodstar nests in coastal Manabí and Santa Elena provinces during a study of the species’ natural history from October 2007–May 2008. The nest is a tiny cup of balsa (Ochroma pyramidale) fibers and composite (Aster- aceae) seeds held together with spider webs and camouflaged with lichens. Nests were placed an aver- age of 7 m above the ground in thin vertical forks of small trees or shrubs, frequently near creeks or roads. The eggs are white and the clutch size is 2. Unlike most hummingbirds, male and female Esmer- aldas Woodstar fledglings have distinguishable plumages. We collected information on all phases of the reproductive period with field observations and 37 h of video recording. -

Monitoring of fog capture and bird communities helped to build social capital for conservation at Loma Alta, Ecuador and encouraged the local community to protect 3000 hectares of tropical forest. Data collected during monitoring were used to facilitate action and cooperation at local, regional, national, and international levels for conservation of biodiversity in western Ecuador, including the designation of an Important Bird Area in the region. Through involvement with the monitoring efforts, local people became more aware of the value of ecosystem services, learned about local birds and their conservation status, became familiar with ecotourism, and began to include conservation of biodiversity with sustainable development planning in their community. The context of monitoring, the objectives and participants, field methods, impacts in terms of conservation action, and the costs and benefits of the two monitoring initiatives are described. Introduction There is widespread agreement that a global extinction crisis is occurring today (Soule´and Wilcox 1980; Ehrlich and Wilson 1991; Lubchenco 1998). -

Taking from Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador, we explored a variety of habitats, spanning from coastal wetlands to arid Tumbesian scrub/dry forest, to rich Andean foothill forest (both west and east of the Andes), to the spectacular High Andes and even to the fringes of the Amazonian avifauna. Tons of birds every day, and in a little over two weeks, including the extension, we recorded a highly impressive 631 species (including the heard only ones). And with that certainly most of the standout species that compose this brilliant tour… the magnificent Long-wattled Umbrellabirds; the peculiar White-tipped Sicklebill and the uncommon Scaled Fruiteater; the 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Southern Ecuador 2018 www.birdquest-tours.com sensational Jocotoco Antpitta, a breathtaking male Ecuadorian Hillstar, stunning White-capped and Orange- throated Tanagers. Perhaps less expected highlights were the tailless Grey-capped Cuckoo at Buenaventura, a group of the rarely seen Red-faced Parrot posing in full view, the fascinating Ocellated Tapaculo and the uncommon Giant Conebill. This of course only scratches the surface. If I were to mention 10 species of owls (including Black-and-white, Spectacled, Band-bellied and Rufous-banded Owls), and an amazing 63 hummingbirds (including Neblina Metaltail, Spangled Coquette, Ecuadorian Hillstar and Esmeraldas Wood), it begins to convey what a mind-boggling avian feast we experienced! This exciting adventure started in the early morning of January 18th when we left the big city of Guayaquil. -
Detailed Species Account from the Threatened
LITTLE WOODSTAR Acestrura bombus E2 This poorly known hummingbird has been recorded from west-central Ecuador to central Peru at elevations ranging from sea level to 3,050 m. It has been found in humid evergreen forest and, more commonly, in the transitional zone between dry and wet forests, and thus may occur primarily in moist forest, a seriously threatened habitat in western South America, and this may perhaps explain the relative paucity of modern records. DISTRIBUTION The Little Woodstar has been found in the tropical and subtropical zones of western Ecuador and north-west Peru, and in the upper tropical to the lower temperate zones of eastern Ecuador south to central Peru, where it is mainly found in the middle río Marañón, but also occurs locally in the upper río Huallaga drainage. Part of this range could be represented by vagrants, but there are no data indicating where breeding takes place. Ecuador Records (with coordinates from Paynter and Traylor 1977) from western Ecuador are as follows: (Esmeraldas) Esmeraldas (Chapman 1926); (Pichincha) below Hacienda Santa Rosa, at río Cinto, along the new Lloa-Mindo road, where a specimen (in MECN) was collected at 2,030 m in August 1987 (J. The Non-Breeding Range of Esmeraldas Woodstar Michael Fogden
>>O GL BALLY THREATENED BIRD EsmeRAlDAS WooDSTAR The non-breeding range of esmeraldas Woodstar Michael Fogden The recent observation of two individuals of the globally threatened Esmeraldas Woodstar in the subtropics of north-west Ecuador has provided valuable new information concerning the species’ potential non-breeding range, which has been more or less unknown to date. The author also re- visits the identification of the females and immatures of this poorly known bird, based on his own observations and a recently published paper on the species, which hopefully might permit other observers to contribute to our knowledge of this woodstar, especially during the non-breeding period.
