Throughout my graduate studies, my family and friends in Texas and Mississippi have offered continued encouragement, threats, and love as I worked through this process. Some have wondered if they will ever see me again, others were likely happy for the break. I look forward to seeing them all on a more regular basis in the years to come. No one has endured as much of this process with me as my wife, Jessica Mitchell, and my two strong, brave, patient daughters, Larkin and Logan. This process has lasted nearly as long as we have iv known each other, and I so look forward to shifting together into a new phase of our lives. v Food, Space, and Mobility: The Railroad, Chili Stands, and Chophouses in San Antonio and El Paso, 1870-1905 Marvin Charles Bendele, Jr., Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2015 Supervisor: Steven Hoelscher Co-Supervisor: Elizabeth Engelhardt As the railroad changed the urban landscape of Texas cities after the Civil War, it offered new economic opportunities for restaurateurs in both public and private spaces. This dissertation illustrates the ways chili stands owners working in San Antonio plazas and Chinese restaurateurs working in El Paso chophouses at the end of the nineteenth century negotiated the use of space in the growing cities. While chili-stand owners subverted the prevailing narrative definition of the restaurant by performing with success another version outside of that narrative, the Chinese chophouses negotiated stories about their uncleanliness and vice by adopting some of those same prevailing, dominant ideas and definitions regarding the American restaurant. These two stories offer both a glimpse into contests over food space at the end of the nineteenth century and complicate the history of the American restaurant industry as it has been told over the last century.     Second Generation William Thomas Robinson 1837-1920 William Thomas Robinson, first child of John H. Robinson and Elizabeth Sheridan, was born 16 Jun 1837 in New Orleans, Louisiana.1 2 3 His birth day is recorded as 15 Jun 1837 in Pauline Bremond Robinson’s family bible, but most records, including a family tree written by William’s son,4 indicate the birth date as 16 June. As a young child, he moved with his family to Little Rock, Arkansas and then to Austin, Texas in 1855. When he was 15, he was sent to northern cities to attend school. He spent nine years at a boarding school in Cincinnati, Ohio5 and then went to New York City.6 He returned to Texas and in 1860 he worked with his father in the dry goods business in Austin. On 23 Jun 1862 William joined the ranks of the confederacy with the Thirteenth Texas Volunteers, Company C as a private. This regiment was known at Bates’ Regiment. He joined on 23 Jun 1862 in Austin, Texas and was mustered in on 30 Jun 1862 in Velasco, Texas.7 William’s two brothers, John H. and Alfred H. Robinson were in the same regiment. In 1861, Col. Joseph Bates raised the 13th Texas Volunteer Regiment in Galveston and Brazoria County with headquarters in Velasco, Texas. The 13th Texas Volunteers included two companies of cavalry, two companies of artillery and six infantry companies. It was not unusual for Texas regiments, particularly those assigned to coastal defense, to include artillery and cavalry companies. The regiment was assigned coastal duty between Galveston and Matagorda during most of the war.

Contemporary chroniclers vividly show how the city grew between 1846 and 1861 from an ancient, crumbling Mexican village to a large, bustling commercial and military supply center. The United States Army caused many of the changes that occurred in the period. During the Mexican War, 1846-1848, San Antonio became the military headquarters for Texas and a main supply depot for the fighting forces in Mexico. After the war, members of the Corps of Topo¬ graphical Engineers opened roads from the supply depot at San Antonio to forts along the Texas frontier. Military expenditures became the lifeblood of San Antonio's economy; the forts provided the area with unprecedented protection. The new roads brought increasing numbers of traders and travelers to San Antonio and facilitated the city's first adequate postal system. More and more newcomers settled in San Antonio to capitalize upon the expanding opportunities. Between 1846 and l86l the city's population increased more than eight time from approximately a thousand in 1846 to over eight thousand in 1861. A heterogeneous group, composed mostly of Anglo- Americans and European immigrants, the new residents soon outnumbered the older Mexican inhabitants and became the new directors of San Antonio's development. They guided the city through a period of cultural, social, and economic growth.

The last published chronology of San Antonio was in 1950 by Edward Hunsinger. For this new study, approximately 1½ years was spent developing additional details and entries of events in San Antonio’s 300-year history. Other chronologies were studied, books were referenced and honored historians were consulted. Every attempt was made to edit and re-edit the many editions of the chronology until this latest edition is being published.

Biographical/Historical Note: The Houston, East & West Texas Railway Company was chartered on March 11, 1875, to build a narrow gauge railroad between Houston and Texarkana and to connect Houston with Corpus Christi and Laredo through Victoria and Goliad. Branch lines were projected to Tyler and Waco and from Goodrich to a point on the Sabine River. Only the line east of Houston was built, and then in the direction of Shreveport, Louisiana, rather than to Texarkana. Paul Bremond was the first president of the railroad. The initial directors of the company were Bremond, F. A. Rice, S. C. Timpson, Henry Fox, W. D. Cleveland, Abraham Groesbeeck, and John Shearn. It was the first through-line railroad providing access to East Texas, which greatly aided in the development of the East Texas lumber industry. Lumber towns such as Diboll, and other places such as Lufkin and several county seats were either established or revitalized by their proximity to the road. The railroad was nicknamed the "Rabbit” due to the bumpy ride and tendency to jump the track in the early days of operation, and the company's initials were said to stand for "Hell Either Way Taken.” By April 1877 twenty miles had been completed.

Cirincione (b.1940) worked most of his career at Bell Helicopter in the Hurst area prior to retiring in 2004. He notably served as an engineer for the development of the V-22 Osprey. Donor's degrees include two from Tarrant County College, and a business degree from Texas Christian University. Extent: 30.11 linear feet (45 boxes) Restrictions The collection is open for research. It is recommended that researchers contact the archives before visiting. Administrative Information A long-time contributor to the Tarrant County Archives, Dominick J. Cirincione donated the items contained in this collection over the span of two decades, 1993 to 2018. He began his donations after Dee Barker asked him for photographs of the log barn that are now in this collection. Dominick J. Provenance: Cirincione gave some items related to the Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association (TOMFRA) in honor of Joanne Pratt. This collection also contains items which belonged to the donor’s sister, Francine Reese, who donated them in honor of her late husband, Tony Reese. Some items related to Bell Helicopter came from C. Texans by and large were recent emigres clustered into homogenous groups that preserved native folkways and ideals. Less than one-fourth of the population in 1860 could claim residence before statehood in 1845. The immigrants' cohesiveness, the dramatically varied Texas climate and terrain, and the lack of adequate transportation in many portions of the state made the economic interests of Texas as diverse as its population sources. Germans in the Hill Country, tejanos in San Antonio, cotton planters from the Lower South along the Brazos or Colorado rivers, or Yankee merchants in Houston or Galveston, had different concerns and values.

While the time period may seem overly ambitious, the geographic territory is highly concentrated, covering just a few miles. San Antonio holds the largest concentration of colonial Spanish architecture in the United States. In July, 2015, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) granted World Heritage Status to the missions. This distinguished designation includes Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo), Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción, Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, Mission San Juan Capistrano, and Mission San Francisco de la Espada. Because detailed information on the design and construction of the missions has yet to be found, speculation and romantic myths have grown up around the missions. These romantic myths were the basis for Anglo collective memories, particularly after the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. This dissertation examines the origins of the missions as the sources of some of these myths and memories. Advances in both print capitalism and transportation brought San Antonio’s missions to the attention of the traveling public.

Law- suits resulted and financial losses occurred within the 2 company. The county is bounded on the north by Falla and Lime- stone Counties, on the east by Leon County, on the south by Brazos County, and on the west by Milam and Burleson Counties.
