To this end. Professor Muir received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation which allowed him to take the time to consult in detail the courthouse records of Harris and its neighboring counties, where many of William Marsh Rice's financial trans- actions were recorded, as well as providing him with an oppor- tunity to visit and consult records in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Rice was born and spent his early years, in Dunellen, New Jersey, where Rice and his wife kept a country estate for some years, and in New York City, where Rice spent the last years of his life. On the basis of the material that he collected. Professor Muir wrote and published a number of short articles on special as- pects of WilHam Marsh Rice's life and career. The most impor- tant of these articles are "William Marsh Rice, Houstonian," East Texas Historical Journal, II, 1 (Feb., 1964), pp. 32-39 and "Murder on Madison Avenue: The Rice Case Revisited," Southwest Review (Winter, 1959), pp. 1-9. In addition, at the time of his death, Professor Muir left a number of unpublished manuscripts, several of which had been read before one or another of the local historical societies but which had never been revised for publication and several of which were no more than preliminary sketches. The most significant of these unfin- ished papers are "Wilham Marsh Rice and his Institute," "Wil- liam Marsh Rice, His Life and Death," "The Beginnings of the Rice Institute," "Wilham Marsh Rice, His Life and Death, the vi RICE UNIVERSITY STUDIES History of a Fortune," and "A Man Morbidly Virtuous—Albert T. Patrick," the manuscripts of all of which are now found with the Andrew Forest Muir Papers that have been placed in the Archives of the Fondren Library at Rice University. Professor Muir, however, never found the opportunity to bring his work together and to utilize the vast amounts of de- tailed information that he had collected concerning William Marsh Rice. That these materials have now been organized and edited is due to the dedicated interest of Professor Muir's execu- tors, the late Charles W. Hamilton and his wife Mary Alice Hamilton, the encouragement of Willoughby Williams and Ben Blanton of the Development Office of Rice University, and the support of a number of friends of Rice who contributed gener- ously toward financing the project. For the actual work of sorting through Professor Muir's pa- pers, checking his sources, filling in the gaps, and bringing life to inanimate data. Rice University Studies has had the extremely good fortune to secure the services of Sylvia Stallings Morris (BA, Bryn Mawr College, 1948). Mrs. Morris has produced the following study of William Marsh Rice. It is not intended to replace the work that Professor Muir, with his love of minute detail and his insistence on exhaustive research, would have written. But it is a balanced view of the Founder's life and presents William Marsh Rice as a warm human being, the cen- ter of a drama of no mean proportions. I am confident that Professor Muir would be pleased. Katherine Fischer Drew Editor Rice University Studies PREFACE Ever since I was a graduate student in the Institute in 1940 I have been interested in WilHam Marsh Rice. I was astonished then, and I remain astonished, that so little information was available on the founder and so little interest in him evinced by members of the uni- versity community . .The two questions which fascinate me are What sort of man was Rice? and How did he accumulate his fortune? —A. F. Muir This was the task to which Andrew Forest Muir addressed himself and for which he was granted a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1957, but the work remained incomplete at the time of his death in 1969. The extent and variety of the notes and manu- scripts left by Dr. Muir, nevertheless, are ample evidence of the range of his research and the zest which he brought to its pur- suit. I feel greatly privileged to have had access to this material. Nothing, however, is more certain than that it is well-nigh impossible for one person to take over another's research mate- rial and from this turn out anything like the study which the original writer intended. In the case of Andrew Forest Muir, who possessed a singularly felicitous turn of phrase, a wide and exhaustive acquaintance with Texas history, and a feeling for the fine shades of human behavior by which everything became grist to his mill, such an undertaking is especially difficult. I have done my best to retain the scope and depth of Dr. Muir's work; undoubtedly mistakes have crept in—for these I alone am responsible. The Forged or Patrick Will _ 169 IX William Marsh Rice in his later years CHAPTER I THE EARLY YEARS "Just below Springfield," wrote the Reverend Timothy Dwight, that indefatigable traveler and preacher who was soon to become the president of Yale University, as he journeyed northward along the Connecticut River valley at the end of the eighteenth century, "we crossed a vigorous millstream on which, a little eastward, is erected the most considerable manufactory of arms in the United States."' By 1812, when David Rice, the third to bear that name, moved his young family to Springfield from Norfolk County, Massachusetts, and went to work in the forging-shop at the Springfield Armory,^ the town had changed very little. For "a few hundred dollars," David Rice bought a square clapboard house of one and one-half stories on Hickory Street,^ perhaps not anticipating that four-month-old Louisa was to be the first of ten children. A son, David, was born two years later, and a second, William, in March 1816; Josiah and Lucy Ann, who followed in 1819 and 1821, respectively, both died in infancy; but Minerva, Caleb, Charlotte, and Frederick, who followed at intervals of about two years, lived and thrived. The last of David Rice's daughters, Susan, did not long survive her birth in 1833.^ The Hickory Street house stood at no great distance from the Armory's Middle Watershops; with an accessible and abundant supply of waterpower, these continued to expand and David Rice advanced from working in the forging-shop to the boring of gun barrels and the making of bayonets, until in 1833 he was appointed an Inspector of the Watershops.^ It was a position of some importance, which brought with it added responsibilities, and undoubtedly neither David Rice nor Patty, his wife, had the 2 RICE UNIVERSITY STUDIES time to single out any one of their children for particular notice; certainly, there is very little known about their second son, Wilham Marsh Rice, during this Springfield period of his life. Central Massachusetts must nonetheless have been a pleasant place to grow up. Timothy Dwight observed that Springfield was the oldest town in Hampshire County (from which, in David Rice's day, Hampden County had been separated), lying along a single street on the western side of the Connecticut River.

    1 “CRAZY PRODUCTS OF A CRAZY MIND”: JOSIAH GILBERT HOLLAND In my opinion, there is a reason why Josiah Gilbert Holland became so very rich and so very famous by writing under the pen name “Timothy Titcomb.” It is due to what I suppose to be the ultimate dark nasty secret about the reading habits of the American public: we don’t like to need to read something more than once. Holland was successful, it seems, because incapable of writing anything that anybody would be willing to glance at a 2d time. Now in the 21st Century we have passed well beyond that point — none of us now read anything by “Timothy Titcomb” even a 1st time. 1. Josiah Gilbert Holland was born in Belchertown, Massachusetts. The family was poor, although of American pedigree (the claimed ancestors John Holland and Judith Stevens Holland were supposedly members of a church that was organized before sailing from Plymouth in Devonshire, that had emigrated into the wilderness at Dorchester), and at an early age he would work in a factory. He would write the lyrics to the Methodist hymn “There’s a Song in the Air,” and many others. Watson) In the late 1840s and 1850s, the American Democratic party redefined itself as “conservative.” Yet Democrats’ preexisting dedication to majoritarian democracy, liberal individualism, and white supremacy had not changed. Democrats believed that “fanatical” reformers, who opposed slavery and advanced the rights of African Americans and women, imperiled the white man’s republic they had crafted in the early 1800s. There were no more abstract notions of freedom to boundlessly unfold; there was only the existing liberty of white men to conserve. Democrats therefore recast democracy, previously a progressive means to expand rights, as a way for local majorities to police racial and gender boundaries. In the process, they reinvigorated American conservatism by placing it on a foundation of majoritarian democracy. Empowering white men to democratically govern all other Americans, Democrats contended, would preserve their prerogatives.     j. g. holland and the 'religion of civilization' in mid-nineteenth century america robert j. scholnick On May 20, 1888 Walt Whitman, in conversation with Horace Traubel, recalled one of the most hurtful experiences of his literary career, a rejection letter from Dr. Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881), the powerful editor of Scribner's Monthly. Sometime after moving to Camden following his stroke in 1873, Whitman was visited by his old friend John Swinton, an editorial associate of Charles Dana on the New York Sun, who, the poet recounted, urged me to offer something to Dr. Holland ... I demurred but John persisted. 'Do it, do it!' he said. 'Why should I do it?—Why?' I asked John. He still insisted. 'For certain reasons,' he said. I sent a poem, which was rejected—not rejected mildly, noncommittedly, in the customary way, but with a note of the most offensive character. I was sick and blue at the time: the note provoked me: I threw it into the fire. I was always sorry I destroyed it: had I been well I should not have done so: it was a good specimen insult for the historian.1 One can only speculate on Swinton's motives in encouraging the unarmed Whitman to enter the lion's den. Holland's moralistic Scribner's was rapidly becoming the most popular magazine of the American middle class, and no doubt Whitman realized that, as a writer with a reputation for unchastity, his chances of acceptance at the magazine were remote indeed. Built 1903-4; Jardine, Kent & Jardine, architects Landmark Site: Block 558, Lot 43, in part, consisting of the property on which the 1903-04 structure is located On September 7, 2006 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Van Tassell & Kearney Auction Mart and the proposed designation of the related Landmark site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Twenty-four people spoke in support of designation, including Council member Rosie Mendez and representatives of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Tom Duane, State Assembly member Deborah Glick, the Union Square Community Coalition, the Municipal Art Society, the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, the Society for the Architecture of the City, the Historic Districts Council, Landmark West! and the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Summary The former Van Tassell & Kearney auction mart is a three-story Beaux-Arts style building on the south side of East 13th Street, between Third and Fourth Avenues. Built in 1903-04, the handsome structure is one of the last remaining buildings in New York City that was erected for staging horse auctions. Designed by the New York architects Jardine, Kent & Jardine, the fifty-foot- wide red brick facade terminates in a rounded cornice, echoing the shape of the central window. Enlivened by four bull’s eye windows and limestone trim, the apex frames a projecting limestone element that originally supported a flagpole.

Four people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of the Penn Club, University of Pennsylvania, New York Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, and Historic Districts Council. It was one of the first high-rise clubhouse buildings in the city, with over half the floors devoted to bachelor apartments, during the era when bachelor apartment hotels were a necessity in the vicinity.

    Second Generation William Thomas Robinson 1837-1920 William Thomas Robinson, first child of John H. Robinson and Elizabeth Sheridan, was born 16 Jun 1837 in New Orleans, Louisiana.1 2 3 His birth day is recorded as 15 Jun 1837 in Pauline Bremond Robinson’s family bible, but most records, including a family tree written by William’s son,4 indicate the birth date as 16 June. As a young child, he moved with his family to Little Rock, Arkansas and then to Austin, Texas in 1855. When he was 15, he was sent to northern cities to attend school. He spent nine years at a boarding school in Cincinnati, Ohio5 and then went to New York City.6 He returned to Texas and in 1860 he worked with his father in the dry goods business in Austin. On 23 Jun 1862 William joined the ranks of the confederacy with the Thirteenth Texas Volunteers, Company C as a private. This regiment was known at Bates’ Regiment. He joined on 23 Jun 1862 in Austin, Texas and was mustered in on 30 Jun 1862 in Velasco, Texas.7 William’s two brothers, John H. and Alfred H. Robinson were in the same regiment. In 1861, Col. Joseph Bates raised the 13th Texas Volunteer Regiment in Galveston and Brazoria County with headquarters in Velasco, Texas. The 13th Texas Volunteers included two companies of cavalry, two companies of artillery and six infantry companies. It was not unusual for Texas regiments, particularly those assigned to coastal defense, to include artillery and cavalry companies. The regiment was assigned coastal duty between Galveston and Matagorda during most of the war.

It focuses on the lives and experiences of the Franck family from the 1750s, when Rufus Franck served in the French and Indian War, until the 1820s, when his younger son, Ben Franck, settled in Nova Scotia. At each step of the story, this study analyzes the communities of free people of color with whom the Franck brothers interacted. In doing so, this project challenges traditional narratives and stereotypes of African Americans during the Colonial and Revolutionary Eras. The Franck brothers’ individual histories, closely analyzed, have the power to expand the prism through which we view early American people of color, so that we see their reality more sharply in three ways. 1. The establishment of free families of color and communities throughout North America, from the pre-Revolutionary period until postwar America, was limited by social prejudices and legal prohibitions.
