1 “CRAZY PRODUCTS OF A CRAZY MIND”: JOSIAH GILBERT HOLLAND In my opinion, there is a reason why Josiah Gilbert Holland became so very rich and so very famous by writing under the pen name “Timothy Titcomb.” It is due to what I suppose to be the ultimate dark nasty secret about the reading habits of the American public: we don’t like to need to read something more than once. Holland was successful, it seems, because incapable of writing anything that anybody would be willing to glance at a 2d time. Now in the 21st Century we have passed well beyond that point — none of us now read anything by “Timothy Titcomb” even a 1st time. 1. INDEX “TIMOTHY TITCOMB” JOSIAH GILBERT HOLLAND 1819 July 24, Saturday: At Concord, Samuel Whiting of Concord got married with Mary Ormsby of Concord. Josiah Gilbert Holland was born in Belchertown, Massachusetts. The family was poor, although of American pedigree (the claimed ancestors John Holland and Judith Stevens Holland were supposedly members of a church that was organized before sailing from Plymouth in Devonshire, that had emigrated into the wilderness at Dorchester), and at an early age he would work in a factory. He would write the lyrics to the Methodist hymn “There’s a Song in the Air,” and many others. Lynn: Preserving the White Man’s Republic: The Democratic Party and the Transformation of American Conservatism, 1847-1860 (Under the direction of Harry L. Watson) In the late 1840s and 1850s, the American Democratic party redefined itself as “conservative.” Yet Democrats’ preexisting dedication to majoritarian democracy, liberal individualism, and white supremacy had not changed. Democrats believed that “fanatical” reformers, who opposed slavery and advanced the rights of African Americans and women, imperiled the white man’s republic they had crafted in the early 1800s. There were no more abstract notions of freedom to boundlessly unfold; there was only the existing liberty of white men to conserve. Democrats therefore recast democracy, previously a progressive means to expand rights, as a way for local majorities to police racial and gender boundaries. In the process, they reinvigorated American conservatism by placing it on a foundation of majoritarian democracy. Empowering white men to democratically govern all other Americans, Democrats contended, would preserve their prerogatives. With the policy of “popular sovereignty,” for instance, Democrats left slavery’s expansion to territorial settlers’ democratic decision-making. -

j. g. holland and the 'religion of civilization' in mid-nineteenth century america robert j. scholnick On May 20, 1888 Walt Whitman, in conversation with Horace Traubel, recalled one of the most hurtful experiences of his literary career, a rejection letter from Dr. Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881), the powerful editor of Scribner's Monthly. Sometime after moving to Camden following his stroke in 1873, Whitman was visited by his old friend John Swinton, an editorial associate of Charles Dana on the New York Sun, who, the poet recounted, urged me to offer something to Dr. Holland ... I demurred but John persisted. 'Do it, do it!' he said. 'Why should I do it?—Why?' I asked John. He still insisted. 'For certain reasons,' he said. I sent a poem, which was rejected—not rejected mildly, noncommittedly, in the customary way, but with a note of the most offensive character. I was sick and blue at the time: the note provoked me: I threw it into the fire. I was always sorry I destroyed it: had I been well I should not have done so: it was a good specimen insult for the historian.1 One can only speculate on Swinton's motives in encouraging the unarmed Whitman to enter the lion's den. Holland's moralistic Scribner's was rapidly becoming the most popular magazine of the American middle class, and no doubt Whitman realized that, as a writer with a reputation for unchastity, his chances of acceptance at the magazine were remote indeed. Landmarks Preservation Commission May 15, 2012; Designation List 38 LP-2205 VAN TASSELL & KEARNEY AUCTION MART, 126-128 East 13th Street, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1903-4; Jardine, Kent & Jardine, architects Landmark Site: Block 558, Lot 43, in part, consisting of the property on which the 1903-04 structure is located On September 7, 2006 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Van Tassell & Kearney Auction Mart and the proposed designation of the related Landmark site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Twenty-four people spoke in support of designation, including Council member Rosie Mendez and representatives of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Tom Duane, State Assembly member Deborah Glick, the Union Square Community Coalition, the Municipal Art Society, the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, the Society for the Architecture of the City, the Historic Districts Council, Landmark West! and the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Summary The former Van Tassell & Kearney auction mart is a three-story Beaux-Arts style building on the south side of East 13th Street, between Third and Fourth Avenues. Built in 1903-04, the handsome structure is one of the last remaining buildings in New York City that was erected for staging horse auctions. Designed by the New York architects Jardine, Kent & Jardine, the fifty-foot- wide red brick facade terminates in a rounded cornice, echoing the shape of the central window. Enlivened by four bull’s eye windows and limestone trim, the apex frames a projecting limestone element that originally supported a flagpole. -

Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1259, Lot 54 On November 17, 2009, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the (former) Yale Club of New York City Building (now Penn Club of New York) and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.1). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Four people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of the Penn Club, University of Pennsylvania, New York Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, and Historic Districts Council. Summary The former Yale Club of New York City Building is located along “clubhouse row,” West 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, its neighbors including the Harvard Club, New York Yacht Club, Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and former City Club. This Beaux-Arts style building, constructed in 1900-01 by builder Marc Eidlitz & Son, was designed by [Evarts] Tracy & [Egerton] Swartwout, both Yale University graduates, Yale Club members, and former employees of McKim, Mead & White. It was one of the first high-rise clubhouse buildings in the city, with over half the floors devoted to bachelor apartments, during the era when bachelor apartment hotels were a necessity in the vicinity. -

Second Generation William Thomas Robinson 1837-1920 William Thomas Robinson, first child of John H. Robinson and Elizabeth Sheridan, was born 16 Jun 1837 in New Orleans, Louisiana.1 2 3 His birth day is recorded as 15 Jun 1837 in Pauline Bremond Robinson’s family bible, but most records, including a family tree written by William’s son,4 indicate the birth date as 16 June. As a young child, he moved with his family to Little Rock, Arkansas and then to Austin, Texas in 1855. When he was 15, he was sent to northern cities to attend school. He spent nine years at a boarding school in Cincinnati, Ohio5 and then went to New York City.6 He returned to Texas and in 1860 he worked with his father in the dry goods business in Austin. On 23 Jun 1862 William joined the ranks of the confederacy with the Thirteenth Texas Volunteers, Company C as a private. This regiment was known at Bates’ Regiment. He joined on 23 Jun 1862 in Austin, Texas and was mustered in on 30 Jun 1862 in Velasco, Texas.7 William’s two brothers, John H. and Alfred H. Robinson were in the same regiment. In 1861, Col. Joseph Bates raised the 13th Texas Volunteer Regiment in Galveston and Brazoria County with headquarters in Velasco, Texas. The 13th Texas Volunteers included two companies of cavalry, two companies of artillery and six infantry companies. It was not unusual for Texas regiments, particularly those assigned to coastal defense, to include artillery and cavalry companies. The regiment was assigned coastal duty between Galveston and Matagorda during most of the war. -

It focuses on the lives and experiences of the Franck family from the 1750s, when Rufus Franck served in the French and Indian War, until the 1820s, when his younger son, Ben Franck, settled in Nova Scotia. At each step of the story, this study analyzes the communities of free people of color with whom the Franck brothers interacted. In doing so, this project challenges traditional narratives and stereotypes of African Americans during the Colonial and Revolutionary Eras. The Franck brothers’ individual histories, closely analyzed, have the power to expand the prism through which we view early American people of color, so that we see their reality more sharply in three ways. 1. The establishment of free families of color and communities throughout North America, from the pre-Revolutionary period until postwar America, was limited by social prejudices and legal prohibitions.
