Abstract This study provides a systematic cost-benefit analysis of a community-based disaster risk management project led by Practical Action in two districts of Nepal over the period 2007 to 2010. Under cautious assumptions about the long-term impacts of the project initiatives, the overall benefit-cost ratio ranges from 1.13 to 1.45, while under moderately optimistic assumptions the estimated benefit- cost ratio is up to 2.04. The internal rate of return of the project is between 22.2 and 26.3 percent. These findings indicate that the livelihood-centred approach to disaster risk reduction adopted in this project has resulted in a significant net contribution to the economic welfare of the target communities and delivered value for money. -

Bharatpur – Bardghat 220 kV T/L Project SIA Report CHAPTER-1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is constructing a 220 kV transmission line from Bharatpur to Bardaghat in Nepal to strengthen the power transmission network of Integrated Nepal Power System (INPS), thereby increasing the capacity of power flow from the west where the major generating stations exist or planned to the east where the demand is high. The line particularly enhances the existing Bharatpur-Bardghat sector which is of single circuit configuration only and has been constructed with limited capacity in early seventies when the power system was in nascent stage. This will also help enhance the power exchange with India. The proposed alignment passes through Bharatpur Municipality of Chitwan district and 14 VDCs of Nawalparasi district. The estimated length of the transmission line is 73.5 Km. Right of Way (RoW) of the transmission line is 30m (15m on each side of centerline) and each tower will require an average area of 12.5mx12.5 m. A total of 0.673 ha private land will be acquired by the project for the placement of 43 towers. The SIA has been prepared in compliance with GoN legislation, The World Bank policies, guidelines and best practices. The Bank policies emphasize the need to avoid or minimize involuntary resettlement on development projects. This SIA of Bharatpur- Bardghat 220 kV Transmission Line Project has been prepared based on the review of available literatures, collection of the secondary VDC level data, findings of household survey of affected households and inventory of affected private and public assets. -

No.: Kathmandu, Nepal Foreword Nepal has made significant progress in achieving good results in school enrolment by having more children in school over the past decade, in spite of the unstable situation in the country. However, there are still many challenges related to equity when the net enrolment data are disaggregated at the district and school level, which are crucial and cannot be generalized. As per Flash Monitoring Report 2014- 15, the net enrolment rate for girls is high in primary school at 93.6%, it is 59.5% in lower secondary school, 42.5% in secondary school and only 8.1% in higher secondary school, which show that fewer girls complete the full cycle of education. -

Thapa2 1Regional Agriculture Research Station, Tarahara, Sunsari, Nepal 2Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal ABSTRACT Adoption of improved beekeeping practices was compared between the mobilized (Pragatinagar VDC) and non-mobilized (Makar VDC) farmers’ groups (n = 14 in each VDC) of Nawalparasi district using semi- structured questionnaire survey after introducing improved beekeeping practices during 2002/2003. Majority of the households (82.4%) from mobilized group practiced beekeeping enterprise of which 80.6% followed improved practices with adoption index of 77.44% while from non-mobilized group only 56.0% adopted beekeeping enterprise and 68.4% followed improved beekeeping practices only with the adoption index of 58.73%. Annual honey yield per colony was significantly higher among mobilized farmers’ group (25.6 kg earning NRs 25,657.14) than that of non-mobilized farmers’ group (15.6 kg earning NRs 10,364.29). Women involvement was low in enterprise development and adoption in both VDCs (31.8% and 50.0% in mobilized VDC; and 35.7% and 48.2% in non-mobilized VDC). Therefore, transfer of improved technology to subsistence farmers emphasizing women through social mobilization could help generate income and alleviate poverty.
