Souls of Black Folk Review
BOOK REVIEW SAMPLE Step 1 The Souls Of Black Folk, W.E.B. Du Bois. Du Bois wrote this book in order to show readers the striving in the souls of black people. He wants readers to feel the pain, achievements, and losses of blacks. “Will America be poorer if she replace her brutal dyspeptic blundering with light-hearted but determined negro humility?” Step 2 The theme of the book is the division of blacks and whites, similar to a sociological study. It describes the history of blacks through slavery, abolition, share cropping, education, and politics. Du Bois introduces his theory of “the negro problem”, which boils down to “What does America do with all of these newly freed black people?” The book also touches down on double consciousness, which is looking at things from black and American views at the same time. Throughout history, humans have always tried to find ways to be better than each other. Race is a perfect example, because it is not a real thing, it was created by society. Race just creates a hierarchy, where usually the people with more European features are viewed higher than all other races. Step 3 Du Bois does a great job of describing things in detail. He can pull you into a story and make you feel the pain and confusion of others. He is not afraid of showing others true emotions and tragedies, which is needed in order to get society to see the truth. He talks of people who look content, but aren’t truly happy because they don’t have much hope. -

03/05/2017 Double Consciousness (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy Double Consciousness First published Mon Mar 21, 2016 Doubleconsciousness is a concept in social philosophy referring, originally, to a source of inward “twoness” putatively experienced by AfricanAmericans because of their racialized oppression and disvaluation in a whitedominated society. The concept is often associated with William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, who introduced the term into social and political thought, famously, in his groundbreaking The Souls of Black Folk (1903). Its source has been traced back from there, by recent writers, to the development of clinical psychology in the nineteenthcentury North Atlantic, and to trends in idealist philosophies of self—to the transcendentalism of Ralph Waldo Emerson and G.W.F. Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. It is thus indirectly related to other nineteenth and twentiethcentury riffs on Hegelian themes, such as false consciousness and bad faith. In our day it continues to be used and discussed by numerous commentators— philosophical and otherwise—on racialized cultures, societies, and literatures, by cultural and literary theorists, and by students and investigators of Africana Philosophy. Recent philosophical debates center on the significance of the concept for Du Bois’s thought overall, its theoretical coherence, and its relevance for current social conditions. 1. “Two Warring Ideals”: Double Consciousness and Masculinity From
“TWO WARRING IDEALS”: DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS AND MASCULINITY FROM EMERSON TO DUBOIS by DEBORAH MANSON (Under the Direction of Richard Menke) ABSTRACT During the second half of the nineteenth century in both America and Britain, psychical phenomena such as mesmeric trances, spirit possession, and double consciousness were prominent in the case studies of physicians and psychologists and in fictional literary texts. Alternate consciousness was most often a side effect of hysteria, which Victorian physicians and authors associated with women. A number of case studies from this time period, however, suggest that double consciousness was not uncommon in men, and several novels depict such cases. For fictional male characters, the split most often organizes itself around issues of success and failure in the masculine world of social and economic achievement; failure in the public sphere could cause private distress. Mental disease held connotations of weakness and effeminacy, but in these novels double consciousness allows middle-class men to imaginatively separate private mental disease from public hegemonic masculinity. Through double consciousness, Victorian authors represent the tensions between private and public selves and the psychological division that results when a character‟s masculinity is inadequate to social norms. In this dissertation, I examine the intersection between Victorian standards of masculinity, the psychological phenomenon of double consciousness, and narrative representations of consciousness in fictional texts by Herman Melville, George Eliot, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry James, and W.E.B. DuBois. Double consciousness, hysteria, neurasthenia, and hypochondriasis were all terms used by the medical community, often synonymously, to describe mental diseases, but double consciousness was most easily adopted by authors of fiction because of its dual physiological and metaphorical connotations. -

RAYFORD W.LOGAN Professor of History, Howard University The Historical Aspects of Pan-Africanism A Personal Chronicle The history of Pan-Africanism as a movement to encourage mutual assistance and understanding among the peoples of Africa and of African descent goes back to the beginning of the twentieth century, but it was only after World War I-that calamitous folly of the so-called superior races-that the movement as a whole began to have the ultimate aim of some form of self-government for African peoples. The credit for con- ceiving the idea of the Pan-African Conference that met in London in July, 1900, belongs to H. Sylvester Williams, a young West Indian lawyer. Among his aims were to bring peoples of African descent throughout the world into closer touch with one another and to establish friendlier rela- tions between the Caucasian and African races. That he did not envision self-government or independence in Africa is evident from another of his stated objectives, namely, "to start a movement looking forward to the securing to all African races living in civilized countries their full rights and to promote their business interests." (my italics) It was William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, as Chairman of the Con- ference's Committee on Address to the Nations of the World, who trans- formed Williams's limited conception of Pan-Africanism into a movement for self-government or independence for African peoples. He urged : "Let the British Nation, the first modern champion of Negro freedom, hasten to . give, as soon as practicable, the rights of responsible government to the Black Colonies of Africa and the West Indies." Du Bois said noth- ing about the Spanish and Portuguese colonies, and he did not explicitly demand "responsible government" for the German and French colonies. -

W.E.B. Du Bois's Proto-Afrofuturist Short Fiction: «The Comet»

Du Bois’s Proto-Afrofuturist Short Fiction: «The Comet» Adriano Elia (Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italia) Abstract This article examines W.E.B. Du Bois’s short story «The Comet» in the light of the Afrofutur- ist movement, a transnational and interdisciplinary, theoretical and literary-cultural enterprise that has endeavoured to rethink the history of Black civilisation in order to imagine a different, better, future. A remarkable example of post-apocalyptic, speculative and proto-Afrofuturist short fiction, «The Comet» functions as a fictional counterpart of the influential key concepts – double conscious- ness, the color line and the veil – previously introduced by Du Bois and it also foreshadows further critical issues and tropes that would be developed later, namely Fanon’s psychology of racism and Ellison’s metaphor of invisibility. Moreover, as a proto-Afrofuturist work of fiction, the story prefigures the post-apocalyptic worlds of Samuel R. Delany and Octavia Butler and becomes a parable in which the supernatural element of the toxic comet allows for interesting speculations on the alienation experienced by people of African descent. Du Bois’s short fiction in the light of the Afro- futurist movement, a transnational and interdisciplinary, theoretical and literary-cultural enterprise that has endeavoured to rethink the history of Black civilization in order to imagine a different, better, future. Afrofutur- ism is based upon the unusual connection between the marginality of al- legedly ‘primitive’ people of the African diaspora and modern technology and speculative science fiction.
