  • BIAG News No 33, Winter 2014 Editor: John Coulson
BERKSHIRE INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP BIAG News No 33, Winter 2014 Editor: John Coulson http://www.biag.org.uk READING INDUSTRIES (PART 1) - NOVEMBER 17, 2014. David Cliffe Last year, I gave a talk about industry along the Kennet – which had its origins when BIAG was thinking about running walks round the former industrial sites in Reading for members of the public during Heritage Open Days. I suggested a boat trip along the Kennet, since that was where a lot of the industry was. BIAG wasn’t sure about this rather expensive idea, but I got the Library to finance it, and we ran it three times. The BIAG talk, based on the leaflet I produced to give to the boat trippers, was enthusiastically received, and I was there and then invited back to cover some more of Reading’s industries in 2015. It has been a great pleasure for me to do the research and put the talk together over the summer, and again, the talk was received with great enthusiasm, and I was, to say the least, pleased. I saw that people were scribbling down what I was saying, and offered to send out my lecture notes to anyone who wanted, to spare them the trouble. Then the newsletter editor said he’d like to publish them. And so now, I feel I should explain that this is not a finished article: they’re just the notes I had handy in case I “dried up” during the talk. I tried not to look at them, and to talk to the audience rather than to a piece of paper.

SPACES Awards and President’s Dinner 2019 Table Names Bailey Francis Baily https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Baily Francis Baily (28 April 1774 – 30 August 1844) was an English astronomer, born In Newbury. He is most famous for his observations of "Baily's beads" during an eclipse of the Sun. Baily was also a major figure in the early history of the Royal Astronomical Society, as one of the founders and president four times. Blagrave John Blagrave https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Blagrave John Blagrave of Reading (d. 1611) was an English Tudor mathematician, astronomer and designer of astronomical and mathematical instruments. His astrolabe designs, which he described in his writings, were advanced for Britain. He devoted himself to mathematical study and was called, by Anthony à Wood, "the flower of mathematicians of his age". Brunel Isambard Kingdom Brunel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isambard_Kingdom_Brunel Isambard Kingdom Brunel FRS (9 April 1806 – 15 September 1859), was an English mechanical and civil engineer who is considered "one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history". He designed an unusual station plan for Reading and several other stations on the line. As Reading at that time was only to the south of the station, he decided that both trains to London and to Bristol would stop on the side nearest the town. This meant that London bound trains had to cross the path of Bristol ones twice to stop at the station, but did mean that passengers did not have to cross the line as there was only one platform.

BLAGG, F.S.A. HonDon : Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., Ltd., 124, Chancery Lane, 1914. PREFACE. The present volume has passed through many vicissi- tudes. The MSS. for the first five Parishes were sent to press as long ago as ist July, 1910, by the late Mr. W. P. W. Phillimore, and at his death on 9th April, 1913, it was found that the \'olume was printed off as far as page 96 but that there was not sufficient MS. in hand to complete it. Some time elapsed before the present co-editor, over- whelmed with the labour involved b}' taking over the Chief Editorship of the entire series, now comprising thirtA^ counties, could give attention to completing this volume, and the work in Berkshire has suffered through the lack of an energetic local Editor, such as have come forw^ard in most of the other counties and contributed so greatly to their success. It is hoped that now the Berkshire Series has again been set going, someone interested in the genea- logy of the County will help in this way and so enable this work to be made as useful as in other counties, in many of which the Marriages of over one hundred Parishes have been printed.

  • Mayors of Newbury Text © Anthony C. Pick Photographs © Newbury Town
Mayors of Newbury Mayors of Newbury “She looked with great admiration at every neat house, and at all the chandler’s shops which they passed.” Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey (1818), Ch. 26 (edited). “The government of towns corporate was altogether in the hands of traders and artificers.” Adam Smith, quoted in K.B. Smellie, A History of Local Government (1963), p.17. This biographical survey of the Mayors of Newbury was prepared with the kind help of many people, including the descendants of former Mayors and the Friends of Newtown Road Cemetery. Assistance from Jane Burrell, David Peacock, Sue Ellis, Brian Sylvester, Judith Thomas, and Phil Wood is gratefully acknowledged. The value of the many reports from the Newbury Weekly News will be evident. Notes by Roy Tubb in his publications have been helpful. The survey reflects the development of English local government and changes in the role of the Mayor in that. The constant factors have been that the Mayor is chief citizen of Newbury, is elected for one year by his/her fellow Councillors, and chairs the Full Council. Initially, the Mayor was Chief Magistrate. The introduction of elections to boroughs in 1835 resulted in the borough being concerned mainly with the improvement and betterment of Newbury, so that each Mayor concerned himself with one or other betterment project. In the 20th century, the magistrate function became the responsibility of statutory magistrates. From 1974, the Mayor became limited to his/her present ceremonial and honorific function. With the establishment of Newbury Town Council in 1997, the functions of the Mayor before 1974 became divided between the elected Mayor, the elected Leader of the Council, and the senior officer with the title Chief Executive Officer.

SHERIFFS, 1694 to 1705 . 456 Index . 457 PREFACE ThiS preSent volume, which embraceS a period from MidSummer, 1694, to Epiphany, 1704- 05, and formS Volume II of the Calendar to the SeSSionS RecordS of the County of Buckingham, iS a continuation of the firSt volume of the series, published in 1933. Although only forty-three SesSionS have been covered, as againSt Sixty-four SeSSionS in the previous volume, the three Quarter SeSSionS BookS which have been calendared—BookS 4, 5, and 6—contain more pages in the original than the first three BookS, and, Starting from Easter, 1700, fifteen bundleS of the Quarter SeSSions RollS have been incorporated. It is obvious that only a Small proportion of the original SeSSions RollS haS been preServed, and it will be seen that they have not alwayS been collected into bundleS in the correct chrono- logical order. In moSt caSeS, the Rolls only confirm or supplement the entries from the SesSionS BookS, but in certain instances they do introduce new matter.
