  • Making Amusement the Vehicle of Instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900
1 ‘Making amusement the vehicle of instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900 PhD Thesis submitted by Lesley Jane Delaney UCL Department of English Literature and Language 2012 SIGNED DECLARATION 2 I, Lesley Jane Delaney confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’.

St. Andrew’s & St. George’s West Church George Street, Edinburgh 2019 AN ATLAS FROM ANTWERP ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Those of us who have the privilege of writing these reports do so as a way of recording the results and the facts along with a little social history, but mainly in order to thank those who helped us; those who gave to the cause; and those who came to the Sale spending generously. Furthermore it is always a particular pleasure for the Sale Convener to have this means of making known the story of the aid we receive from the commercial world, Edinburgh institutions and the officials of the City Council who admirably fulfil their promise to give services to the community. Here follows a list of those to whom we were indebted for their assistance: Billy Kerr, Kerr’s of Edinburgh, Removals and Storage The City of Edinburgh Council Fiona Kelly, Aberdeen Standard Investments Stuart Allan, Bon Papillon Moira Morrison of Bellevue Cash & Carry Jim Rafferty, Bernard Hunter Crane Hire, Gilmerton Alice Crawford, the Clydesdale Bank, George Street Lakeland Bonham’s, The Fine Art Society and The Scottish Gallery Inter Continental Edinburgh The George Sir Boyd Tunnock, Uddingston. Here we would like to mention other friends too, the firms who supply our requirements, all going “the extra mile” to help a charity: DW Cases of Musselburgh where our boxes are made Kevin McCallion of MacSigns, who made our banners Bill Percy of Coldingham, Berwickshire, our stationery supplier for twenty-eight years Graham Neish of Neish Design, who has designed and produced this report and our leaflets, and arranged the display of posters in church for the Sale Port of Leith Housing Association, proprietors of Dalmeny Street pend Prontaprint of Howe Street, Edinburgh.

  • Women in Colonial Commerce 1817-1820: the Window of Understanding Provided by the Bank of New South Wales Ledger and Minute Books
WOMEN IN COLONIAL COMMERCE 1817-1820: THE WINDOW OF UNDERSTANDING PROVIDED BY THE BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES LEDGER AND MINUTE BOOKS Leanne Johns A thesis presented for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the Australian National University, Canberra August 2001 DECLARATION I certify that this thesis is my own work. To the best of my knowledge and belief it does not contain any material previously published or written by another person where due reference is not made in the text. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I acknowledge a huge debt of gratitude to my principal supervisor, Professor Russell Craig, for his inspiration and encouragement throughout the writing of this thesis. He gave insightful and expert advice, reassurance when I needed it most, and above all, never lost faith in me. Few supervisors can have been so generous with their time and so unfailing in their support. I also thank sincerely Professor Simon Ville and Dr. Sarah Jenkins for their measured and sage advice. It always came at the right point in the thesis and often helped me through a difficult patch. Westpac Historical Services archivists were extremely positive and supportive of my task. I am grateful to them for the assistance they so generously gave and for allowing me to peruse and handle their priceless treasures. This thesis would not have been possible without their cooperation. To my family, who were ever enthusiastic about my project and who always encouraged and championed me, I offer my thanks and my love. Finally, this thesis is dedicated to the thousands of colonial women who endured privations, sufferings and loneliness with indomitable courage.
