  • Incidents in My Life and Ministry
This is a re-creation of the original – see page 2 – and please note that the headings on the contents page 3 are hyperlinks INCIDENTS IN MY LIFE AND MINISTRY BY CANON A. G. HUNTER Some time Vicar of Christ Church, Epsom, Rural Dean of Leatherhead, and Hon. Canon in Winchester Cathedral. PUBLISHED BY BIRCH & WHITTINGTON, 10, STATION ROAD, EPSOM, SURREY. 1935. Price Two Shillings Net. DEDICATION. To my dear old Epsom friends I dedicate this little book. A. G. H. Transcriber’s note This small book (of some 100 octavo pages in the 1935 original) has long been out of print. To provide a more accessible source for local and other historians, the present text has been scanned in from an original held by Epsom & Ewell Borough Council’s local history museum at Bourne Hall, Ewell. While it reflects the typography and layout of the original, it does not – as is obvious from the different page count – purport to be a facsimile. Archer George Hunter (pictured here in about 1908) was born on 12 November 1850. As the title page indicates, he was among other things Vicar of Christ Church, Epsom Common. Appointed in 1881 to succeed the first Vicar, the Revd George Willes (who served from the parish’s foundation in 1876) he led the parish for 30 years until his retirement in 1911 at the age of 60. In 1906, he was appointed as Rural Dean of Leatherhead, alongside (as is usual) his parish duties. Less usually, he continued as Rural Dean – perhaps even more actively – after standing down from the parish, retiring from that in 1925 at the age of 75.

  • Prayer Diary – July-September 2018
Prayer Diary – July-September 2018 This diary has been compiled to help us pray together for one another and our common concerns. It is also available on the diocesan website www.europe.anglican.org, both for downloading and for viewing. This should be updated as new appointments and other changes are announced. A daily prayer update is sent via Twitter on the diocesan account @DioceseinEurope Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a quarter, following this weekly pattern: • Eastern Archdeaconry: Monday, Saturday • Archdeaconry of France: Tuesday, Saturday • Archdeaconry of Gibraltar: Wednesday, Saturday • Italy & Malta Archdeaconry: Friday • Archdeaconry of North West Europe: Thursday • Swiss Archdeaconry: Friday • Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe • Nordic and Baltic Deanery: Monday • Germany: Saturday On Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect us all (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). This will include Diocesan Staff, Churches in Communion and Ecumenical Partners. SUNDAY INTERCESSIONS should, by tradition, include prayer for Bishop Robert and the local Head of State by name. In addition, prayers may also include Bishop David (the Suffragan Bishop) and, among the heads of other states, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the leaders of other countries represented in the congregation. Sources and resources also commended: Anglican Cycle of Prayer www.anglicancommunion.org/resources/cycle-of-prayer/download-the-acp.aspx World Council of Churches http://www.oikoumene.org/en/resources/prayer-cycle (weekly), Porvoo Cycle http://www.porvoocommunion.org/resources/prayer-diary/ (weekly), and Common Worship Lectionary festivals and commemorations (CW, pp 2-17 or https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts.aspx ).

  • A Victorian Curate: a Study of the Life and Career of the Rev. Dr John Hunt
D A Victorian Curate A Study of the Life and Career of the Rev. Dr John Hunt DAVID YEANDLE AVID The Rev. Dr John Hunt (1827-1907) was not a typical clergyman in the Victorian Church of England. He was Sco sh, of lowly birth, and lacking both social Y ICTORIAN URATE EANDLE A V C connec ons and private means. He was also a wi y and fl uent intellectual, whose publica ons stood alongside the most eminent of his peers during a period when theology was being redefi ned in the light of Darwin’s Origin of Species and other radical scien fi c advances. Hunt a racted notoriety and confl ict as well as admira on and respect: he was A V the subject of ar cles in Punch and in the wider press concerning his clandes ne dissec on of a foetus in the crypt of a City church, while his Essay on Pantheism was proscribed by the Roman Catholic Church. He had many skirmishes with incumbents, both evangelical and catholic, and was dismissed from several of his curacies. ICTORIAN This book analyses his career in London and St Ives (Cambs.) through the lens of his autobiographical narra ve, Clergymen Made Scarce (1867). David Yeandle has examined a li le-known copy of the text that includes manuscript annota ons by Eliza Hunt, the wife of the author, which off er unique insight into the many C anonymous and pseudonymous references in the text. • Representative Church Body Library, Dublin MS 581 Collection Of
Representative Church Body Library, Dublin MS 581 Collection of transcriptions, notes, jottings and some correspondence, mostly relating to the early history of the Diocese of Ossory, compiled by the Rev. James Graves (1815- 1886). Also contains items of archaeological and antiquarian interest compiled by him and others. Late nineteenth-century. James Graves was born in Kilkenny in 1815, and became a clergyman in the diocese of Ossory, having graduated from Trinity College. He soon developed an interest in archaeology, and was a founder member of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, established in 1849: 'for the preservation, examination and illustration of ancient monuments of Irish history, manners, customs and arts, especially relating to the country and city of Kilkenny. The society expanded rapidly, and published several volumes on church history, architecture and antiquities, including material relating to St. Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny. In 1869, the society became the Royal Historical and Archaeological Society of Ireland. Graves edited in the Rolls Services: 'A roll of the proceedings of the King's Council in Ireland for a portion of the sixteenth year of the reign of Richard II, A.D. 1392-3' (London, 1877). Graves also prepared a history of the diocese of Ossory, which was never published, but drafts of chapters do feature in his papers (see for example 581/9 below). He was presented with a small living at Inisnag (8 miles from Kilkenny) in 1863, where he died in March 1886. Purchased from Mealy's Auctioneers, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, 1996. 1/ Extract from printed source, with title: 'Facsimiles of the types used in Irish books', showing various symbols and scripts of ancient and old Irish writing, and their meanings.
