The 2019-2020 school year began in Hamiota on September 4th with 115 students enrolled at the elementary school and 156 students registered at the collegiate. 23 staff members work at HCI,18 are employed at HES and 7 bus drivers bringing the students to and from school for a total of 48 jobs in all! Students at both schools have already experienced picture day and a welcome barbecue at the collegiate. The Terry Fox walk will take place September 26 @ 11:30 a.m. beginning at the elementary school; all community members are welcome to join in. A new fundraiser for HCI students this year will be: “Little Caesar Pizza Kits & Quick Freeze Meat”. This October fundraiser will be instead of magazine sales. Anoth- er October happening will be a concert put on by the Westman Youth Choir on October 21 at HCI. Enjoy the school year staff and students!

The Hamiota Class of 69 celebrated their 50 year reunion from August 9 - 11.

Hamiota Lions Club The Hamiota Lions Club has re-organized for the 2019-2020 year. Chase the Ace draws resume on Sept. 6th at Hamiota Hotel, with a jackpot of $463 and 46 cards left in the deck. The Hotel is Family Friendly until 9pm so bring the kids. The club is selling potatoes again, if you would like to purchase a bag contact Lion Dwayne Campbell at 412- 0005 or 764-2744. The Club will be holding a fish fry on Oct.20th at the Community Hall. Prices are $18 for adults, $12 for 9 to 15, and 8 & under free. All proceeds will be going to the Lions Playground Project. SHORT Hamiota / Oakview Seniors Summer has come and gone. Harvest is well underway, make sure you watch out for slow moving and large equipment on the roads when you are out and about enjoying our late summer sunshine. Lilac Lounge had a Fancy Hat luncheon attendance was down but it was still a great event. Some of the seniors had fun with the photo booth. The summer students did an excellent job of arranging, decorating and making props for this event. Thanks Kareena Sims and Brianna Downey. Some seniors from the community also attended the final Clack tour and light lunch wind up. There was a group of seniors from Reston who came on a mystery tour to this event. It made for great fun and conver- sation. A good time was had by all. We would like to thank our summer staff and volunteers for all of their contributions with the various events that were held this summer. It has made all the difference to the enjoyment of our local seniors. Foot clinics are available if you’re in need of foot care. To make an appointment with our wonderful foot nurse Bonnie Crawford call the seniors office at 204-764-2658. Bonnie comes to Hamiota approximately every 6 weeks setting up her work station in Park and Lilac residence. We have mobility aids you might need either for a short time or a long time, please feel free to call, if I have it I will loan it. Check Hamiota Out! The Hamiota and area community groups information and sign up day that was held on Saturday, September 7 from 10:00 - 1:00 demonstrated to everyone in attendance that there are many activities to keep one busy in and around Hamiota. The Hamiota Community Centre was buzzing with 38 organizations present. People came to share and support their interests and passions. There were clubs, music, art, sport, hobbies etc. ex- hibiting and sharing information about what each is all about. The Agricultural Society organized a lunch of beef on a bun, pie and coffee. Having this as an option was beneficial to the people sitting at the tables and for the people visiting. Overall the day was a positive community event that brought people together to gain connections. New people had the chance to “Check Hamiota Out” under one roof. This was wonderful for anyone new to the community but it was also wonderful for everyone to see what there is to get involved in; it was quite amazing to see so many organizations represented. This was organized by the newly formed “Welcoming Committee”! This committee plans to host a similar event next year!

Cornerstone Family Worship Centre A moment for families with Pastor Orland Sheri and I are experiencing the empty nest. I can’t under state the fact that I was not prepared for the emotions experienced when our youngest child moved out. Thankfully we can stay connected with our phones. Emily informed me that she is working with a team in aerospace engineering to build a plane to race in Texas at the end of the school year, and at the same time sent a photo of what she made for supper. Our phones have created a new opportunity for quick communication, but research has shown that they can also be a tool for depersonalized communication, and needless conflict. The adage, ‘think before you speak’, should also apply when we swipe and ‘share.’ The age we live in has been called by culture watchers, the age of outrage. Division, hostility, bullying, intentional misinformation and misdirection abound in our culture and our phones can be used in this. As we equip our children for school with books, crayons, glue and technology, we must also remember to equip them spiritually for the world they live in… a world of outrage. The Bible teaches us how to live peaceably, but rules are not enough. We need a power greater than ourselves to live out these truths in our lives. Jesus made it possible for us to live a life of peace by sending the Holy Spirit to live in everyone who is born again by His Spirit. That means the very Prince of Peace lives in our hearts the moment we receive Jesus as our Savior by faith. This outworking of the Holy Spirit in our lives produces what the Bible calls the fruit of the Spir- it. Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Now which home or school hallway could use more of these? While we equip our kids for the things they need for success, let’s never forget to teach them that Jesus desires to equip them spiritually for the world in which they live. At Cornerstone Family Worship Centre we believe that the Bible is indeed God’s Word and is useful for equipping everyone for successful, joy filled Christian living. Alex first began working in Hamiota when she completed her student massage practicum at the wellness centre. She took her schooling in Winnipeg from Evolve Massage Therapy College and thought it was wonderful getting to work with individuals with different backgrounds. Alex, now 21, graduated in January with a diploma as a registered massage therapist and is working at the Hamiota wellness centre on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the days and evenings. Alex resides in Virden where she was born and raised and is the daughter of Jeff and Margie McConnell. Hamiota Filipino Community Hosted a Successful Basketball Tournament in August The Hamiota Filipino Community organized an excellent Fili- pino Basketball tournament on August 10th and 11th. Both days were busy and began very early in the mornings. The tournament was held at Hamiota Collegiate and had teams visiting from Moosomin, Virden, Souris, Russell, and three teams from Brandon. They had a great turnout and had some fun competition over that weekend.
