Huebsch (1876-1964) span the years 1893-1964. The greater part of the collection consists of letters received and retained copies of Huebsch's replies. The collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Notebooks, and Miscellany. The papers treat the years from 1900 to 1924 when Huebsch published under his own name and the period 1925 to 1964 when he served as vice president and editor with Viking Press. The papers contain numerous letters of Sherwood Anderson, whose American classic, Winesburg, Ohio, was issued by Huebsch in 1919 after having been rejected by all previous publishers. Other writers represented by both sizable and significant groups of correspondence are Van Wyck Books, Theodore Dreiser, Irwin Edman, Lion Feuchtwanger, Rumer Godden, Harold Joseph Laski, D. H. Lawrence, William Ellery Leonard, Roger Martin du Gard, Siegfried Sassoon, Upton Sinclair, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Franz Werfel, Patrick White, and Stefan Zweig. The letters of Zweig trace his descent from the cultural circles of prewar Vienna to his exile in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife took their lives. The papers also reflect Huebsch's work for liberal causes in many fields. Included are manuscripts concerning the Freeman, a liberal weekly that he published from 1920 to 1924, and correspondence with many of its contributors, including Francis Neilson, Albert Jay Nock, Walter Pach, and Bertrand Russell. Numerous manuscripts deal with Huebsch's work for the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations. His efforts to stimulate and modernize the merchandizing of books through a series of seminars and lecturers are reflected in correspondence relating to the National Association of Book Publishers, which he helped establish. The Notebooks series, 1893-1940, beginning with the volume for 1900 contains pasted-in advertisements of books published by Huebsch. They serve as a veritable catalog of his firm's productions. Included in the Miscellany are a few of Huebsch's speeches and articles, intermittent diary entries for the years 1925-1961, some financial papers, and relevant printed matter. Also in the Miscellany are a small number of literary manuscripts by some of Huebsch's most admired authors, notably Franz Werfel and Stefan Zweig, and correspondence addressed to his brother, Daniel A. Huebsh, and his close friend, under whom he studied the violin, Sam Franko. B. W.
