Though we cannot be together on campus, we could not be prouder of the talented and stellar group of rabbis, cantors, educators, scholars, and future lay leaders that JTS sends out today to serve our Jewish communities and the larger world. As lay leaders of this great institution, we never lose sight of the overriding purpose of our commitment to The Jewish Theological Seminary: to do our part in the education and training of the next generation of Jewish leaders. JTS is the preeminent institution of Jewish higher education in North America, creating an environment that is, to quote our mission statement, “pluralist and authentic, traditional and egalitarian.” Today we celebrate the graduates who embody this vision and will carry it forward. You are taking your next steps at a moment of formidable challenges in the world. Yet we firmly believe that your time at JTS has given you the education, the wisdom, and the resilience to meet those challenges and, indeed, to help others meet them. It is our prayer that each of you makes your unique contribution to the Jewish communities wherever you serve, and that in doing so you bring great credit to the reputation that JTS has earned over the more than 130 years of its existence. B’shalom, Alan Levine, Esq. Chair, Board of Trustees, JTS 3 Greetings from the Chancellor דברי הנגיד I salute our graduates, their friends and families, and their teachers on this joyful and auspicious occasion—less joyous, to be sure, than it would have been if we were able to celebrate together, but no less auspicious or significant. At The Jewish Theological Seminary, we are committed to knowledge of the Jewish past that is substantive, intimate, and finely nuanced. When our graduates take our tradition forward to meet present and future challenges, they know it really is authentic Judaism they are carrying forward and not an entirely new path of their own invention. Our shared task—whether as rabbis or cantors, educators or scholars, leaders of today or leaders in training for tomorrow—is to help build and maintain true communities, and to fill those communities with meaning rich and deep enough to live for and live by. JTS is dedicated to training Jewish leaders who share this commitment and possess the passion and skill required to transmit it to a new generation. I believe we have done this well for those marking completion and beginning today. May the strength we have gained together at JTS continue to strengthen us—and the world—when and where our learning, creativity, and commitment are most needed. Arnold M. • The Psychology Externship
The Psychology Externship INTRODUCTION The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) Student Counseling Center Externship provides an opportunity to experience and learn about the growing discipline of university mental health while providing psychotherapy to students in a supportive training environment. The externship is exclusively focused on the outpatient assessment and treatment of college and graduate students. Other weekly activities will include: individual supervision with licensed psychologists, a case conference and didactic seminar, and mental health outreach and prevention workshops. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES Through the externship, externs develop skills in diagnosing and treating the mental health issues of a diverse college-based population. The extern will spend most of their time engaged in direct clinical work. This will include conducting initial diagnostic evaluations and ongoing weekly psychotherapy sessions. Externs are responsible for a caseload of 6-8 students per week and will receive on-site supervision. Externs wishing to see more than 6-8 students are usually easily accommodated. Externs also participate in student walk-in hours where they are trained in conducting brief evaluations and crisis intervention. PSYCHODYNAMIC FOCUS The JTS Counseling Center Psychology Externship provides an opportunity to develop and hone skills in contemporary supportive psychodynamic psychotherapy in the college setting. Weekly psychodynamic supervision, case conference, and readings discussed in the didactic seminar will enhance this learning. OUR STUDENTS The opportunity to work with students engaged in a religious and spiritual journey provides unique learning possibilities to our externs. Many of our students are enrolled in joint programs with either Columbia University or Barnard College. Of equal importance, their learning takes place at the Jewish Theological Seminary where students are training for careers in Jewish education and/or religious leadership positions.
