Legally Blonde the Musical

migod you guys! A group of 40 from HCUK enjoyed a Sunday matinee of ‘Legally Blonde the OMusical’ at the Savoy Theatre on April 25th, followed by a reception with the show’s lyricists/ songwriters Larry O’Keefe (College ‘91) and Nell Benjamin (College ‘93) and several members of the cast and company, including lead actress Sheridan Smith!

The group greatly enjoyed the upbeat and hilarious show, based on the film about a dizzy Californian sorority girl who follows the man of her dreams to Harvard Law School. Along the way, she learns she has the makings of a top criminal defense attorney, acquits a wrongly- accused exercise guru of murder, and finds her true love – all set to the toe-tapping tunes crafted by O’Keefe and Benjamin.

After the show, the HCUK group met up at Sophie’s Steakhouse in Covent Garden and had the opportunity to ask the husband- and-wife songwriting team about their involvement with the show and their future projects, as well as to get pictures and autographs from the friendly and down-to- earth cast. Professor Sir David Williams QC (1930-2009)

he Harvard Club of the UK has lost a long time honorary member and friend, Professor TSir David Williams QC (1930-2009). Sir David and Lady Williams were valiant high-table guests at the annual Harvard Dinner at Emmanuel College, where he had been both a student and, later in his career, Senior Tutor. He was a well known legal scholar and teacher of public law and had a very distinguished career writing extensively on constitutional law and civil liberties with many well regarded legal books. Sir David was first educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen, and was very proud of his Welsh roots. He won a scholarship in History and Law to Emmanuel College and was thereafter a Harkness Fellow at Berkeley and Harvard between 1956 and 1958. He moved to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, from Keble College, Oxford in 1967 and was subsequently promoted to Reader in Public Law 1976-1980, before being appointed Rouse Ball Professor of English Law 1983-1992. He was elected President of Wolfson College, Cambridge 1980-1992, where he and Lady Williams created a very warm and inviting atmosphere, bringing scholars and lawyers from all over the world to Wolfson. In 1989 he was appointed the first full time Vice- Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and remained in that post until 1996. He was knighted in 1991. In 2007 he was appointed as the chancellor of Swansea University. Sir David had been awarded honorary degrees by a dozen institutions, including an honorary LLD from the University of Cambridge. He sadly passed away last autumn due to cancer and both ‘Cambridges’ have lost a very loyal friend. We wish to pass on all our sympathy to Lady Williams and her family. Joan Porter MacIver, Past HCUK President & HCUK co-ordinator of the Harvard Dinner at Emmanuel College
