From providing insightful organizational leadership and stewardship, to building high performance teams, to developing and executing strategic plans, Martyn is well versed in management and leadership theory and practice. He combines intelligence with strength of character and a passion for learning to achieve extraordinary results. Throughout a 20-year academic career, Martyn has been in high demand as a consultant, including a wide and impressive array of projects. Most recently, he has infused his deep understanding of social science and marketing to equip organizations and their stakeholders with the tools necessary to create an exciting envisioned future. His broad based expertise transcends many areas, including marketing principles, cultural studies, international market development, urban and community planning, research methods, monitoring and assessment, organizational behavior, and the marketing of human and information services. An Executive MBA classmate describes Martyn’s acumen this way: “His blend of scholarly discipline and keen business sense give him capabilities rarely found in business leadership. In particular, his depth of understanding of sociological behavior as it relates to consumer motivation qualifies him as one of the most capable marketing analysts in the Mountain West.” Martyn is an accomplished teacher and trainer. Accolades include two tenured professorships and positions in two disciplines (sociology then business/marketing) at distinguished schools. With an exemplary record of teaching effectiveness, research, and professional work (including notable publications, awards, and prizes), Martyn has also earned the respect of his students by moving beyond conventional, standardized education, favoring teaching which applies practical, relevant, action-oriented, team-based problem-solving approaches to learning. A University of Utah student stated, “Professor Kingston was a great asset in my educational experience . He (showed us) how marketing is essential to the business model, teaching in an entrepreneurial manner . He is sharp and savvy to the current state of business.” A leader in healthcare improvement administration at Mass General Hospital describes the impact that Martyn had on him in this way, “As an adviser, he had a wonderful way of challenging me to stretch myself to succeed. To this day, I feel like my professional career has been impacted by his teaching and guidance. I constantly challenge myself and others to find different ways of perceiving issues which often results in identifying solutions that may not have been apparent at the outset. I also take on challenges that--even though they may seem daunting--I have the confidence to tackle knowing that I will always learn more by stretching myself.” M. He started and built numerous (and several high profile) rugby and skiing programs. Those familiar with Martyn’s leadership qualities note that this experience contributes greatly to who he is and speaks well to how he approaches team building and competitive business challenges. Alastair Halliday, a Harvard Rugby Alumni who is now the Senior Associate Director of Planned Giving at Harvard University, had this to say, “Martyn brings a great deal of energy, commitment and intelligence to whatever he tackles, and Harvard owes him a debt of gratitude for his many contributions during his time at the University.” Gus Spanos, another Harvard Rugby Alumnist, and a leading private equity executive writes similarly, “Martyn Kingston was a teaching Fellow at Harvard College while I attended as an undergraduate. He also coached the Harvard Rugby Team and was an inspirational leader and mentor to our group. He led us as underdogs to the attainment of the National Collegiate Rugby Championships my senior year when I played on the first team that won the championship. Martyn was a leader then, both on the field and off the field and earned respect from a rugby team that chose him as their coach. Hard work, integrity, capability, and creativity were always on display for those of us who played under him and who knew him well off the field in the academic environment as well.” Also, Martyn has significant international exposure and works well in diverse organizational settings with different socio- cultural groups. Raised in Europe and having been awarded a distinguished Knox International Fellowship to Harvard University, Martyn is drawn to internationalism. His work includes PhD research in South Africa, several academic appointments overseas teaching and researching comparative society and business, the publication of award winning transnational marketing papers, case work and business analysis, and consulting engagements abroad. He enjoys traveling for business and has visited 28 countries around the world, including case work on major global companies. On a personal note, students, colleagues and clients describe Martyn’s character as warm and genuine, and he truly shows interest and great pride in helping others to succeed. He is generous with his time and is deeply committed to making a difference. As an active volunteer, he gives back to the community as Board Member, Committee Member, Guest Speaker, Panel Member, and Planning Commissioner. In addition to this, Martyn is best known for his creativity and innovation. From his business school teachings to his entrepreneurial activities, to consulting work and coaching, he has the ability to translate his creative and innovative ideas into specific action plans, which inspire others to follow, with characteristically, impressive results. This much is well captured by a recent student of Professor Kingston’s when he wrote, “Martyn is someone I think of when I recognize the creative influences in my life. I had the pleasure of witnessing his creativity, drive, and ingenuity firsthand.” An ex-student who has known Martyn for many years and who has seen him in several roles, comments on the great care and thought with which he conducts his work, “He has a true entrepreneurial spirit. When it comes to business, he doesn’t see boundaries he sees opportunities. Martyn is a hard worker, dedicated to thoroughly looking at all the angles of a problem and thoughtfully creating a solution. On a personal level, he’s been a great resource who has been generous with his time and wisdom. Martyn is a highly educated professional that brings a world of experience to his marketing services and business development models, and I have no doubt that he will be a valuable resource to the businesses he serves.” As a first-generation college-educated son of immigrants to England from Malta, Martyn developed drive and determination second to none. His team work and relationship-building, competitiveness and life-long passion for learning, teaching and sharing clearly set him apart. As an action-oriented “doer,” he has brought great value to different aspects of his professional, community, academic, sporting, coaching, and consulting life. Especially compelling is Martyn’s ability to improve the overall levels of effectiveness, efficiency, engagement, fairness and transparency. Martyn offers a winning combination of credentials, skills, track record, and expertise to propel an organization forward. M. Kingston ▪ 435-640-8754 ▪ [email protected] Page 2 of 2 .
