G U I D E XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SPONSORS

The XTERRA World Championship is presented by Paul Mitchell, Hawaiian Airlines, The Ritz-Carlton, Maui Visitors Bureau and Outrigger Hotels & Resorts. Sponsors include the Kapalua Resort, GU, Gatorade, Zorrel, Kona Brewing Company, Tourism Authority, T S Restaurants, and the XTERRA Alliance - Vitality, Footwear, Fitness, Flex, Wetsuits, and Cycling. WELCOME TO PARADISE - KAPALUA, MAUI! The Hawaiian word Kapalua can loosely be translated to mean “embracing the sea.” Fittingly enough, XTERRA is embracing Kapalua as the new home for the world’s most prestigious off-road .

The 16th annual XTERRA World Championship is crossing the island after 15 glorious years in the Makena/Wailea area. Gone are the calm seas of Makena, the kiawe thorns and sharp lava rocks of Haleakala, and the unforgiving South Maui sun. It’s a whole new world at Kapalua, and the inaugural class of 2011 will usher in a fresh era of big surf, red dirt, and verdant green passages.

The Kapalua Resort is on Maui’s northwest coast and as such its greener, cooler, and more tropical than the south shore. A capacity field of 650 athletes from 28 countries and 42 U.S. states will tackle this new challenge - having competed all season long for the right to dig their toes in the sand at the sports’ ultimate event. In addition to the new course, they’ll be treated to an area of Maui that is considered one of the most picturesque settings in the world with amazing beaches, renowned resorts, world-class restaurants and incredible golf courses. In short, there will be no shortage of sights and activities for XTERRA athletes and their families.

Kapalua is indeed a place worth embracing and even those that can’t make it to Maui can experience the magic, as all the action is being filmed for a one-hour TV special that will be broadcast across the nation starting in mid January 2012. 7 SPECTATORS GUIDE ON HOW TO WATCH THE RACE

Maui’s World Championship XTERRA course covers 27 miles of unyielding terrain. The experience is a sensory riot featuring fragrant breezes, Pacific blue water, bright yellow sun, soft white sand, fine red dirt, and cool green lawns.

Start and Swim: Located at the D.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, there are plenty of great vantage points to watch the mass start from the lawn above or down on the beach. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in white and women in pink. A short beach shuffle mid-race between two 750-meter laps of a triangular course gives spectators a chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.

T1 and T2 - Bike and Run Transition: Located a few yards from the swim start in a big grassy area on the lawn in front of the Ritz. The transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over from any position around the boundary.

Bike: Unfortunately, there’s really no place to watch the bike aside from the first mile out and back as the entire 18-mile single loop course is on private land and not open to the public.

Run: Most of the run course is also on private lands and closed to the public with the exception of a leg-burning section of sand just before the finish line on D.T. Fleming Beach.

Finish: The Ritz-Carlton is the place to be for both transitions, the finish, and live race reports. There’s food booths, the Paul Mitchell cut-a-thon, XTERRA Gear shop, the Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front row seat to one of the greatest spectacles in all of sport - the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of emotion at the finish line.

Follow it live: Friends, Family and fans that are not able to attend the race can get live updates on the internet at www.xterramaui.com starting at 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 5am in Sydney, Australia, 8am in , 4pm in ).

The men’s triathlon gold medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing recently announced he will join more than 70 other professionals at the 16th annual XTERRA World Championship.

"I´m really excited to try the XTERRA format, realizing though, that there are some specialists who are at the top of their game. It will be hard to beat them, as I´m more focused on having fun right now and have only been training when I feel like it," said Frodeno from Kona, HI last week where he was enjoying the Ironman World Championship festivities.

"This could be the first time in years that I haven´t lived according to a schedule but rather gone for the odd spin on the bike, some ocean swims and a jog on the golf course. I've done enough not to be last, but probably not enough to push the guys all the way to the line."

Frodeno, who spent his youth in Cape Town and uses Stellenbosch, South Africa as his off-season base - is no stranger to XTERRA nor two of its biggest stars in Conrad Stoltz and Dan Hugo.

"He went mountain biking with us over this past summer and I can tell you his skill level will not be holding him back at all," said Hugo, who nearly won the XTERRA USA Championship two weeks ago in Utah.

"The last time an Olympic Champion raced Maui he won it ( in 2006) and Frodeno is a very rounded ath- lete and for certain a crown contender."

Hugo also said to keep an eye on another newcomer, Ivan Rana - a three-time Olympian from that was 5th in Beijing and 5th in the inaugural triathlon event in Sydney in 2000.

"Rana is a contender too, if not even more so. His cycling might be strong than Frodeno's."

Nobody has been to more well as American Kelley Cullen who has been top four every XTERRA Championship events XTERRA championship race she entered this year. than the managing director of the XTERRA World Tour - This could be the year of Bubu. She has been unstoppable "Kahuna Dave" Nicholas. in Europe with a third-place in France due to some bike Having been to every World problems as the only blemish to a perfect four-win season. Championship race in Maui Melanie was super strong last month in Utah and if Bubu is since creating the sport back in to win she has to go through the 3-time World Champ 1996, and having been onsite McQuaid to get it. Julie Dibens is simply a superb athlete to see this years races unfold and can win anytime anyplace, but we’ll have to see if she all over the world - the Kahuna can run on that toe that took her out of a brilliant race in is more than qualified to Kona. Regardless, how can you deny anyone who won speculate on who might win it all this year. That doesn't three world champ trophies in a row and came second in mean he'll get it right, in fact, he's hardly ever right (just 3-for-18 in picking winners over the last eight years). So, with a grain of salt, but some tasty insight nonetheless, here are the Kahuna's 2011 Maui prognostications:

It seems the pro triathlon world is as excited as the age groupers to head into an all new Maui experience at Kapalua. The field is unbelievably strong and deep with more than 45 pro men and 25 pro women expected to start.

With 2010 World Champion Shonny Vanlandingham relegated to spectator after her ACL operation, it appears to boil down to Melanie McQuaid, Julie Dibens, Lesley Paterson, Renata Bucher and Marion “Bubu” Lorblanchet. I don’t mean to diss the likes of Carina Wasle, Suzie Snyder, Emma Garrard, or Danelle Kabush as all of them have won races and could easily beat any of my top five picks. The wildcards have to be Czech pro Helena Erbenova who has two podiums in her first season in Europe and Aussie Erin McQuaid Densham, an Olympic triathlete and Oceana champion as

her only other appearance? Lesley Paterson had her first XTERRA championship win this year in Santa Cruz and Lorblanchet may be better suited to Kapalua than Makena. If she gets into T2 within three minutes of the leader she truly has the ability to make up that much time on the run. Renata has not had one of her best years, but she has taken some time off in Europe and is reported happy and rested and ready to come claim her World Crown.

Bubu can swim almost as well as Julie. Mel will have to chase both women coming out of T1 and it is simply a function of if she can pace herself over the course of nearly two hours on the bike. 18 “KAHUNA DAVE’S” PRO RACE PREVIEW

No stranger to a mountain bike and a mate of Conrad and Hugo. Jan is a threat.

In the end it always boils down to who has “IT” on the day. There will not be the flat tire or bike carnage on this course as in Makena. The trails are much more forgiving and mechanicals will not play so important a factor. For the women I have to go with the threesome, in no particular order, of Dibens, Lorblanchet and McQuaid. My pick for the upset is Lesley Paterson.

The men’s field is more difficult because we don’t know Armstrong what to expect from Lance and Frodeno. Stoltz, Lebrun, and Llanos have a combined eight world championships. Marceau, Weiss and Middaugh all have experience on Maui that should help – but we can’t forget there is no experience When it comes to the men we must look to the “Caveman” for this new course. Hugo is strong, Dietz can win on any Conrad Stoltz. With four XTERRA World Championship given day and so can Morales; and those two supermen of titles and more wins than any other XTERRA athlete in Armstrong and Frodeno make it darn near impossible history one can never dismiss him as the favorite, but what a field of stellar athletes are coming to try and take him I see Dan Hugo as finally breaking through and winning the down. European champ Olivier Marceau is always Big One. Stoltz, Llanos, Weiss, Lebrun, Armstrong, powerful on Maui despite never grabbing the top spot, Middaugh , Marceau, Dietz and Morales will chase all day Eneko Llanos has three XTERRA world titles and has and not be separated by more than a few minutes into T2. proven he can race Kona and come to Maui and win. The After that, the man with the most left in his legs to go up the “Professor” Nico Lebrun beat everyone up in Utah and hills at the start of the run and enough balance to handle the chased Marceau in Switzerland for his last two finishes. final downhill onto the beach will take the other podium Nico is always at his best in September and October. steps. That’s my top 10. Austrian Michi Wiess returns after a great 70.3 and Ironman season, Victor Morales, who won France, is coming along with Marcel Zamora - a 5 time IM France champion. Now throw in the fabulous Dan Hugo who is so due for the big Hugo win, Josiah Middaugh who has only bad luck holding him back from a Maui win, German Ronny Dietz who has Euro victories and chased Marceau down to the last few miles in Switzerland for the season crown, Tim DeBoom who got his XTERRA feet wet in Utah, Branden Rakita who was only 40+ seconds back of some newcomer named Lance in Utah and you have a field with anyone of 10 guys who could win.

Oh dear, did I say Lance? We were thrilled to have this generation’s best endurance athlete race with us in Utah. And “The Man” did not disappoint. Will he be back to face this horde of performers? All signs say yes he will. This field is arguably tougher than any he faced in The Tour and he will only have 2.5 hours to defeat them rather than 28 days. To augment all of these names we must include 2008 Peking Olympic Gold Medalist from Germany, Jan Frodeno. 19 CONRAD “The Caveman” STOLTZ Stellenbosch, South Africa 2010 & 4-time XTERRA World Champ Conrad 9-time XTERRA U.S. Pro Series Champ 2011 ITU Worlds & XTERRA Japan Champ

This year, on the eve of the XTERRA World Championship another XTERRA legend will be honored at the night of champions dinner. Past recipients are... NED OVEREND (2005) After retiring from mountain biking in 1996 at the age of 40 (he won six national titles and became mountain bikings first world champion in 1990), Overend competed in the first-ever XTERRA in 1996, finishing third. In ‘97 he was second, and in ‘98 and ‘99 he won consecutive World Championships at the ripe young age of 42 & 43. He was also the XTERRA USA Series Champion in 2002. At the 2004 World Championship, at age 50, Overend posted the 9th fastest bike split and placed 21st overall. Midway through the bike course Peter Reid was overheard saying “There’s a 50-year-old in front of me!” He was so devastating on the mountain bike that he earned the nicknames of “Deadly Nedly” and “The Lung.” At the end of his career, commentators respectfully called him “The Old Man of the Mountain.”

SCOTT TINLEY (2006) In 1996, Scott competed in XTERRA's inaugural event, known as Aquaterra at the time. That day, he finished in 4th place and went on to finish in the top 10 in both 1997 and '98. But more than just an athlete, Scott was one of the early ambassadors for the sport. Tinley was at the sharp end of getting athletes to Maui. When you look at the high level pro's that came 10 years ago, it is far more impressive than what one, solitary, unusual race with a $5,000 prize list should have attracted. Jimmy Riccitello, Mike Pigg, Wes Hobson, Ray Browning, Pat Brown, , Emilio Desoto, Jeff Devlin, Kenny Glah, Paul Huddle, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby, Sian Welch, Karen Smeyers and more. A lot of that participation is because of ST, who helped found and develop the sport of off-road triathlon.

KERSTIN WEULE (2007) Kerstin Weule, using equally deadly swim, mountain bike and run speed, won more XTERRA races than anyone (until Jamie Whitmore took on the challenge). She won 19 XTERRA titles, including the US. Pro Series in 1999 and 2000, and the 2000 World Championship. Born in Braunlage, Germany in 1966, Weule’s name was synonymous with XTERRA for years. The winning started in 1998 in Louisiana and she won the next two big races. In her career, Kerstin won at almost every U.S. venue where XTERRA traveled too, including races in the UK and Canada. Weule brought much to XTERRA – an open disposition, the ability to share all that she knew at XTERRA University clinics, a great laugh, her cartwheel at the finish line, & blue painted toenails on raceday.

JIMMY RICCITELLO (2008) Flash back to 1996… AquaTerra…the first XTERRA…123 Speedo-clad racers on the start line at dawn on the beach in Wailea, Maui. A who’s who of triathlon and mountain biking showed up to try something completely new…off-road triathlon. And, it turned out that XTERRA with its catch phrase “Your toughest competitor is Mother Nature” was right up Riccitello’s alley. He took the inaugural XTERRA World Championship by more than three minutes over triathlon great Mike Pigg. After the win, he said “Man this race is a bitch, but it’s the true spirit of triathlon – the athlete against the course”. Over seven years Riccitello raced XTERRA all over the U.S., including six more Maui World Championships, and was always the life of the party.

MICHAEL TOBIN (2009) Tobin won at everything he tried, posting championships in running (and not your usual 5K but running up mountains for a couple hours); duathlon, where he was Powerman Champ twice with 14 international victories; XTERRA with 16 victories and a World Championship; and adventure racing – where he has won all over the world. Tobin dominat- ed XTERRA for years. He won Kirkwood in 1997; won 3 of 4 in 1998; and won 9 out of 10 in 1999. To that point, the one prize that eluded Tobin was Maui. He was 4th in 1997 – 3rd in 1998 – 2nd in 1999 and finally won it all in 2000. He’s the last American to win off-road triathlon’s greatest race. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SHARI KAIN (2010) Shari Kain came to XTERRA as an accomplished mountain biker – a U.S. champion in both cycling and cyclocross and she was to have a major impact on XTERRA. Kain had an epic duel with Michellie Jones in the inaugural XTERRA of 1996 but came up 12 seconds short. In 1999 “Sharoo” won it all in style by doing the hula across the finish line in a grass skirt. That fabulous finish wasn’t Shari’s only contribution to the XTERRA Legend that day. It is said she is responsible for the post-race game of naked touch football - a hallmark of the early days of XTERRA 59

Lightweight XTERRA Shoes Designed to Help Athletes Stalk Their On-Course Prey

TJ Gray — designer of XTERRA’s new line of footwear — stood at the finish line of the XTERRA World Championship in Maui in October 2008. At the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one- off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined to become a lifestylea movement.

And look at what XTERRA has become

- From that one race in 1996 to 100+ in 15 countries in a 15-year span including a 70-stop America Tour for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found on nearly every continent in the world.

- XTERRA initiated a series of camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out more than a quarter-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garner the attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize close to 200 amateur regional champions and 24 amateur national champions, plus XTERRA Trail Run Series, National and World Champs..

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV and XTERRA.TV. Dozens of adventure themed shows reach into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places. Our very own 24/7 web TV network, www.xterra.tv, allows viewers to watch our shows on demand for free.

- We became consumer friendly with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition.

- With the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids and opportunities and hope for those in need.

- We've opened the doors for runners with the XTERRA Trail Running Series. This year there are more than 60 5km, 10km, and 21km runs reaching into 15 U.S. States and several countries - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- We launched the XTERRA Eco Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the communities that host us.

- XTERRA brand licensees have introduced bicycling accessories and XTERRA exercise equipment, XTERRA footwear is widely available with revolutionary designed trail runners, and XTERRA Wetsuits continues to increase its market share of the wetsuit category.

- We created our very own quarterly magazine, The XTERRA Planet, to keep our membership connected and show- case the amazing athletes and photography we’ve collected through the years.

- And, XTERRA is just 15 years old...
