It is well known that athletes from a specific region or country are dominating certain sports disciplines such as marathon running or Ironman triathlon; however, little relevant information exists on cross-country skiing. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the aspect of region and nationality in one of the largest cross-country skiing marathons in Europe, the “Engadin Ski Marathon.” All athletes ( = 197,125) who finished the “Engadin Ski Marathon” between 1998 and 2016 were considered. More than two-thirds of the finishers (72.5% in women and 69.6% in men) were Swiss skiers, followed by German, Italian, and French athletes in both sexes. Most of the Swiss finishers were from Canton of Zurich (20.5%), Grisons (19.2%), and Berne (10.3%).

2 0 1 1 P R E S S G U I D E XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SPONSORS The XTERRA World Championship is presented by Paul Mitchell, Hawaiian Airlines, The Ritz-Carlton, Maui Visitors Bureau and Outrigger Hotels & Resorts. Sponsors include the Kapalua Resort, GU, Gatorade, Zorrel, Kona Brewing Company, Hawaii Tourism Authority, T S Restaurants, and the XTERRA Alliance - Vitality, Footwear, Fitness, Flex, Wetsuits, and Cycling. WELCOME TO PARADISE - KAPALUA, MAUI! The Hawaiian word Kapalua can loosely be translated to mean “embracing the sea.” Fittingly enough, XTERRA is embracing Kapalua as the new home for the world’s most prestigious off-road triathlon. The 16th annual XTERRA World Championship is crossing the island after 15 glorious years in the Makena/Wailea area. Gone are the calm seas of Makena, the kiawe thorns and sharp lava rocks of Haleakala, and the unforgiving South Maui sun. It’s a whole new world at Kapalua, and the inaugural class of 2011 will usher in a fresh era of big surf, red dirt, and verdant green passages. The Kapalua Resort is on Maui’s northwest coast and as such its greener, cooler, and more tropical than the south shore. A capacity field of 650 athletes from 28 countries and 42 U.S. states will tackle this new challenge - having competed all season long for the right to dig their toes in the sand at the sports’ ultimate event. In addition to the new course, they’ll be treated to an area of Maui that is considered one of the most picturesque settings in the world with amazing beaches, renowned resorts, world-class restaurants and incredible golf courses.

Although participants are generally fit and presumably healthy, there is measurable morbidity and mortality associated with participation. In triathlon, most deaths occur during the swim leg, and more insight into risk factors, such as hypothermia, is warranted. In this study, we measured the core temperature of 51 participants who ingested temperature sensor capsules before the swim leg of a full-distance triathlon. The water temperature was 14.4–16.4 ◦C, and the subjects wore wetsuits. One subject with a low body mass index and a long swim time experienced hypothermia (<35 ◦C). Among the remaining subjects, we found no association between core temperature and swim time, body mass index, or sex. To conclude, the present study indicates that during the swim leg of a full-distance ◦ Citation: Høiseth, L.Ø.; Melau, J.; triathlon in water temperatures ≈ 15–16 C, subjects with a low body mass index and long swim Bonnevie-Svendsen, M.; Nyborg, C.; times may be at risk of hypothermia even when wearing wetsuits.

The aim of the present study was to review the role of nationality on cross-country skiing and ultra-endurance running. Scopus and PubMed were searched using the syntax “nationality AND (ultra-endurance OR ultra-marathon OR cross-country skiing) in 1/4/2020. This search identified 17 articles, whose references were further examined for relevant literature. It was observed that Russian athletes dominated ultra-endurance running and cross-country skiing races. It was shown that these races were in other countries, where it was assumed that only the best Russians competed. Potential explanations could be misuse of performance enhancing substances, historical, climate-geographical and psychophysiological (e.g., combination of genetic and social factors).
