As she prepares to race in Sunday’s Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast, Caroline has revealed she is more confident than ever just weeks out from another Ironman World Championship appearance. “I’m actually ready in the head to win,” she said. Twenty-year-old Gemma suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and spastic quadriplegia, but she will be at the start line of next Sunday’s half-Ironman distance triathlon at Mooloolaba. She will compete with the help of her parents Phil and Sam. In the swim Gemma will be towed in a small dinghy by Sam. Phil will then ride using a specially designed bike and the pair will then share duties pushing her in a wheelchair over the half marathon. The family’s triathlon journey began in early 2011 after an email landed in Phil’s inbox. That email contained a video, which featured father and son combination Dick and Rick Hoyt. In 1989, Team Hoyt tackled the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii for the first time. Dick pulled, pedalled and pushed his disabled son Rick through the course in 14:26:08. In 2008, they were inducted to the Ironman Hall of Fame. “In 2011, when Gemma was in Grade 12, we found out that the school participated in the Noosa Special Triathlon, so we made a mighty push to have Gemma included,” Mr Weinheimer said. This event was the start of something big for Team Gemm. After that race, the family, who live in Maryborough, were invited to participate as Team Gemm with the Hervey Bay Triathlon Club. Since that day, they have completed 30 different events, ranging from to open-water swims and the odd fun run. “Every race Gemma participates in, she has an enormous smile on her face,” Sam, Phil and Gemma Weinheimer are preparing for their first half-Ironmanm which will be at Mr Weinheimer said. AS THOSE who ran in the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival on the weekend will know, running on bitumen is quite unforgiving on the legs. Last Friday, the mother of two from Kings Beach became the first woman to complete the Birdsville Track run from Marree, South Australia, to Birdsville, Queensland. Ms Skews completed the course in seven days and four hours, via the inside track and original Birdsville track. A few days after putting up her sore, blistered feet and taking a much-needed deep breath, Ms Skews was still emotionally drained. “It was hard, long, hot,” she said. “I wasn’t really expecting anything, I didn’t have anything to go by, I knew there were going to be factors I couldn’t train for and I handled what came my way. “Physically, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Going into the gruelling event, Ms Skews said she thought it would be seven days of self-discovery, “but it was hell to be quite honest”.
