5 SPECTATORS GUIDE ON HOW TO WATCH THE RACE

Maui’s World Championship XTERRA course is a classic and covers 27 miles of unyielding terrain. The experience is a sensory riot – crystal clear Pacific waters, fragrant breezes, bright sun, fine volcanic dust, needle-like kiawe thorns, soft white sand, cool green lawns, and lava rock of every shape, color, and size.

Start and Swim: Located at the beach fronting the Makena Beach & Golf Resort, there are plenty of great vantage points to watch the mass start from the lawn above. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in blue and women in pink. A short beach shuffle mid-race between two 750-meter laps of a triangular course gives spectators a chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.

T1 and T2 - Bike and Run Transition: Located a few yards from the swim start in a big grassy area at the lobby level of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. The transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over from any position around the boundary.

Bike: The bike course is not open to the public and cannot be pre-ridden by competitors.

Run: Most of the run course is also on private lands and closed to the public with the exception of a long, leg-burning section of sand at Makena Beach, aka “Big Beach”.

Finish: The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is the place to be for both transitions, the finish, and live race reports. There’s food booths, the Paul Mitchell cut-a-thon, XTERRA Gear shop, the Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front row seat to one of the greatest spectacles in all of sport - the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of emotion at the finish line.

Friends, Family and fans that are not able to attend the race can get live updates on the internet at www.xterramaui.com starting at 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 5am in Sydney, Australia, 8am in New Zealand, 4pm in Brazil).

The Makena Beach & Golf Resort (808-874-1111)

There are few places left in Hawaii where you can stroll along quiet stretches of sand, see waves splash on ancient, storied shores and feel what the Hawaiians call the mana, or spirit of the land. One such place is Makena on Maui's south- western coast, home of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.

The Resort is secluded on 1800 acres, between a perfect crescent beach and the dramatic slopes of Mount Haleakala. A true Aloha experience, the Resort welcomes you with everything you desire for your Hawaiian visit. Sparkling Pacific views from every guest room. A pristine beach. Spectacular golf. Plus oceanside recreation and enticing dining options.

Designed for relaxation, the Resort surrounds an Asian meditation garden with stone paths, waterfalls and streams swimming with brilliant multi-colored carp. You'll feel the serenity from the moment you arrive, when a lei of seashells is draped over your shoulders and you're welcomed with the genuine smiles and warm attention of the staff.

6 QUICK FACTS ON THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

WHAT IS XTERRA: The world’s premier off-road , combining a 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) swim that starts in front of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort a 32-kilometer (20-miles) mountain bike that climbs 3,000 feet up and down the lower slopes of Haleakala, and a 12-kilometer (7.5-miles) trail run that traverses lava rock, forest trails, and beach sand. Top pros finish in roughly two-and-a-half hours.

WHO RACES IN MAUI: A sold-out field of 550 racers including 75 professionals and 450 amateurs representing 30 countries & 32 U.S. states, ages 14 (Hanna Rae Finchamp from Altadena, CA) to 73 (Ron Hill from Hayden, ID).

Earn a slot by qualifying as one of the top finishers in their age group at an XTERRA Championship race in Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Saipan, South Africa, Switzerland and Alabama, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, Utah, and Virginia in the United States. There is also a special Hawaii resident qualifier, the MountainMan, held on Oahu each year, or... 2. Enter through the at large drawing - a limited number of slots are offered on a first-come first-serve basis.

At every major XTERRA championship event Paul Mitchell hosts a charity hair cut-a-thon to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation. This year XTERRA athlete Rich Costello has agreed to let the fate of his 12-month-old beard be a fundraising tool for CAF. He'll either shave it off or keep it after we tally up which side received the largest total donation in the CAF "Shave it or Save it" campaign. If "Shave it" wins, we'll shave the beard at Sunday night's award ceremony. Either way, the winner will be CAF, and we hope to raise more than $5,000 through Rich's beard. You can donate on-site Sunday, 10am - 2pm, or online at xterramaui.com.

9 COURSE DESCRIPTION

Maui’s XTERRA course is legendary, and conditions change radically from year-to-year, diminishing the advantage to repeat competitors and perpetuating the course's stature as the most intimidating in the series. Hawaii’s natural obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth and for the 500+ athletes racing in Maui – the XTERRA World Championship is a truly unique experience. The victor will traverse this rugged terrain in roughly two and half hours (although Conrad Stoltz broke the record by almost two minutes when he crossed in 2:22:55 in 2002), with the lead woman 30-minutes behind. Age groupers must reach the bike/run transition by 1:00pm (race starts at 9am), or their quest for the finish will be cut short. NOTE: Course records mean little as the route has changed through the years. SWIM Distance: 1.5-kilometers (0.93 miles) Location: Maluaka Beach right in front of the host hotel Access: Open to the public The rough water swim is two laps of a 750-meter triangular course, with a 50-yard beach shuffle between laps to get the blood pumping in a totally different direction. The first male & female age groupers out of the water win an XTERRA Vortex 3 full wetsuit.

SWIM RECORD: Gender Name Time Year Male Glenn Wachtel (HI) 18:10 2000 Female Raeleigh Tennant (AUS) 18:31 2000

Swim to Bike (T1), and Bike to Run (T2) Transition Location: Located at the lobby level of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort in a big grassy area Access: The swim/bike transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over from any position around the boundary. MOUNTAIN BIKE Distance: 32 Kilometers (20 miles) Location: The slopes of the mighty Haleakala Volcano Access: Closed to the public

Competitors are not permitted to pre-ride the XTERRA World Championship course. For newcomers, it is read and react. For veterans, the experience might allow them to remember portions but more often than not it instills a solid feeling of respect for the Old Lady of XTERRA.

Every year competitors say, “XYZ course is tougher than Maui”. Every year around noon on Championship Sunday, the look – the eyes pointing down and the head shaking side to side – tells you that there is nothing like Haleakala.

Climbing from sea level to 1,200 feet then down and back up to 1,400 feet with a final portion called “the plunge” of 8- kilometers back to sea level, this track has everything. Full of rock strewn paths, gnarly golf ball sized gravel, short steep and long go forever climbs, hard packed lava, and sometimes, depending on conditions, deep, dusty silt. Over 3,000 total feet of climbing. 10 BIKE RECORD: Gender Name Time Year Male Conrad Stoltz (RSA) 1:24:12 2002 Female Melissa Thomas (USA) 1:41:02 2004 OFF-ROAD RUN Distance: 11 Kilometers (7 miles) Location: South Maui mtb elevation gain table

Out on the run athletes will find all sorts of sand - white, gold, black, salt and pepper, green or garnet. There’s a lot more climbing involved, a spooky forest to navigate, a dozen different surfaces to cross, and just before the finish line some of Hawaii’s most stunning oceanfront scenery.

There is no accounting for the heat generated by gnarly lava fields, making other- wise simple obstacles extremely difficult to conquer. The "Makena Beach Mile" is a grueling slog along soft sand, but a beautiful end run along the ocean-front golf course helps racers forget it all at the finish.

Scottish lass Lesley Paterson is having her finest 1996, and having been onsite to see this years races unfold all over the world - the Kahuna is more than qualified to speculate on who might win it all this year. That doesn't Julie mean he'll get it right, in fact, he's hardly ever right (just 2 for 16 in picking winners over the last eight years). So, with a grain of salt, but some tasty insight nonetheless, here are the Kahuna's 2010 Maui prognostications:

Another fall is here and the triathlon world focuses on Hawaii. The reason I bring this up is in 2009 Eneko Llanos almost did what nobody thought could be done; win Kona and Maui in the same year. He nearly pulled it off with a brilliant stint at the front in Kona and a win on Maui. This year 3-time XTERRA women’s champ Julie Dibens did even more than Llanos at Kona by finishing 3rd and leading until the last few miles of the run. How will she do a few weeks later?

Don’t think for a moment they won’t have competition on Maui. Conrad Stoltz has had another totally dominant year, crushing the field on the definitely Un-Conrad course in Utah. Franky Batelier had a very strong year in Europe, Olivier Marceau is sporting a new beard, won easily in

Eneko year. With her new biking skills keeping her close at T2 and her unbelievably fast running, whoever is in front of her coming onto the run had best be ahead by a comfortable margin or they will see a flashing red suited Paterson going past.

The womens field is deeper than ever. The Maui course is perfectly suited for Dibens. No wetsuit swim, not too tech- 14 “KAHUNA DAVE’S” PRO RACE PREVIEW

As stated, McQuaid is at her peak, Shonny Vanlandingham won everything early but has had time to rest since being crowned US Champ again. Renata Bucher and Marion “bubu” Lorblanchet tied for the Euro crown and Bubu is a fast swimmer who will not give up gobs of time to Dibens. Climbing is what Bucher loves to do and along with petite Austrian Carina Wasle can get to the front of the pack if they can pass the faster swimmers early on the bike course. Throw in Lesley’s fabulous running with Danelle Kabush returning after her second child and the experience of a few 2nd overalls at Maui, mix in Kiwi Jen Smith who is always strong on Maui and there are 9 true impressive winning the Canadian championship. 55 2010 XTERRA EUROPEAN TOUR RESULTS

2010 Recap by “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas - Once the dust had settled at the XTERRA European Tour final stop in Prangins, Switzerland two XTERRA pros from France (le magnifique) stood on top of the European tour pro standings. For their wins, Franky Batelier and Marion (call her “Bubu”) Lorblanchet each earned US$4,000 as part of the XTERRA European Tour Championship US$20,000 prize purse. Batelier repeats as tour champ after having gone a perfect 4-for-4 in 2009 and win- ning 3 of the 4 races he entered this year. Look for Batelier to be a strong contender for the XTERRA World Championship title this year in Maui. The women’s title was to be determined on the trails of Switzerland. Holding a slim lead over Lorblanchet in the standings Renata Bucher didn’t have to win in Switzerland to be crowned European Tour Champ for the fifth time, she simply had to finish ahead of her. But on the second lap of the run the French woman was able to pass Bucher for the race lead and hold on for first place. The win gave Lorblanchet a total of 380 points in the tour standings and locked her into a tie with Bucher for the women’s tour title. XTERRA tie-breaker rules are determined by the finishing position in the last race of the season. By winning the last race, Bubu tied Renata and the tie breaker made her the series champ. This year, on the eve of the XTERRA World Championship another XTERRA legend will be honored at the night of champions dinner. Past recipients are... NED OVEREND (2005) After retiring from mountain biking in 1996 at the age of 40 (he won six national titles and became mountain bikings first world champion in 1990), Overend competed in the first-ever XTERRA in 1996, finishing third. In ‘97 he was second, and in ‘98 and ‘99 he won consecutive World Championships at the ripe young age of 42 & 43. He was also the XTERRA USA Series Champion in 2002. At the 2004 World Championship, at age 50, Overend posted the 9th fastest bike split and placed 21st overall. Midway through the bike course Peter Reid was overheard saying “There’s a 50-year-old in front of me!” He was so devastating on the mountain bike that he earned the nicknames of “Deadly Nedly” and “The Lung.” At the end of his career, commentators respectfully called him “The Old Man of the Mountain.”

SCOTT TINLEY (2006) In 1996, Scott competed in XTERRA's inaugural event, known as Aquaterra at the time. That day, he finished in 4th place and went on to finish in the top 10 in both 1997 and '98. But more than just an athlete, Scott was one of the early ambassadors for the sport. Tinley was at the sharp end of getting athletes to Maui. When you look at the high level pro's that came 10 years ago, it is far more impressive than what one, solitary, unusual race with a $5,000 prize list should have attracted. Jimmy Riccitello, Mike Pigg, Wes Hobson, Ray Browning, Pat Brown, , Emilio Desoto, Jeff Devlin, Kenny Glah, Paul Huddle, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby, Sian Welch, Karen Smeyers and more. A lot of that participation is because of ST, who helped found and develop the sport of off-road triathlon.

KERSTIN WEULE (2007) Kerstin Weule, using equally deadly swim, mountain bike and run speed, won more XTERRA races than anyone (until Jamie Whitmore took on the challenge). She won 19 XTERRA titles, including the US. Pro Series in 1999 and 2000, and the 2000 World Championship. Born in Braunlage, Germany in 1966, Weule’s name was synonymous with XTERRA for years. The winning started in 1998 in Louisiana and she won the next two big races. In her career, Kerstin won at almost every U.S. venue where XTERRA traveled too, including races in the UK and Canada. Weule brought much to XTERRA – an open disposition, the ability to share all that she knew at XTERRA University clinics, a great laugh, her cartwheel at the finish line, & blue painted toenails on raceday.

JIMMY RICCITELLO (2008) Flash back to 1996… AquaTerra…the first XTERRA…123 Speedo-clad racers on the start line at dawn on the beach in Wailea, Maui. A who’s who of triathlon and mountain biking showed up to try something completely new…off-road triathlon. And, it turned out that XTERRA with its catch phrase “Your toughest competitor is Mother Nature” was right up Riccitello’s alley. He took the inaugural XTERRA World Championship by more than three minutes over triathlon great Mike Pigg. After the win, he said “Man this race is a bitch, but it’s the true spirit of triathlon – the athlete against the course”. Over seven years Riccitello raced XTERRA all over the U.S., including six more Maui World Championships, and was always the life of the party.

MICHAEL TOBIN (2009) Tobin won at everything he tried, posting championships in running (and not your usual 5K but running up mountains for a couple hours); duathlon, where he was Powerman Champ twice with 14 international victories; XTERRA with 16 victories and a World Championship; and adventure racing – where he has won all over the world. Tobin dominat- ed XTERRA for years. He won Kirkwood in 1997; won 3 of 4 in 1998; and won 9 out of 10 in 1999. To that point, the one prize that eluded Tobin was Maui. He was 4th in 1997 – 3rd in 1998 – 2nd in 1999 and finally won it all in 2000. He’s the last American to win off-road triathlon’s greatest race. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

63 THE XTERRA PLANET

At the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one- off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined to become a lifestylea movement.

And look at what XTERRA has become

- From that one race in 1996 to 100+ in 15 countries in a 14-year span including a 65-stop America Tour for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found on nearly every continent in the world.

- XTERRA initiated a series of camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out more than a quarter-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garner the attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize close to 200 amateur regional champions and 24 amateur national champions, plus relay team and collegiate national champs, XTERRA Trail Run Series, National and World Champs..

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV and XTERRA.TV. Dozens of adventure themed shows reach into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places. Our very own 24/7 web TV network, www.xterra.tv, allows viewers to watch our shows on demand for free.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, with races in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game so we selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website.

- With the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.

- We've opened the doors for runners with the XTERRA Trail Running Series. This year there are more than 60 5km, 10km, and 21km runs reaching into 15 U.S. States and several countries - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- We launched the XTERRA Eco Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the communities that host us.

- XTERRA brand licensees have introduced bicycling accessories and XTERRA exercise equipment, XTERRA footwear is widely available with revolutionary designed trail runners, and XTERRA Wetsuits continues to increase its market share of the wetsuit category.

- We created our very own quarterly magazine, The XTERRA Planet, to keep our membership connected and show- case the amazing athletes and photography we’ve collected through the years.

- And, XTERRA is just 14 years old...
