The number-one international business-to-business exhibition of the espresso coffee trade industry will be hosted from 25th to 27th October 2012 by the Montebello Exhibition Centre, being organised by Aries – Chamber of Commerce of Trieste in cooperation with Assocaffè Trieste and Trieste Coffee Cluster. An international meeting point for visitors from 85 countries – brought to Trieste also thanks to a special partnership with Lufthansa, official carrier of the event – TriestEspresso is above all an occasion to showcase the quality of Italian-made espresso coffee and products: the 230 exhibitors do comprise many brands-icons of Italian quality. This year, however, will also see a record number of exhibitors from producing countries. The opening conference will be a tribute to them. <The positive outcome of this exhibition will involve the entire local area, and will not be limited to the city’s coffee industry – pointed out Antonio Paoletti, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Trieste –. This will be the last expo to be hosted by the Montebello Exhibition Centre: the 2014 expo will be held at Trieste’s Maritime Station, whose warehouse 42 is currently being renovated. This new location will enhance the event even more. The city and its institutions, the Municipality and the Province of Trieste in particular, like us shareholders of Fiera Trieste Spa now in liquidation, will hopefully cooperate with us in taking this event to always higher levels.> <Trieste holds the number-one position as the main coffee-importing port. There will be bartender competitions, in particular the 2nd Mitteleuropean Barista Open and the semi-finals of the Café Bartenders Italian Championship. The opening conference, scheduled for Thursday 25th October at 10 am in the Congress Hall of pavilion H, will take a journey through some of the most representative producing countries, described by the representatives of their respective Coffee Boards. Coffee: from Trieste, a Journey Through Producing Countries will illustrate the recent developments of those markets. The conference will focus on the factors determining the quality and the quantity of the beans, the development lines in individual markets, the effects of the current economic situation and future prospects. In addition, as those countries have been increasingly acting as consumers too, a special focus will be devoted to this new relevant role they play. Production and consumptions will therefore be the main topics discussed by the speakers at the conference. What about the stages of this unique journey? The first leg will take us to South-East Asia, in Indonesia, a country that stands out for its huge volumes of Robusta coffee, but where a growing – yet still minority – share of Arabica coffee has become relevant in the past few years. Priyo Iswanto, Chargé d'Affaires of the Indonesian Embassy in Rome will present his report. Ricardo Villanueva, Chairman of Anacafe will then take us to Guatemala to learn everything about the world surrounding one of the coffees with the finest aroma; next, Yenugula Raghuramulu, Joint Research Director of India’s Coffee Board, will take us back to the territory of a giant of Asian coffee. Then, the journey will take us back to Latin America, first to stop in Brazil, together with Vanusia Nogueira, Executive Director of the Brazil Speciality Coffee Association, and Ivan Barbosa Netto, Director of Exportaminas, and then in the interesting coffee plantations of El Salvador with Benjamin Reinaldo Monge Ramos, Executive Director Advisor of the Consejo Salvadoreño del Café. The café was founded by Giovanni Giotta who, after immigrating to the United States from Italy, missed the espresso houses of Italy and decided to open his own coffee house. Caffe Trieste is credited with igniting the “espresso movement” and is now an internationally known group of four Italian-themed coffee houses in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas. In the early years, the café became a meeting place for writers of the Beat Movement who lived in North Beach during the 1950s and 1960s and is now known for its high quality coffee, Italian snacks and for hosting musical performances that range from opera to original music to old-world Italian. The “Caffe Trieste Saturday Concert,” a traditional family musical performance that often features guest performances by local singers, is one of the longest running musical show in San Francisco.

I’d finished teaching the last class in my first course on Italian history at University College London and told the students I’d take them out for a taste of something Italian. We headed up to Euston station where I bought them all a cappuccino at the newly opened Costa Coffee outlet, an offshoot of the coffee roasting company established by two brothers from Piacenza . A few weeks later I ran into one of the class who told me how much he’d liked it. “Do you know I’d never had a cappuccino before and I’ve gone back to get quite a few since”. Fifteen years on that memory seems to date from another era. It’s impossible now to imagine any incoming student not being familiar with the entire range of ‘Italian coffees’, while cappuccino can be bought at any college catering facility. Espresso-based coffee beverages have conquered not just the Northern European, American and Australasian markets, but are also spreading rapidly in the emerging Asian economies, notably India and China. Costa Coffee was acquired by the UK catering giant Whitbread in 1995 and has expanded from around 40 to 400 UK outlets, while also becoming a major player in the new coffee shop markets of the Middle East.

    A San Francisco: passeggiata nel quartiere di North Beach Alla scoperta dei luoghi cult della Beat Generation Una passeggiata di circa due ore a North Beach, nel cuore di San Francisco alla scoperta di quel fenomeno noto come controcultura che ha dato vita al movimento hippie. BEAT MUSEUM 540, Broadway Il Beat Museum, fondato da una coppia di fanatici del movimento, è un omaggio agli artisti della Beat Generation come Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg e Gary Snyder ed ospita manoscritti originali, foto ed effetti personali di questi miti indiscussi. Il museo spiega la nascita del movimento, i propri ideali ed ovviamente l’influenza sulla controcultura degli anni 60. CAFFE’ TRIESTE 601, Vallejo Street Il Caffè Trieste è uno dei luoghi preferiti dagli scrittori dell’epoca come Kerouac, Ginsberg, Alan Watts, Gregory Corso, Richard Brautigan e molti altri. In tempi più recenti il locale ha anche ospitato Francis Ford Coppola, che lì ha scritto gran parte de “Il Padrino”. Si dice che Caffè Trieste sia stato il primo bar sulla West Coast a servire il vero espresso italiano che non si può dunque non assaggiare mentre si osservano le foto dei famosi personaggi che ricoprono le pareti. LANGUAGE OF THE BIRDS Sulla strada tra il Beat Museum e Caffe Trieste, fermatevi all’angolo tra Broadway e Columbus Avenue. Guardatevi intorno e percepite la magia eterea di "Language of the Birds," la scultura composta da 23 libri illuminati sospesi nel cielo di North Beach. Parole e frasi in Inglese, Italiano e Cinese decorano il pavimento della piazza come fossero precipitate dalle pagine dei libri sovrastanti.
