The unease with which many people have reacted to the plan in Phuket mirrors a nationwide trend revealed by Assumption University’s ABAC poll, which found that more people admitted to having gambled before (35%) than those who who actually support the legalization of gambling (32%). More than anything else, the figures reveal the extent to which Thais view gambling as a vice – rather than a form of entertainment. One aspect that has emerged from the debate is that all sides seem to agree that it makes sense to set up casinos on Thai soil as a way of parting foreign tourists from their cash – while at the same discouraging or outrightly denying entry to poor and middle-class Thais. Apparently our paternalistic leaders feel Thais cannot be trusted with the same rights in their own country as those enjoyed by for- eigners – at least when it comes to indulging in this particular vice. This strange reversal of the normal “double pricing” strategy long in use at national parks and other tourist attractions around the country would have the desired affect among all but the richest Thais, Letters who would continue to indulge in the wide variety of gambling op- tions already available to them – legal and otherwise. CHIANG MAI: The cream of the Island Furniture Cricket League were on tour in Chiang Mai February 22 to 24 as part of the second Inter-regional Cup. Teams played three 40-over matches over the three days, with the Phuket lads facing stiff opposition from teams from the South, Central and the Northeast regions of Thailand. Phuket came up against strong teams and managed one win and two losses, with a poor show of batting letting the side down. In the first match, Phuket faced off against the South team, only to lose by eight wickets. In game two of the competition, the Central team took the match by 105 runs. Phuket had better luck in the final match of the campaign, tak- ing it to the Northeast team and winning the match by a convincing six wickets. Camdyn du Preez was in fine form at the crease, scoring 37, 30 and 47. Other outstanding performances included Anand’s bowling of 4 wickets for 30 runs off eight overs in the final game and scoring 42 runs – earning him the “Man of the Match” award. Martin Foster scored 53 not out and played well throughout the tournament. Roddy Meyer couldn’t find form with the bat, but bowled well with his menacing balls. Russell Loughland captained the team on a difficult tour with the squad accumulating injuries. Jafar Ali tried hard throughout the tour and fielded brilliantly. 36 PHUKET GAZETTE March 15 - 21, 2008 March 15 - 21, 2008 PHUKET PROPERTY PHUKET GAZETTE 37 Construction Update by Janyaporn Morel Hillside apartments on target PATONG: Developer rooftop garden and Modern Architecture & swimming pool, plus a fit- Design Co Ltd announced ness center for residents. PATONG: Work to repave the sidewalk along Sawadirak Rd, from Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd to the Patong beach road, is expected to be complete by mid-March. Suchatree Boonrit, a civil engineer at Patong Municipality Pub- lic Works Department, told the Gazette that the sidewalk is being repaved to make it safer for pedestrians as parts of it, including con- crete blocks and drain covers, have been missing since the area was damaged by the tsunami. The 1.338 million baht project is now 90% complete, he said. When complete the sidewalk will be 1.9 meters wide, 660 meters long and cover a total area of 1,254 square meters. The repaving was due to start on November 8 and was ex- pected to be complete by February 5. However, the project is behind schedule due to construction contractor JRM Engineering Construc- tion Co Ltd not commencing work until about a month after the agreed start date. As a result of the delay JRM Engineering Construction has had to pay daily fines of 1,338 baht since the agreed completion date, K. Suchatree said. 38 PHUKET GAZETTE March 15 - 21, 2008
