July has come to its end after having hosted several very important events: the fourth and last stage of the Hyundai World Cup, the Universiade in Italy and the Tokyo Olympic Games Test Event. Our archers managed to stand on the podium at the three of them.

The were beautifully opened on July 26. Archery will be contested starting on the 7th and finishing on the 11th, just on the same day the Games will come to their end. I represented World Archery Americas at the Pan Am Sports General Assembly on July 25. It was an important meeting at which several significant areas were addressed.

I will be seeing some of our National Federation Presidents at our General Assembly on August 5th, and during the competition. I am sure we will have a great tournament and that our archers will enjoy the shoot and the Games in general.

Copa Mundial Hyundai en Berlin / Hyundai World Cup in Berlin

The last stage of the 2019 Hyundai World Cup was held in Berlin, Germany on July 1-7. The Americas fielded a contingent of 32 archers from Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago and the United States.

Alexis RUIZ won her fourth consecutive individual medal in the 2019 World Cup tour in the Compound Women event, but this time it was the most valuable one: Gold. She defeated Colombia’s Sara LOPEZ in the semifinals and France’s Sophie DODEMONT in the match for the first place. LOPEZ edged Yesim BOSTAN (TUR) in the duel for Bronze 147-147 (shoot-off). The Colombian topped the qualification round under very windy conditions that caused all archers to shoot twenty of more points lower than usual.

Kris SCHAFF (USA) claimed individual Bronze in the Compound Men event, while three teams from the United States jumped to the third position on the podium: Compound Women, Compound Men and Recurve Men.

Archery was once again part of the program of the Summer Universiade, which was this time held in the Italian city of Napoli on July 8-13. 203 participants from 45 countries were present, including representatives of Argentina, US Virgin Islands, Mexico and United States.

Korea fielded a strong team which included world record holder KANG Chae Young (RW), Team Olympic Champion CHOI Misun (RW), World Cup stage Champion LEE Woo Seok (RM) and World Championships mixed team champions SO Chaewon (CW) and KIM Jongho (CM).

The most outstanding performance in the Qualification Round came from KIM Jongho who shot the highest score in the 2019 season with 716 points in the compound men event. The Korean archer was not able to reach the gold match and had to settle for Bronze. The title went to Russia’s Anton BULAEV. On the compound women’s side, Mexico’s Andrea BECERRA defeated Yesim BOSTAN (TUR) and SO Chaewon in the semis and the gold match respectively to win the first position for her country and for the Americas.

Teams were formed only by two archers at the Universiade. The Compound Men duet from Mexico (Miguel BECERRA and Rodolfo GONZALEZ) claimed the Bronze, just the same as the US Recurve Men pair with Adam HEIDT and Matthew ZUMBO to complete our medal collection at the event.

LEE Woo Seok and KANG Chae Young emerged as recurve individual champions. Korea (4), Russia (2), and Chinese Taipei, Turkey, Mexico and Estonia (1 apiece) won gold medals at this major event.

Rainy and hot sessions characterized the competition of the Ready Steady Tokyo Olympic Test Event held on July 12-18. 130 recurve archers gathered to compete in individual and mixed team head-to-head matches. The Americas were represented by Canada, Colombia, Mexico and the United States.

The women’s qualification round was dominated by two young archers belonging to Korea’s second team: JEON Ina (688), and AN San (675). Taipei´s TANG Ya-Ting followed with 671. The men’s 72 arrow round was shot in rainy conditions which did not allow the achievement of very high scores. Five archers who have been at the top along the 2019 season anchored in the leading positions: KIM Woojin (KOR-679), Brady ELLISON (USA-677), LEE Seungyun (KOR-674), Sjef VAN DEN BERG (NED-674) and Mete GAZOZ (TUR-673).

The second day featured the mixed team round with the 16 highest ranked teams. Two of our pairs, USA (6th) and Colombia (13th) made the cut to shoot matches. In the 1/8 Round, the Americans edged Germany 5-4, while the South Americas upset fourth seed India 5- 3. In the quarter finals the United States surrendered to Chinese Taipei, but the Colombians shot extremely well to defeat the local Japanese 6-0. Korea was Ana Maria RENDON and Daniel PINEDA’s next opponent, a hurdle that proved very hard to clear for these two archers. In the match for Bronze, the Colombians found their way to victory back again and nocked Chinese Taipei 5-1 with set scores of 38, 38 and 39 to win a promising medal only three weeks before the start of the Pan American Games. Korea and Russia finished first and second respectively.

Russia, Korea, Colombia

The following five days were used for individual eliminations and finals. Unfortunately, none of our women managed to go beyond the first round. Four Asians advanced to the final matches, as a result of which AN San (KOR), Deepika KUMARI (IND) and TAN Ya- Ting (TPE) stood up on the podium. China’s ZHENG Yichai finished fourth.

World Champion Brady ELLISON (USA) shot extremely well except for his semifinal match versus Korea’s LEE Seungyun, and had to face Sjef VAN DEN BERG for the third place in a remake of the Rio 2016 Olympic Bronze medal match. A 30-point fifth set secured him the medal and the right to escort Gold medalist LEE and second place finisher KIM Woojin on the podium.

The Test Event was a great opportunity for all the archers in attendance to get to know the venue where the Olympic archery competition will be held a year from now.
