1 Our October-November bulletin includes an account on the results of our archers at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018, where the Americas achieved our best historical result in this type of event. Congratulations to our thirteen archers who competed in Buenos Aires, and to their coaches. You will also find brief reports on two important coaching seminars held in San Salvador and Mar del Plata; and news on two archers from our continent who have recently set new world records. WAREOS is now open for several events to take place in the next few months, including the WRE to be held in Santiago de Chile, and the Hyundai World Cup to take place in Medellin. Both of these events will be crucial in the preparation of our archers for the World Championships in the Netherlands and the Pan American Games in Peru. We are currently working on the calendar of seminars, training camps, and other development projects to be implemented in 2019. You will very soon receive more details. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a joyful season as we approach Christmas and the New Year. The third Youth Olympic Games were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 11- 17. 64 recurve cadet archers from around the world met to compete in three events: individual men, individual women, and mixed teams. 4 The Americas were represented by 13 archers, coming from the USA, Mexico and Brazil (two from each); and Canada, Argentina, Cuba, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Chile (1 from each of these countries). The girls’ qualification round was dominated by the Asians, with the top five places going to China, Japan, India, Korea and Chinese Taipei. Our best archer was Valentina VAZQUEZ (MEX), who ranked 7th with 659 in the 72-arrow QR at 60 meters. Valentina VAZQUEZ (MEX) Asia was also very strong among the boys, with leading qualification round positions for Korea, Chinese Taipei and China. Mexico’s Carlos VACA was our best representative, in fourth place with 680 points. Scores over 660 points were also achieved by David CADENA (COL-667), Trenton COWLES (USA-665), Alejandro BENITEZ (PAR-663), Mateus DE CARVALHO ALMEIDA (BRA-662), and Hazael RODRIGUEZ (CUB-660). The first event contested was the mixed team. A boy and a girl from different countries were teamed up on the basis of their qualification round positions. Five of our archers survived the 1/16 round, and three of them moved on to the 1/4: Carlos VACA (MEX) with teammate KANG Jin Hwa (PRK), Agustina GIANNASIO (ARG) with Aitthiwat SOITHONG (THA), and USA’s Trenton COWLES with Namibia’s Quinn REDDIG. Team ARG-THA won their 1/4 and semifinal matches and went on to the Gold match. The teams to which VACA and COWLES belonged shot against each other in the quarters. The American and his Namibian companion won 6-2 to advance to the semis, where they were beaten by Juan Manuel SOLERA (ESP) and Kyla TOURAINE-HELIAS (FRA). In the Bronze match COWLES and REDDIG defeated a team with archers from New 5 Zealand and Chinese Taipei to anchor in the third place. The French girl and the Spanish boy became Youth Olympic Champions in the mixed team event as they beat Argentina- Thailand 5 to 1. Mixed Team medal winners In the individual women’s event, two of our archers managed to reach to quarterfinals: Mexico’s Valentina VAZQUEZ and USA’ Catalina GNORIEGA. GNORIEGA lost to Elia CANALES (ESP) 3 to 7, and ended up 5th. VAZQUEZ overwhelmed New Zealand’s Rebecca JONES and made it to the semifinals, where she was victimized by the Spaniard. In the match for Bronze, Valentina led 3 to 1 after the first two sets, but her technical form collapsed and lost to Korea’s SON Yeryeong. An outstanding fourth place for the Mexican, the same position achieved by her countrywoman Mariana AVITIA at the first Youth Olympics in Singapore 8 years ago. ZHANG Mengyao (CHN) took the gold in a 6-2 match versus CANALES.
