  • ''The Mahatma Is Our Past, He Is Our Present and He Is Also Our Future.'' Gandhi Strived to Lead the Country to Not
THE ORCHID SCHOOL SECONDARY AND SENIOR SECONDARY DOMAIN, 2020-2021 THEME ACTIVITY FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE ‘’The Mahatma is our past, He is our present and He is also our future.’’ Gandhi strived to lead the country to not just political independence, but to a better India and a society free of caste, religious, economic and even gender prejudices. He was the inspiration for our largely non-violent, inclusive and democratic freedom struggle. He continues to remain the ethical benchmark, against which we test our political ideas, government policies, and the hopes and wishes of our country men. The world needs to invoke his ideas in the building of the 21st century that is marked by justice and equality, by incorporating global peace and wisdom. Gandhi is revered, not only for his contributions as a freedom fighter, but also for conceptualizing and providing a new way to deal with injustice and oppression. He was an exponent of non- violence or Ahimsa and provided a unique philosophy, based on truth and non-violence as a guide to lead one’s life. Ahimsa is nothing but love, and love is that energy which cleanses our inner life and uplifts our thoughts. Such love perpetuates noble feelings like benevolence, compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, generosity, kindness, sympathy, etc. Young minds are the best assets a country can have and by using the power of ideas, they can lead us towards a New India, an India that has the best of education, health and technology, among others. Gandhi was a strong proponent of India where young minds lead the country to greater heights, India free from hunger, poverty and discrimination.

    1. STATEMENT TO THE PRESS It is matter of great grief and disappointment to me not to be able to complete the whole of the Bihar tour as was previously arranged. I see that the continuous travelling for the past 12 months has put a severe strain upon my constitution. I must therefore take the tour in easy stages. The Reception Committee has kindly accommo- dated me. I hope that the committee and the people in the parts which are being omitted will forgive me. I shall endeavour early next year to finish the balance of the tour. The Searchlight, 25-9-1925 2. SPEECH AT PUBLIC MEETING, BIKRAM1 September 25,1925 Mahatmaji . first apologized for not being able to go to them the previous day as arranged. Then he told them that he did not know what he was to say to them as the thing which he wanted to say they must have heard already. Their presence in such large numbers was a sufficient proof of it. The belief was growing in him every day that they had nothing except the charkha which would appease the hunger of crores of Indian villagers. They knew that for four months in the year they had no work and that time could be employed best in plying the charkha. The poorest of them had to spend on cloth at least five or ten rupees in a year. The small sum amounted to crores which could be saved and brought in the villages only by the charkha. He did not know why people did not understand such a simple thing.

Every issue deal with a single topic comprehensively sharing views from a wide spectrum ranging from academicians to policy makers to scholars. The magazine is essential to build an in-depth understanding of various socio-economic issues. From the exam point of view, however, not all articles are important. Some go into scholarly depths and others discuss agendas that are not relevant for your preparation. Added to this is the difficulty of going through a large volume of information, facts and analysis to finally extract their essence that may be useful for the exam. We are not discouraging from reading the magazine itself. So, do not take this as a document which you take read, remember and reproduce in the examination. Its only purpose is to equip you with the right understanding. 1. INDIAN COLONIAL EMIGRATION I have carefully read the resolution issued at Simla by the Government of India on the 1st instant, embodying the report of the Inter-Departmental Conference recently held in London.1 It will be remembered that this was the conference referred to in the Viceregal speech of last year at the opening of the Sessions of the Viceregal Legislative Council. It will be remembered, too, that this was the conference which Sir James Meston and Sir S. P. Sinha were to have attended but were unable to attend owing to their having returned to India before the date of the meeting of the conference.2 It is stated in the report under discussion that these gentlemen were to discuss the question of emigration to certain English colonies informally with the two Secretaries of State, i.e., the Secretary of State for India and the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Lord Islington3, Sir A. Steel Maitland4 and Messrs Seton 5, Crindle6, Green7 and Macnaughton8 constituted the Conference. To take the wording of the Resolution, this Conference sat “to consider the proposals for a new assisted system of emigration to British Guiana, Trinidad, Jamaica and Fiji”. The public should therefore note that this assisted emigration is to be confined only to the four Crown Colonies mentioned and not to the self-governing Colonies of South Africa, Canada or Australia, or the Crown Colony of Mauritius.9 What follows will show the importance of this distinction. It is something to be thankful for, that “the Government of India have not yet considered the report and reserved judgement on all the points raised in it”.

  • Non-Violent Civil Disobedience
Lessons in Non-violent Civil Disobedience From the life of M. K. Gandhi And His Legacy By Arun J. Mehta 1 Preface There are many armed conflicts going on all around the world everyday. Many countries have amassed so many nuclear weapons that they can destroy all life on earth many times over. Some nations have already used these weapons of mass destruction to kill hundreds of thousands of civilian children, women, and men. Too many nations are spending enormous amounts of money and other resources on developing, acquiring, and using their military might while hundreds of thousands of their citizens go hungry. The ‘military industrial complex’ and powerful media are manipulating and / or controlling major policies in many democratic and not so democratic governments to spend billions of dollars in acquiring arms and creating conflicts. A lot of us would like to change the world for better but do not know ‘how’. Life of Mohandās K. Gāndhi can be a good ‘role model’ to study and emulate. He was a very scared, shy, scrawny, ordinary child and a failure as a young lawyer. By his own admission he was: “I claim to be no more than an average man with less than average ability.” How did he transform himself from a tongue-tied lawyer to a fearless leader of four hundred million people in their successful fight for independence from the brutal, well armed, and established British Empire? His transformation was so great, Albert Einstein said: “For generations to come...people will scarcely believe that such a one as this, ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.” Who guided him? Who were his guru-s (teachers)? Can we learn from his life? He said: “I have not the shadow of a doubt that any man or woman can achieve what I have, if he or she would make the same effort and cultivate the same hope and faith.” He did not have one single person who can be called his guru.
