    Guest Editor Introduction As the Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Tokyo Bay Urayasu-Ichikawa Medical Center in Chiba, Japan, Professor Minoru Tabata is undoubtedly one of the leading academic surgeons in Japan. Following graduation from the University of Tokyo in 1999, Professor Tabata began his general surgical training at the University of Tokyo Hospital and Affiliated Hospitals, subsequently specializing in cardiovascular surgery. In 2004, he moved to Boston, where he stayed for three fruitful years at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. During this period, he received a Masters of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. After two years at Colombia University Medical Center, New York, as a Clinical Instructor and also several months at the OLV Clinic in Aalst, Belgium, as the Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow, Professor Tabata returned back to Japan to share his experience and skills with his local colleagues. For the past five years, he has held professorial positions at three universities, as well as in his position as Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery. With a keen interest in research, Professor Tabata completed his PhD in 2014. He has published over 90 articles and 15 book chapters throughout his career, and has been an invited speaker more than 100 times at various national and international meetings. He is member of numerous Japanese and international societies, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery, and more, and similarly has appointments with various professional Working Committees. The Annals of Cardiothoracic Surgery is honored to have Professor Tabata helm this special issue on the topic of transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

    Press Release People Power Again! Following Soga, proponents canceled their coal-fired power plant project in Sodegaura. The JERA’s project in Yokosuka is the only coal-fired power plant project left in the Tokyo Bay area. February 1, 2019 FoE Japan On January 31, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., Kyushu Electric Power Co. Inc and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. announced that they had canceled their coal-fired power plant project, namely “Chiba Sodegaura Coal-fired Power Plant I and II Construction Project” (Plant I: 1,000 MW, operation from 2025, Plant II: 1,000 MW, operation from 2026). They are now considering of liquid natural gas (LNG) as the alternative source for power generationi . They explained the reason of cancellation on their website as that “the project cannot yield initially expected investment returns.” Friends of the Earth Japan joins the collaborating local groups and environmental groups in welcoming this decision. Due to possible health and environmental impacts that the project might cause, civil society had been protesting against the project with a number of activities, such as distributing flyers at stations, organizing study sessions for the public as well as submitting a written statement to the mayor of Chiba Prefecture and the Ministry of the Environment since 2016. Furthermore, residents in the Tokyo Bay area formed an anti-coal power group in 2017 to take collective actions, including demonstrations in front of Tokyo Gas and Idemitsu Kosan, a campaign to send post cards to the president of Tokyo Gas requesting to cancel the project, and a demonstration during the general shareholders meeting in front of the Tokyo Gas headquarters.

Even the Metropolitan Expressway took heavy damage centered on the coastal regions where the shaking was strong. In this article, we introduce the results of the emergency inspections of the Metropolitan Expressway conducted after the earthquake and examples of the damage discovered. From the bridge pier inspections targeting bearings and earthquake-resistance reinforcements, it is clearly necessary to focus on damage around bearings when elevated bridges have major curvature or inclination such as in junctions, as well as when piers are steel structures. In addition, considerable surface difference in level was observed in areas where the piers were constructed on reclaimed land, and the reason is thought cavities that occurred by land subsidence before the earthquake become larger as a result of the earthquake. 1. Introduction The world's largest magnitude 9.0 earthquake, with an epicenter off the Sanriku coast in the Pacific Ocean, struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Not only was there damage from the tremors of this earthquake's seismic motion, but Japan witnessed the greatest disaster in her history due to the effects from the giant tsunami that hit the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region. This earthquake was observed to be seismic intensity 5 Upper even in the Tokyo Metropolitan area, which is more than 300 km from the epicenter (Figure 1-1).
