The Onnagawa Formation is one of such deposits, which shows cyclic sedimentary rhythms reflecting oscil- lations of the marine environment in the Japan Sea. However, the age of the Onnagawa Formation is still poorly con- strained due to the poor preservation of siliceous microfossils. To better constrain its age, we performed U-Pb dating of zircon grains from a tuff layer from the middle part of the Onnagawa Formation, and obtained an age of 11.18 ± 0.37 Ma.

  • Press Release People Power Again! Following Soga, Proponents
Press Release People Power Again! Following Soga, proponents canceled their coal-fired power plant project in Sodegaura. The JERA’s project in Yokosuka is the only coal-fired power plant project left in the Tokyo Bay area. February 1, 2019 FoE Japan On January 31, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., Kyushu Electric Power Co. Inc and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. announced that they had canceled their coal-fired power plant project, namely “Chiba Sodegaura Coal-fired Power Plant I and II Construction Project” (Plant I: 1,000 MW, operation from 2025, Plant II: 1,000 MW, operation from 2026). They are now considering of liquid natural gas (LNG) as the alternative source for power generationi . They explained the reason of cancellation on their website as that “the project cannot yield initially expected investment returns.” Friends of the Earth Japan joins the collaborating local groups and environmental groups in welcoming this decision. Due to possible health and environmental impacts that the project might cause, civil society had been protesting against the project with a number of activities, such as distributing flyers at stations, organizing study sessions for the public as well as submitting a written statement to the mayor of Chiba Prefecture and the Ministry of the Environment since 2016. Furthermore, residents in the Tokyo Bay area formed an anti-coal power group in 2017 to take collective actions, including demonstrations in front of Tokyo Gas and Idemitsu Kosan, a campaign to send post cards to the president of Tokyo Gas requesting to cancel the project, and a demonstration during the general shareholders meeting in front of the Tokyo Gas headquarters.

  • Several Features of Liquefaction-Induced Damage to Houses and Buried Lifelines During the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake
Proceedings of the International Symposium on Engineering Lessons Learned from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, March 1-4, 2012, Tokyo, Japan SEVERAL FEATURES OF LIQUEFACTION-INDUCED DAMAGE TO HOUSES AND BURIED LIFELINES DURING THE 2011 GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE Susumu YASUDA1 and Keisuke ISHIKAWA2 1 Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Tokyo Denki University, Saitama, Japan, [email protected] 2 Assistant, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Tokyo Denki University, Saitama, Japan, [email protected] ABSTRACT: The 2011 Great East Japan earthquake caused severe liquefaction in Tohoku and Kanto districts. About 27,000 timber houses, a lot of buried sewage pipes and roads were damaged due to liquefaction. In Tokyo Bay area, the very long duration of the main shock and an aftershock 29 minutes later probably induced the severe liquefaction. Sidewalks and alleys buckled at several sites, probably due to a kind of sloshing of liquefied ground. Moreover, much sand boiled from the ground and the ground subsided significantly because the liquefied soils were very fine. Key Words: Great East Japan earthquake, liquefaction, house, sewage pipe, road INTRODUCTION The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, with a magnitude of Mw=9.0 occurred in the Pacific Ocean about 130 km off the northeast coast of Japan’s main island on March 11, 2011. Liquefaction occurred in a wide area of reclaimed land along Tokyo Bay, though the epicentral distance was very large, about 380 to 400 km. Much land has been reclaimed in the Tokyo Bay area since the seventeenth century. Liquefaction has been induced during past earthquakes, such as 1923 Kanto Earthquake and 1987 Chibake-toho-oki Earthquake.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND COASTAL DEFENCES IN TOKYO BAY Sayaka Hoshino1, Miguel Esteban2, Takahito Mikami3, Tomoyuki Takabatake4, Tomoya Shibayama 5 Sea level rise and an increase in typhoon intensity are two of the expected consequences from future climate change. In the present work a methodology to change the intensity of tropical cyclones in Japan was developed, which can be used to assess the inundation risk to different areas of the country. An example of how this would affect one of the worst typhoons to hit the Tokyo Bay area in the 20th century was thus developed, highlighting the considerable dangers associated with this event, and how current sea defences could be under danger of failing by the end of the 21st century. Keywords: storm surge; sustainability of coastal defences; sea level rise, typhoons INTRODUCTION Every year, Japan is attacked by a number of tropical cyclones, some of which can be very strong and cause widespread damage. Apart from wind damage, these events also generate powerful waves and storm surges, which can inundate coastal areas and lead to the destruction of property and the loss of lives. Global warming as a consequence of increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere could lead to an increase in the intensity in tropical cyclones in the future, which would compound the problems already presented by sea level rise (also expected to accelerate in the course of the 21st century). Tropical cyclones need high surface sea temperatures to form (typically at temperatures of over 26°C), and use the heat from the evaporation of sea water to maintain or increase their strength.
