Humanoid Robots – from Fiction to Reality?
KI-Zeitschrift, 4/08, pp. 5-9, December 2008 Humanoid Robots { From Fiction to Reality? Sven Behnke Humanoid robots have been fascinating people ever since the invention of robots. They are the embodiment of artificial intelligence. While in science fiction, human-like robots act autonomously in complex human-populated environments, in reality, the capabilities of humanoid robots are quite limited. Randall Abstract Mendeley is a free, web-based tool for organizing research citations and annotating their accompanying PDF articles. Adapting Web 2.0 principles for academic scholarship, Mendeley integrates the management of the research articles with features for collaborating with researchers locally and worldwide. In this article the features of Mendeley are discussed and critiqued in comparison to other, similar tools. These features include citation management, online synchronization and collaboration, PDF management and annotation, and integration with word processing software. The article concludes with a discussion of how a social networking tool such as Mendeley might impact the academic scholarship process. We introduce the basic concepts needed to understand how writing systems and character encodings function, and how they work together. The intersection of the Unicode Standard and the International Phonetic Al- phabet is often not met without frustration by users. Nevertheless, thetwo standards have provided language researchers with a consistent computational architecture needed to process, publish and analyze data from many different languages. We bring to light common, but not always transparent, pitfalls that researchers face when working with Unicode and IPA. Our research uses quantitative methods to compare languages and uncover and clarify their phylogenetic relations. However, the majority of lexical data available from the world’s languages is in author- or document-specific orthogra- phies. -

Here, Alex Hope sets out how his workflow has developed using Zotero, Dropbox, Goodreader and his iPad. Article Discovery I use a variety of methods to keep on top of research in my f ield, and to search f or articles when preparing a paper or presentation. Foremost is the use of RSS f eeds to deliver alerts of new articles in journals I f ollow. I use Google Reader to manage my f eeds and usually browse through new f eed articles using Flipboard on my iPad or iPhone. If I come across an interesting article that I think I may like to read and use, I email myself the link. This means that when I check my email every morning, I can navigate to the article and save it in my ref erence manager f or reading and marking up. If I am researching a paper, I tend to search journal repositories such as Web of Knowledge, although more of ten than not I f ind Google Scholar f inds what I need quickly and accurately. Finally I am f inding that Twitter is a f antastic resource f or uncovering new research as an increasing number of researchers and research groups have a presence. -

John Ousterhout of the University of California, Berkeley, designed it. It is a combination of a scripting language and its own interpreter that gets embedded to the application, we develop with it. Tcl was developed initially for Unix. It was then ported to Windows, DOS, OS/2, and Mac OSX. Tcl is much similar to other unix shell languages like Bourne Shell (Sh), the C Shell (csh), the Korn Shell (sh), and Perl. It aims at providing ability for programs to interact with other programs and also for acting as an embeddable interpreter. Even though, the original aim was to enable programs to interact, you can find full-fledged applications written in Tcl/Tk. Features of Tcl The features of Tcl are as follows − ∑ Reduced development time. ∑ Powerful and simple user interface kit with integration of TK. ∑ Write once, run anywhere. Chapter 48 Modeling and Control of Legged Robots Summary Introduction The promise of legged robots over standard wheeled robots is to provide im- proved mobility over rough terrain. This promise builds on the decoupling between the environment and the main body of the robot that the presence of articulated legs allows, with two consequences. First, the motion of the main body of the robot can be made largely independent from the roughness of the terrain, within the kinematic limits of the legs: legs provide an active suspen- sion system. Indeed, one of the most advanced hexapod robots of the 1980s was aptly called the Adaptive Suspension Vehicle [1]. Second, this decoupling al- lows legs to temporarily leave their contact with the ground: isolated footholds on a discontinuous terrain can be overcome, allowing to visit places absolutely out of reach otherwise. -
