What it means to live in 2 history is to recognize that the past has not passed." Radicalism, in general and as resistance to injustice and power imbalances, has played a noble part in history. In an editorial in support of affirmative action, 3 a local columnist recently commented that he was struck by the irony and ahistoricism of the current virulent resistance to radicalism and embrace of conservatism. GRADUATE STUDENT ESSAY AWARD The Uses of Race and Religion: James Baldwin’s Pragmatist Politics in The Fire Next Time Courtney Ferriter Auburn University Abstract In The Fire Next Time, James Baldwin argues that the American dream is far from being a reality in part because there is much Americans do not wish to know about themselves. Given the current political climate in the United States, this idea seems just as timely as it did in the 1960s. Baldwin’s politics and thinking about race and religion are informed by an optimistic belief in the human capacity to love and change for the better, in contrast with Ta-Nehisi Coates, the heir appar- ent to Baldwin’s legacy. Considering current events, it seems particularly useful to turn back to The Fire Next Time. Not only does Baldwin provide a foundation for understanding racism in the United States, but more importantly, he provides some much- needed hope and guidance for the future. Baldwin discusses democ- racy as an act that must be realized, in part by coming to a greater understanding of race and religion as performative acts that have political consequences for all Americans. In this article, I examine the influence of pragmatism on Baldwin’s understanding of race and religion. By encouraging readers to acknowledge race and religion as political constructs, Baldwin highlights the inseparability of theory and practice that is a hallmark of both pragmatism and the realization of a democratic society. Furthermore, I argue that Baldwin’s politics provide a more useful framework than Coates’s for this particular historical moment because of Baldwin’s emphasis on change and evolving democracy. -

Foreword The fact that the phrase "the past illuminates the present" is abused should not prevent us from using it where it deserves to be used. Few, we believe, will turn away from this pioneering study of black nationalism without a deepened understanding of the movements that seemingly have burst upon the battle-scarred American racial scene since the mid-1960s. This is the first collection of documents devoted exclusively to black nationalism, and the introduction is one of the few essays that attempt to lay out a pattern for black nationalism over the sweep of American history. The editors, two of them historians, one a sociologist, have illuminated their subject in at least three ways. First, they have documented the persistence of black nationalism in American life. Simply put, the ideas that inform the current slogans of "Black Power" and "Black is Beautiful" have a long lineage. -

Marquette University, 2013 The media has multiple examples of Black women experiencing negative outcomes at the hands of their potential employers and the employers’ biases against particular hairstyles. Research has demonstrated that several within-race variables such as skin tone and Afrocentric facial features influence how Black individuals are treated across a number of contexts. The present study investigated hairstyle as a potential within-racial variable that effects Black women negatively in the employment context. Utilizing the Princeton trilogy methodology, researchers empirically documented the stereotypes associated with Black hairstyles (i.e., afros, dreadlocs, straightened hair). Participants were instructed to generate traits they were aware of that are associated with each hairstyle. Straightened hair was uniquely associated with clean, professional, feminine, and pretty. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 5, 2019 Media Contacts: Emma Jacobson-Sive, (323) 842-2064, [email protected] Mia Cariño, (310) 440-4544, [email protected] Skirball Cultural Center to present US premiere of new exhibition BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite April 11–September 1, 2019 First major exhibition of groundbreaking African American photographer fuses art, music, fashion, and social history LOS ANGELES, CA—The Skirball Cultural Center announces Black Is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite, the first exhibition to focus on this key—and until now under-recognized—figure of the second Harlem Renaissance. Through more than forty iconic images, Black Is Beautiful will illuminate how in the late 1950s and 1960s, Kwame Brathwaite (b. 1938) used his art to popularize “Black Is Beautiful,” now considered one of the most influential cultural movements of that era. Organized by Aperture Foundation, the exhibition will make its national debut at the Skirball from April 11 through September 1, 2019. Inspired by the writings of famed activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey, Brathwaite harnessed the power of art, music, and fashion to effect social change. Along with his brother Elombe Brath (1936–2014), he founded two organizations that were instrumental in realizing his vision: the African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS), a collective of artists, playwrights, designers, and dancers, in 1956; and Grandassa Models, a modeling group for black women, in 1962. Brathwaite organized fashion shows showcasing clothes designed by the models themselves, created stunning portraits of jazz luminaries, and captured behind-the-scenes photographs of the black arts community, including Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Miles Davis.
