Complete Recordings, Starless, Road to Red, on [And Off) the Road and Thrak Box: Live and Studio Recordings 1994–1997

Continuing for four decades, they became the only band of its generation to continually developing and ex- panding it’s style and techniques. Their music is not easily categorized: from the advanced rock music inspired by modern jazz and art music on the first four LP albums – and a lot of changes in the band personnel and set up of instruments – the music developed in the mid 1970’s to a dynamic, experimental hard rock with an art music attitude, containing sound worlds of percussion, violins and softer melodic elements blended with heavy, rhythmically complex, asymmetrical guitar riffs: The albums Larks tongues in aspic (1973), Starless and bible black (1974) and Red (1974) was highly influential. When the band was reformed with partly new musicians in 1981, they arrived with a different, of New wave and minimalism, influenced style. In a short span of three years, 1981–1984, they released albums Discipline, Beat and Three of a perfect pair, and reformed once more in 1994 to release the CD Thrak. Importantly, in the same period they managed to take total creative and commercial control of all their recorded output, and it put them in a uniquely strong independent artistic position, connected to their loyal followers. -
The Recollections of James Graham Adam (Who Married Beatrice Eleanor Man)
1 The Recollections of James Graham Adam (who married Beatrice Eleanor Man) I was born at No. ? Woodside Terrace, Glasgow, on 22nd February 1862 and christened at St. Jude's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Flint. My father was John Lindsay Adam, an East Indian merchant, head of the firm of Adam & Co., Glasgow, Batavia & Surabaya. He was the youngest of a family of I believe 13, and his father was also a merchant in Glasgow. He and his wife are buried in the Churchyard of St. Mungo's Cathedral in Glasgow. Of my father's family, the only ones I knew or have any recollection of were the eldest, James Graham Adam, after whom I was named, but don't remember ever seeing. He married a Miss Macindoe, whom we used to call Aunt James, to distinguish her from my father's sister, Aunt Jane. There were eleven children of this marriage: 1. Frank Forbes, who became Sir Frank Forbes Adam1 Bart. My father gave him his first start in life by taking him into his firm. 2. Charles, who became manager of the firm of Graham & Co. Oporto. 3. Arthur, who went out to Australia and was never heard of again. 4. Archie, who after a long career as a merchant in Glasgow died leaving a large fortune. 5. Jane, who married John Graham, head of the firm of Graham & Co. Glasgow & Calcutta, and later became a baronet2. 6. Mary, who married Robert Orr (a large and wealthy cotton and thread manufacturer) 7. Fanny, who married John Orr manufacturers. -
Of Virtual Spatiality: Surround Sound Mixing in King Crimson's Back

Toivo Burlin: The creation (and re-creation) of virtual spatiality: Surround sound mixing in King Crimson’s back catalog box sets Abstract: The article analyzes surround mixing of King Crimson’s analog recordings. “Lizard,” “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part 1),” “The Night Watch,” “Trio,” and “One Time” are analyzed using the theoretical perspec- tives of the music recording as representation and spatial design. There is a difference between live and studio recordings in surround: live recordings tend to be mixed according to the direct/ambient principle, while studio re- cordings are mixed according to the principle of direct-sound all around. Live recordings in surround can also often be understood as examples of documentarism, and studio recordings as examples of hyper realism. The spatial design of the surround mix tends to emphasize aspects of spatiality in the broad sense: where the recording can, for example, be interpreted as a landscape in sound. Introduction This essay discusses some tendencies in the emerging conventions in con- temporary surround mixing of popular music. -
The Luck of Roaring Camp Bret Harte (1836-1902)
1 Bret Harte (1839-1902) The Luck of Roaring Camp Bret Harte (1836-1902) was an American writer and journalist best known today for his tales of the California gold rush. Important in his own day, he was roundly criticized by Mark Twain for his lack of realism, among other failings. His most widely-read stories are “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” (1869) and “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” published in 1868 in the Overland Monthly. There was commotion in Roaring Camp. It could not have been a fight, for in 1850 that was not novel enough to have called together the entire settlement. The ditches and claims were not only deserted, but “Tuttle's grocery” had contributed its gamblers, who, it will be remembered, calmly continued their game the day that French Pete and Kanaka Joe shot each other to death over the bar in the front room. The whole camp was collected before a rude cabin on the outer edge of the clearing. Conversation was carried on in a low tone, but the name of a woman was frequently repeated. It was a name familiar enough in the camp,—”Cherokee Sal.” Perhaps the less said of her the better. She was a coarse and, it is to be feared, a very sinful woman. But at that time she was the only woman in Roaring Camp, and was just then lying in sore extremity, when she most needed the ministration of her own sex. Dissolute, abandoned, and irreclaimable, she was yet suffering a martyrdom hard enough to bear even when veiled by sympathizing womanhood, but now terrible in her loneliness. -
