    Live Among the White Trash: A history of nono----manman on stage “There are no No-Man concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future.” (from the official no-man website) Anyone who has followed no-man’s career over the previous ten years or so will be acutely aware that the band does not play live. If no-man “exist” as a band at all – and their infrequent releases mean they are more an ongoing understanding between two men rather than an active unit – it is only in the studio. Over a series of uncompromising albums no-man’s music has become ever more complex, yet ironically, “live sounding” than the release which proceeded it. But this organic “liveness” is mainly an illusion; the feeling of spontaneity often the result of numerous edits and takes which only the precision of studio work can produce. Others have tried to perform equally difficult music live: Radiohead ambitiously thrusting their clicks-and- cuts post-rock upon the world’s stadiums, for example. But for a variety of reasons, no-man simply haven’t tried – at least, not since 1994 and not until a one-off performance in 2006. The only comparable case is Talk Talk’s retreat into the studio in the late 1980s. Both bands have undoubtedly crafted their best work without going near an audience. 1 But it wasn’t always so. no-man were once very much a live act, promoting singles and albums with dates and undertaking two full-blown tours – though they rarely played outside London, never went further north than Newcastle, and never played outside Great Britain.

    Opeth – Sorceress (56:36, CD, Moderbolaget/Nuclear Blast/Warner, 2016) Old School-Fans, die Opeth auf Growls und Death Metal reduzieren, werden mit dem dritten „Just clean vocals“- Album in Folge erneut Schwierigkeiten haben und also weiterhin nur noch bei Konzerten bedient. Wer aber bereits zwischen „Heritage“ und “ Pale Communion“ eine deutliche Steigerung und Weiterentwicklung wahrgenommen hat und sich vielleicht für die Ausrichtung von Songs wie ‚Faith In Others‘ besonders erwärmen kann, wird diesem Zauber nun komplett verfallen. Obwohl kein wirkliches Konzeptalbum ist bei allem Abwechslungs- und Ideenreichtum doch eine deutliche atmosphärische Geschlossenheit spürbar – sowohl was musikalische wie textliche Themen angeht (vgl. dazu auch den Interview-Link bei den Surftipps unten). „Sorceress“ gelingt der Trick, den Eindruck von kompakter Zusammengehörigkeit, den „Heritage“ vermittelt, mit stärker anhaftenden, ohrwurmigeren Melodien wie bei „Pale Communion“ zu kombinieren. Akustische Gitarren und analoge Keyboardsounds sind nochmals wichtiger geworden – vgl. etwa die Ouvertüre ‚Persephone‘, das Album-Finale ‚Persephone (Slight Return)‘, oder das nach einem heftig zerrenden E-Piano-Intro in Midtempo majestätisch losrockende ‚Sorceress‘. Nicht nur der ausnahmsweise mal mit dem Fahrrad entlang des Rheins angereiste Autor war – wie man sagen könnte – wet to the bone, ein anderer Betreuer ließ sich von den kurzzeitig wahrnehmbaren Blitzen und Donner sogar leider komplett in die Flucht schlagen. In an exclusive interview with CE Pro, Alan Parsons, renowned sound engineer for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and for the Beatles, says hi-fi pros focus too much on equipment and brand names, when they should put more energy into room acoustics. He also says some surround- sound systems “really aren’t that bad.” All this from the audio wizard behind Dark Side of the Moon, and the name sake of the Alan Parson’s Project. Parsons broke into the music industry in the late 1960s when he was hired by Abbey Road Studios to work as an assistant engineer. As an assistant engineer, Parsons’ career started at a point where most music lovers only dream of reaching - working on the last two Beatles’ albums. As a full-fledged engineer, Parsons worked on projects with Paul McCartney and the Hollies, but it was his efforts on the benchmark album Dark Side of the Moon that launched his career. Throughout the rest of the 1970s and 1980s, Parsons released several albums under the name of Alan Parsons Project (APP). The 1990s marked a shift in direction for Parsons that was highlighted by his dropping of “Project” from his band name. As he entered the 2000s, Parsons continued to release new music, which includes his first foray into the electronica genre when he released 2004’s A Valid Path.

Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Questioning one's own sanity. Weird time signatures. Experimental sounds. In 1973, Pink Floyd was a somewhat known progressive rock band, but it was this, their ninth album, that catapulted them into world class rock-star status. “The Dark Side of the Moon” spent an astonishing 14 years on the “Billboard” album charts, and sold an estimated 45 million copies. It is a work of outstanding artistry, skill, and craftsmanship that is popular in its reach and experimental in its grasp. An engineering masterpiece, the album received a Grammy nomination for best engineered non-classical recording, based on beautifully captured instrumental tones and a warm, lush soundscape. Engineer Alan Parsons and Mixing Supervisor Chris Thomas, who had worked extensively with The Beatles (the LP was mastered by engineer Wally Traugott), introduced a level of sonic beauty and clarity to the album that propelled the music off of any sound system to become an all- encompassing, immersive experience. In his 1973 review, Lloyd Grossman wrote in “Rolling Stone” magazine that Pink Floyd’s members comprised “preeminent techno-rockers: four musicians with a command of electronic instruments who wield an arsenal of sound effects with authority and finesse.” The used their command to create a work that introduced several generations of listeners to art-rock and to elements of 1950s cool jazz. Some reharmonization of chords (as on “Breathe”) was inspired by Miles Davis, explained keyboardist Rick Wright.
