Fixing Juvie Justice

Baltimore’s juvenile detention centers are piling up young, wild, but far from free, children. Exiting more damaged and destructive than when they entered, these kids are often re-arrested. In an attempt to break this criminal cycle, a group of innovators imports justice principles from New Zealand’s Maori people. See if they can put a dent in the Charm City’s rising delinquency and, if so, if other cities can benefit.

Silk

Being a part of the Queen’s Counsel is hard work; earning the right to “take silk” means surmounting keen challenges in barristers’ personal and professional lives. For Martha (Maxine Peak), competing counsel Clive (Rupert Penry-Jones) adds a new wrinkle to her attempts to take silk. This inspiring, smart three-part British drama follows driven personalities fighting to prove their passion for law.

BEHIND THE SCREEN Meet UNC-TV’s Peter Ampuja

The first thing you notice about UNC-TV’s studio headquarters in Research Triangle Park is the beautiful natural surroundings. Maintaining and improving on this asset is the job of UNC-TV’s Landscape Supervisor Peter Ampuja and his small team.

Born in Canada and growing up just south of Boston, Peter dreamed of a UNC-TV Landscape Supervisor, Peter Ampuja hockey career, but his mother noticed his natural affinity for the outdoors. When Finnish relatives visited the Ampujas, Peter always led the tour of the family garden and talked about the local trees. After finishing school, Peter joined the Marines and discovered North Carolina by way of Camp Lejeune. Following his service, Peter returned to his love of nature, and started a landscaping business in South , where his parents had moved. Later, he worked as a groundskeeper at Palm Beach Community College by day, while taking evening classes in environmental horticulture there. After increasingly responsible positions utilizing his experience and love of nature, Peter took a position overseeing maintenance of University of Virginia’s historic gardens; when he learned about the opening at UNC-TV, he happily returned with his wife and children.

Today, Peter focuses not only on maintaining the lush 12-acre landscaping at UNC-TV, but also on doing so with an eye on sustainability and organic techniques. Recycling, composting and other sound environmental practices are all top priorities for Peter and his UNC-TV crew. They keep the grounds neat, safe and welcoming for people and wildlife alike. Thanks to their efforts, the prestigious Professional Grounds Management Society presented UNC-TV with its national Green Star Award in 2010 and 2012, joining such other North Carolina institutions as the Biltmore Estate, as well as UNC-Greensboro, Duke and Elon Universities.

Peter also supported UNC-TV’s educational mission by showing students from Durham’s Riverside High School how to plant and maintain an edible garden, sustainable organic horticulture and the advantages of healthy eating. On those rare occasions when he is not outdoors, Peter does find time to watch UNC-TV. His favorite programs? No surprises there— Almanac Gardener, In the Garden with Bryce Lane, and the rest of the Saturday morning gardening shows, of course!
