  • Bayfield Fruit Trials Are Intended to Provide Data on Other Commercially Viable Fruit Crops That Could Some Day Play in Important Role in the Bayfield Orchards
No. 9 Date: Dec, 2009 Jason Fischbach, UW-Extension Agriculture Agent [email protected] The climate and soils of the Bayfield area create a wonderful place to grow fruit, as locals and tourists have known for many years. In cooperation with Bayfield fruit growers, a series of fruit trials have been established to generate data on the performance of some fruit crops that are not yet being produced in the region; but may someday prove to be a wel- come addition to the orchards of the region. ◄ Photo 1. The unique soils, climate, and topography of the Bayfield fruit growing region makes it ideally suited for a range of fruit crops. Lake Superior moderates the climate, reducing the chances of killing spring frosts while ex- tending the growing season well into October. The sandy soils and high eleva- tions provide excellent water and cold air drainage, while the snows provide a blanket of insulation. The Bayfield Fruit Trials are intended to provide data on other commercially viable fruit crops that could some day play in important role in the Bayfield orchards. Bayfield Wine Grape Trial Unlike other agri-tourist areas, the Bay- field area does not have a vibrant grape Red Cultivars or grape-based wine industry, at least Alpenglow Mars not yet. The biggest challenges to pro- Baltica MN 1200 ducing high-quality wine grapes in our Castel 19637 Petite Jewel region are the low winter temperatures Frontenac Reliance and the relatively short and cool grow- Frontenac Gris Sabrevois ing season. The simple traitement de diverses maladies chroniques liées au vieillissement. Le stilbenoid monomer, -resveratrol, has received the most attention due to -resvératrol, monomère stilbénique, a suscité beaucoup d'intérêt de par E E early and biological activities in anti-aging assays. Since ses activités biologiques et . Une des principales sources in vitro in vivo in vitro in vivo , primarily in the form of wine, is a major dietary source of alimentaires en stilbénoïdes est , principalement sous forme Vitis vinifera Vitis vinifera these compounds, there is a tremendous amount of research on resveratrol de vin. De nombreux travaux de recherche ont été menés sur le resvératrol in wine and grapes. Relatively few biological studies have been performed dans le vin et le raisin. À ce jour, relativement peu d'études ont été réalisées on other stilbenoids from , primarily due to the lack of commercial sur les stilbènes du genre autre que le resvératrol, principalement en Vitis Vitis sources of many of these compounds.
